Memorial Messenger Memorial Presbyterian Church 601 24th Ave. S.W. Norman, OK 73069 (405) 329-3640 www.memorialpres.org April 2014 Latest News The Urban Mission item of the month for April is dried or canned beans. Please place your donations in the box by the church information table. We would like to thank the many volunteers who helped host the community Lenten worship and lunch on Wednesday, March 19. Many, many hands helped make it a success. Special thanks to Michael & Janann Yeager, Donna Vint, and Loreen Upton. In addition to a lovely ecumenical worship service and the fellowship of friends over lunch, we were blessed to raise over $265 for Food for Friends. Additionally, the receipts from the lunch exceeded expenses by nearly $280, and the excess will be used to help send kids to camps like Dwight Mission. We welcome the Central Oklahoma Polymer Clay Guild to Memorial for the third consecutive year. They will have use of the Fellowship Hall, kitchen, and Kids Club room for their annual retreat, April 10-12. Holy Week Events Palm Sunday worship, on April 13, includes the Proclamation of Christ s Entrance into Jerusalem; a fun, new Palm Sunday hymn from Mexico; and (of course!) the waving of palm branches. As the service unfolds, we will have the opportunity to reflect on Christ s Passion his trial and execution by which Jesus willing gave his life for our salvation. The Maundy Thursday service will be on April 17 at 7:00 P.M. Join us for a moving service of communion and reading of the passion gospel as we commemorate Christ s journey to the cross. As we celebrate Christ s resurrection the first fruits of those who have died, (1 Cor. 15:23) in whom we have hope for our own resurrection we will gather for an Easter potluck breakfast and Easter egg hunt during the Sunday School hour on April 20. The worship service on Easter is always a high point in the church year, and fittingly so, as we proclaim the good news that Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. Invite family, friends, neighbors and co-workers to this joyful celebration. The Fellowship & Hospitality committee will host the annual Easter potluck breakfast at 9:30 A.M. on April 20. Look for a sign-up sheet in the hallway, so that they will know how many serving tables to set up. Our scheduled spring clean-up day is Saturday, April 26, beginning at 8:00 A.M. Come, help us spruce up the church, inside and out, as we work to maintain this facility with which God has blessed us. 1

From the Pastor s Desk Dear Friends, I share with you this Easter gift from Jan Richardson, written in 2011. She is an artist, pastor, and author. You can find more of her work at PaintedPrayerBook.com. May you know the Easter blessing of our Risen Lord. Easter Blessing If you are looking for a blessing, do not linger here. Here is only emptiness, a hollow, a husk where a blessing used to be. This blessing was not content in its confinement. It could not abide its isolation, the unrelenting silence, the pressing stench of death. So if it is a blessing that you seek, open your own mouth. Fill your lungs with the air that this new morning brings and then release it with a cry. Hear how the blessing breaks forth in your own voice how your own lips form every word you never dreamed to say. See how the blessing circles back again wanting you to repeat it but louder how it draws you pulls you sends you to proclaim its only word: risen risen risen. 2

Clerk s Corner A regular meeting of session was held on Tuesday, March 18 at 7:00 P.M. Session approved two requests for use of our fellowship hall. Fellowship & Hospitality committee has lots of activities planned, so be sure and make note of those (found elsewhere in the newsletter). The confirmation class will meet with Session on Tuesday, April 22 and will be received publicly during worship on Sunday, May 4. Session approved the posting of session minutes on a bulletin board in the hallway. The next regular meeting of session will be held on Tuesday, April 22. Norman Ministerial Fellowship Lenten Service & Lunch March 19 Hey! Do you know what a spud is? I mean, besides a beer-lovin pit bull? Well, the kitchen crew for the March 19th Lenten Luncheon sure do! Spud Queen Donna Vint organized a cull/wash/slice/wrap/bake-athon that would have made Lucille Ball proud! A workforce of Memorial s Finest assembled in the kitchen and dining hall to prepare for our Wednesday guests. We scrubbed and laughed. We wrapped and made smart remarks. Then we scrubbed some more, laughed some more, and wrapped some more but went easy on the smart remarks. By the way, did you know that our ovens will hold at least 124 medium-sized potatoes and bake them successfully? Yes, they will. Whilst the spud squad tackled their tubers, the banquet group decked the hall with spring finery, transforming each table in our modest facility into a memorable lunching experience. Many positive comments followed our potato presentation, but best of all was the time we spent together! Thank you to all who participated! - Michael Yeager 5

(As Jesus neared Jerusalem) a very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting, Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven! - Matthew 21:8-9 (NRSV) 10
