PASTOR S MESSAGE 3 The story of the gospel of this Sunday leads us to ponder our attitude of Jesus in the request of the cananite woman. It seems at first that the Lord is ignoring her pleas, rejecting, humiliating her. In fact, the Lord uses this woman of canan as an example of faith and a revelation that He was sent first to the people of Israel and then, to the whole world. Jesus reject the woman s plea. He does not pay attention at all, such is also that the disciples asked Him to send her away, for she keeps calling out after them. The Lord listens to her but does not answer her. This reminds us of our prayer, we pray a lot but it seems that the Lord does not listen to it. Yes, He listens but He does not answer right away, He wants our prayer to be one of faith. When at last the Lord answers her, He seems to be a little rough with this poor woman, who was sad and full of suffering for her sick daughter, it is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs the woman could have felt herself, verbally abused or just humiliated in front of a crowd of Jewish people, but she keep going because she has faith that Jesus is the true Messiah, the son of David, by which all promised would be fulfilled. She recognizes that there is no other way for the healing of her daughter to keep insisting on the Lord. Sometimes we may feel unworthy to come to the Lord in prayer, thinking that He will reject us because of our sins, or bad habits we may be struggling with, however, we have to look at this woman and humble ourselves, recognizing ourselves nothing, like a little puppy and say: Please Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their master we have to worship Jesus, we have to pay homage to Him as she did. The best way in paying homage and adoration to Him and show our humility is in the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, at Holy Mass and in the sacrament of Reconciliation. The Lord does not reject her, He helps her to strengthen her faith and to be an example to the disciples and all those who were around him. It is not enough to ask for in prayer, we must come with humility and faith. And the Lord will give us what we need. Fr. Cornelius a Lapide gives us the characteristics of Christian prayer: Contemplate the ideal of perfect prayer, and imitate it. This woman of Canaan teaches us to pray. 1. With great humility, in that she acknowledges herself to be a dog. 2. With faith, because she calls Christ the son of David, i.e., the Messiah, the God and Saviour promised to the Jews. 3. With modesty because she sets before Christ the right of dogs and her own misery; yet does she not draw from thence the conclusion that Christ should heal her daughter, but leaves that to Him. 4. With prudence, in that she takes hold of Christ by His own words, and gently turns His reasoning against Himself, into an argument for obtaining her desire. 5. With reverence, with religion and devotion, because she made her supplication on her knees. 6. With resignation in that she did not say, Heal my daughter, but help me, in the manner which shall seem to Thee best. 7. With confidence, because although a Gentile, she had a firm hope that she would be heard by Christ. 8. With ardour. 9. With charity, in that she made intercession for her daughter, as if she were anxious for herself, saying, help me. 10. With constance and perseverance, in that she persisted when she was twice repulsed and became yet more earnest in prayer.
