KENDRIYA VIDYALAYA, GANDHIGRAM, DINIDGUL JANUARY(2017) Class: II A & B Subject: EVS Topic: Festivals & National Festivals Religious Festivals: Festivals are celebrations of special events. In India, we celebrate many festivals. They spread joy and happiness around us. Dussehra: Dussehra is a festival of the Hindus. It is also known as Vijay Dashmi. It starts with Ram Lila. Ram Lila staged for ten days. Dussehra marks the victory of good over evil. Diwali: Diwali is the festival of lights. We worship goddess Laxmi. We all exchange greetings and sweets. We light diyas and candles. Children enjoy fireworks and crackers.

Durga Puja: Durga Puja is a festivals of Bengalis. We worship Goddess Durga. Holi: Holi is the festival of colours. We play with gulal and coloured water. Gurupurab: Girupurab is celebrated as the birthday of Guru Nanak. It is the festival of the Sikhs. They go to Gurudwaras and pray. Langar - a community lunch is served there.

Onam: Onam is celebrated in Kerala. Boat races and feasts are arranged on this day. This festival is celebrated to welcome King Mahabali. Pongal: Pongal is the harvest festival of Tamil Nadu. It is celebrated in the month of January. They worship the Sun God, the Rain God, their domestic animals cows and bulls.

Christmas: Christmas is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Jesus Christ on 25 th December. Christians go to the churches to pray. Christmas trees are decorated with gifts. Eid: Eid is celebrated on the day after Ramzan. Muslim men go to mosque and pray. Sevaiyan are the special dish on this day. National Festivals National festivals are celebrated by all the people of the country.

Republic Day: Republic Day is celebrated on 26 th January. The president of India hoists the flag and parade is organized in Delhi at Rajpath in Delhi. Independence Day: Independence Day is celebrated on 15 th August. It is the day of our freedom from British rule. On this day our Prime Minister hoists the National Flag at Red Fort in Delhi. Gandhi Jayanti: October 2 is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti. It is the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi is remembered as the Father of the Nation. People put flowers on his Samadhi at Rajghat in Delhi.
