Edward and Lucy teaches, proclaims and lives the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. We do so through the celebration of the Eucharist, the administration of the sacraments and in loving and merciful service to all.

I hope you are able to help make this Sunday the greatest Chicken Dinner/Car Show ever! I was looking at the results of the dinner on August 24, 1958. There were 1673 dinners served. They report 16,000 raffle tickets printed and ready. (They even sold cigarettes and beer back then.!) They had 700 half-chickens, 20# livers and 20# gizzards!, 200 homemade pies and 65 bought, 175 loaves of bread, 15 gallons of cucumbers, 75 gallons of cold slaw. They advertised in the Garrettsville paper, Good News, Universe Bulletin, KYW radio and WERE.The great Cardinal Newman tells us: To grow is to change, and to be perfect is to have changed often. Parish life is constantly changing with families moving in and out, dying, etc. We adjust and try to bring life back as much as possible to normal. Our music program will certainly suffer with the departure of Jim O Reilly. Jim has brought us to a point where we can pray much better because of his talent and devotion to music at Mass. We are trying to reassemble our music program there to continue as best we can. Please be patient as we have to struggle to get up and running. It will certainly take time to get back to the music program we have enjoyed...you received the annual financial program two weeks ago. The diocese has studied it and sees us in a good position for the future. Many have observed that not hiring of a full-time Youth Minister has left us without a program for our youth. Our Finance Council did not see us clear to make a three-year commitment to a fulltime Youth Minister for over $60,000 per year. In budgeting for the coming year, they did make money available for a kind of Plan B. We will be asking interested parents to a special meeting after the 10:30am Mass on Sunday, September 16. Without parental involvement the best program will fail. Please make this meeting a priority. We are in conversation with Therese Zickert seeking her advice. Whatever form our Youth Ministry takes will be determined by our work this fall. There is money available, but not the $60,000 needed to replicate LifeTeen here... IT S A MATTER OF LIFE... If a child is killed when the mother who intends to carry the child to term is pregnant, it is considered homicide and the perpetrator is a criminal. If the child is murdered in the womb when the mother does not intend to keep it, the abortionist in question can use the most brutal means imaginable to destroy the baby and no one except us pro-lifers bats an eye. What could be more schizophrenic than deciding someone s worth (and life) solely on the basis of subjective opinion? CHURCH BREAK IN It is with great sadness that we inform you that St. Edward Church was broken into on August 11. There was damage to 2 offices and our safe was broken into. There were some checks waiting for deposit in the safe. If you turned in your Chicken Dinner raffle tickets or purchased dinner tickets August 4-8 with a check, you may want to put a stop payment on your check as these checks were a part of the money that was stolen. We are working with the Geauga County Sheriff Department. Please keep us in prayer....my flesh is true food, my blood is real drink When Jesus fed the crowd with a few fishes and bread, it was spectacular. But he told them and us that it was only a sign pointing to the main event that he would give his very self, his body and blood, the Bread of Life. They asked, How can he give us his flesh to eat, but Jesus insisted, My flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remain in me and I in them. This sounds like food for the body, but t is really sharing the life of the risen Christ transformed by the Spirit. When we receive Communion in faith, we participate in a heavenly reality and enter into union with the risen Christ. We understand the term sacrament to mean something material that symbolizes and brings about a spiritual reality. When we participate in a sacrament, we encounter the living Christ in person, renewing our lives. In our Mass, the Lord s Supper, in easting what looks like ordinary bread, we really receive the body of Christ. The risen Lord becomes for us the food of eternal life. Some of us are old enough to remember when not everyone at Mass came to Communion. They had come to see Communion as something extra. Over the centuries we had forgotten that the Eucharist is food and drink; it is a meal. Why come to a meal and not eat? Holy Communion is not a reward for being good; it is spiritual nourishment we need to live. This is why Jesus says, Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Welcome to your heavenly dinner! (James DiGiacomo, SJ)

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Sometimes the heat of summer translates into unrest in a city s streets. In the summer of 1834, popular sentiment against the presence of the Ursuline nuns near Boston reached a boiling point. An influx of Irish laborers had an impact on the work force in the city, and a deep-seated resentment against Catholics fueled the fire. The nuns supported themselves with a school, and most of the young women students were drawn from patrician Protestant families. Nevertheless, rumors fed by the saga of an unhappy junior sister and a later episode of a senior sister fleeing the place increased tensions. The city s selectmen were given a tour by the disgruntled sister, who by then had returned, and found all things in good order. That didn t please the mob, and the mother superior didn t help matters when she said that the bishop had platoons of Irishmen at hand, twenty thousand strong, to do marauders harm. By August 11, the convent had been invaded, ransacked, and burned to the ground. The nuns fled to Maine and Canada. The diocese attempted to recover losses, but the commonwealth offered only ten thousand dollars, which was rejected. Years later, a legislative bill for the state to rebuild the convent and school was roundly defeated. Yet the enterprise of Catholic education had great resilience, and in 1946, more than a hundred years after the riots, the Ursulines returned to Boston to reestablish an academy that endures to the present day. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. CHICKEN DINNER AND CAR SHOW WEEKEND The big day has arrived. We are hosting our 10th annual Chicken Dinner and Car Show from 11am-6pm. Help us make it a success with your presence and your support. We have lots of activities for all ages. Bring your family and friends and enjoy a delicious meal together. Wheelchair Drive Results The Wheelchair Collection on August 4 at St. Noel was a huge success! Joni and Friends' Wheels for the World collected 49 wheelchairs, 71 walkers, 21 sets of crutches, and 19 canes. Thanks to everyone who took the time to donate. Your efforts will allow many people the gift of mobility. We collect yearround! Please call Karen or Bruce Fraley at 440-946- 1605 or fraleyk@sbcglobal.net. THIS EUCHARISTIC FEAST Some things about human nature don t change, even over the course of centuries. When we celebrate a holiday, we have a meal; when we celebrate a significant event, we have a feast. In today s first reading, Lady Wisdom is setting a feast, a sign of celebrating the covenant that Israel has with God. Israel s central remembrance of its saving Exodus covenant is the Passover meal. So it is natural and not coincidental that the Christian celebration of the new covenant sealed by the blood of Christ on the cross happens at a meal, our Eucharist, offered first by Jesus in the context of Passover remembrance. It is easy for us, sometimes, to forget the very long and rich religious and human origins of our eucharistic feasting on the bread and cup that are the Body and Blood of Jesus. Today, and for the next few Sundays that we hear the Bread of Life discourse from John, let us bring to mind the loving covenant that God makes with us, and be filled with great joy at this marvelous feast that we have come to attend! Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Please keep Frank Klarich, father of parishioner, Marty Klarich in your prayers. Frank died last week and was buried. May he and all our faithful departed through the mercy of God, REST IN PEACE! ROSE HALL AND WINCA HALL RENTALS: CALL THE OFFICE 548-3812
