Welcome to St. Michael Church In a world polluted by noise, we should be able to expect the privilege of silence for meditation and preparation as we enter the space set aside for our public worship. In that spirit, we ask you for silence and offer the devotional aids below for your use as you await the start of the service and during the prelude. Prayers Before Worship Eternal God, we remember on this day how your Holy Spirit worked in the heart of impetuous Peter to express the classic confession of faith in your Son Jesus Christ. Continue the blessings of your Holy Spirit upon us so that at all times we will root our lives in Jesus as your Son and our Savior. Mighty God, your hands hold the power of life itself. You restore life in the face of death, bringing hope out of despair and promise out of destruction. Through the breath of your Spirit bring new life to us, that we may announce to the world the power of your presence made known in Jesus Christ our Savior. Worship Notes. Peter's confession, that Jesus is "the Messiah, the Son of the living God," is rock solid. Jesus is the stone rejected by the builders that has become the cornerstone. The psalmist celebrates God as "my rock in whom I put my trust." Paul refers to Christ as the "spiritual rock" that followed the children of Israel in the wilderness. Even the Greek petros, from which Peter's name comes, means stone. The assembly gathers again today to honor the Son of the living God and longs to be recognized as companions of Jesus. Persons with impairments - St. Michael offers to those with any type of hearing difficulty a small, remote personal speaker which provides the user an amplified, high quality audio of the entire service. We invite our guests who may have the need for such an accommodation to ask an usher for a personal speaker. (They are available upon entering the Nave.) We welcome any comments concerning St. Michael's efforts to accommodate persons with impairments or disabilities. An enlarged copy of the bulletin is available. Please see an usher if you would like to use one. WE ARE NO LONGER REUSING PORTIONS OF THE BULLETIN FROM WEEK TO WEEK. Therefore we are encouraging recycling. If for any reason you don t want to keep your bulletin, please drop it in the recycle box located in the narthex. LET'S ALL GATHER IN THE WINTER! - Make a commitment to walking twice a week with a fun group of people. We meet at the Information Desk in the Colonial Park Mall on Mondays and Wednesdays at 9:30 am to listen to a piece of scripture or a poem and then walk together for 30-45 minutes. Each Monday there are also free blood pressure screenings. Let's walk together! Email Jennifer Crist (cristfarm@gmail.com) with any questions. JANUARY'S MOVIE NIGHT, FRIDAY, 1/23 will allow you to choose your own film at the Midtown Cinema, 250 Reily St., Harrisburg. The cost of your ticket will be paid by the Kuhnert Fund; so when you get to the counter, tell them that you're with St. Michael. Please keep in mind that Friday evening films begin between 7 and 8:00 pm. (Friday's schedule should be out by Tuesday.) You'll need to research your film's start time and plan accordingly. Find upcoming film details at midtowncinema.com early this week or call the theater at 909-6566. After the film, please join us for movie discussions and dessert at Susan Will's house, 235 Verbeke St., just a block away! Psst! Cinema staff confirmed that Selma will be playing that evening, along with two other films. Do your research, select your film, and join us afterward at Sue's house! SOUPER BOWL OF CARING Mark your calendars now! On Sunday, February 1st the Souper Bowl of Caring will be held. This is a special year for the Souper Bowl. It marks the 25th anniversary for this ministry, started by a youth group in Texas, dedicated in the fight against hunger and poverty nation wide. To date this ministry has collected more than $100 million, all of which is given to charity. Following morning worship please plan to support this important ministry by staying for a delicious lunch of homemade soups, salad, bread, desserts and drinks. One hundred percent of the money collected will be donated to the Outreach Clinic at Christ Lutheran Church. What a better way to start your Sunday than with worship followed by fellowship and good food. THE EAKEN PIANO TRIO will perform in concert on Sunday, February 8 at 3 P.M. at First Lutheran Church, 21 S. Bedford Street, Carlisle. The performance will feature the music of Beethoven, Bach, Schumann, Boccherini, and Brahms. Sponsored by Fine Arts at First, the concert is free to all. A freewill offering will be received, and a reception will follow the concert. First Lutheran Church is handicapped accessible. COMMUNION HYMN In the Singing elw 466 SONG AFTER COMMUNION HYMN OF PRAISE PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Everlasting God, we bless you that you have brought us to the mountaintop and fed us with the life and light of your Son. Send us in his name from this place to bring light into dark corners, healing where lives are torn, and nourishment to every hungry heart, in the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. 4 13

LORD'S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. COMMUNION Communion is open to anyone who seeks to respond to Christ's love. To receive communion the assembly follows the choir, approaching the altar rail by the center aisle in two rows. Individuals fill in at the next open spot at the rail on their side of the aisle. You may kneel or stand. The pastor will come around and place the host (bread) in your hand, an assisting minister will have the wine. You may receive the wine either by common cup, or from the pouring chalice. To receive from the pouring chalice take a glass from the tray at the front of the center aisle. After you use the glass you may place it in the tray on the window sill as you return to your seat by the side aisle. COMMUNION SONG PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. Almighty God, you inspired Simon Peter to confess Jesus as the Messiah and Son of the living God. Keep your church firm on the rock of this faith, so that in unity and peace it may proclaim one truth and follow one Lord, your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 12 5

+++WORD+++ FIRST READING Acts 4:8 13 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, "Rulers of the people and elders, 9 if we are questioned today because of a good deed done to someone who was sick and are asked how this man has been healed, 10 let it be known to all of you, and to all the people of Israel, that this man is standing before you in good health by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead. 11 This Jesus is 'the stone that was rejected by you, the builders; it has become the cornerstone.' 12 There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among mortals by which we must be saved." 13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John and realized that they were uneducated and ordinary men, they were amazed and recognized them as companions of Jesus. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM Psalm 18:1 6, 16 19 The refrain is sung by the cantor, repeated by the assembly. The psalm is sung antiphonally by the cantor and assembly, beginning with the cantor. The assembly sings the refrain where marked. 1 I love you, O LORD my strength, O LORD my stronghold, my crag, and my haven; 2 my God, my rock in whom I put my trust, my shield, the horn of my salvation, and my refuge. R 3 I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised, and so shall I be saved from my enemies. 4 The breakers of death rolled over me, and the torrents of oblivion made me afraid. 5 The cords of Sheol en- tangled me, and the snares of death were set for me. 6 I called upon the LORD in my distress and cried out to my God for help. From the heavens the LORD heard my voice; my cry reached God's ears. R 6 THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE Holy One, the beginning and the end, the giver of life: Blessed are you for the birth of creation. Blessed are you in the darkness and in the light. Blessed are you for your promise to your people. Blessed are you in the prophets' hopes and dreams. Blessed are you for Mary's openness to your will. Blessed are you for your Son Jesus, the Word made flesh. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. With this bread and cup we remember your Word dwelling among us, full of grace and truth. We remember our new birth in his death and resurrection. We look with hope for his coming. Come, Lord Jesus. Holy God, we long for your Spirit. Come among us. Bless this meal. May your Word take flesh in us. Awaken your people. Fill us with your light. Bring the gift of peace on earth. Come, Holy Spirit. All praise and glory are yours, Holy One of Israel, Word of God incarnate, Power of the Most High, one God, now and forever. 11

DIALOGUE 16 You reached down from on high and grasped me; you drew me out of great waters. 17 You delivered me from my strong enemies and from those who hated me, for they were too might- y for me. 18 They confronted me in the day of my disaster; but you, LORD, were my support. 19 You brought me out into an open place; you rescued me because you delight- ed in me. R SECOND READING 1 Corinthians 10:1 5 PREFACE... we praise your name and join their unending hymn: I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, 2 and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3 and all ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ. 5 Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them, and they were struck down in the wilderness. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Alleluia is sung by all; the choir sings the proper verse, after which everyone repeats Alleluia. You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria,* and to the ends of the earth. 10 7

GOSPEL Matthew 16:13 19 The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. 13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?" 14 And they said, "Some say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." 15 He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" 16 Simon Peter answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God." 17 And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. GOSPEL PROCESSION Almighty God, Your Word Is Cast elw 516 SERMON HYMN OF THE DAY Built on a Rock elw 652 NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; 8 he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION PEACE Lord, in your mercy, / Hear our prayer. The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. The assembly shares the Lord s peace with those nearby. +++MEAL+++ CHOIR ANTHEM Follow Me arr. by John Carter OFFERING OFFERTORY HYMN We Place upon Your Table, Lord elw 467 OFFERING PRAYER Merciful God, as grains of wheat scattered upon the hills were gathered together to become one bread, so let your church be gathered together from the ends of the earth into your kingdom, for yours is the glory through Jesus Christ, now and forever. 9
