Order of Worship Welcome and greetings Jared Huffman, associate pastor * Call to worship taken from Psalm 95 and Proverbs 2 Leader: Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. All: In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. Leader: Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; All: For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. * Hymn of praise O Worship the King O worship the King all glorious above, O gratefully sing his pow r and his love; our shield and Defender, the Ancient of Days, pavilioned in splendor and girded with praise. Your bountiful care what tongue can recite? It breathes in the air; it shines in the light; it streams from the hills; it descends to the plain; and sweetly distils in the dew and the rain. Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail, in you do we trust, nor find you to fail; your mercies how tender, how firm to the end, our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend based on Psalm 104, words by Robert Grant, 1833 * Prayer of thanksgiving and petition Worship in the giving of God s tithe and our offerings

Offertory hymn Be Thou My Vision Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart; naught be all else to me, save that thou art thou my best thought by day or by night, waking or sleeping, thy presence my light. Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true word; I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord; thou my great Father, I thy true son; thou in me dwelling, and I with thee one. Riches I heed not, nor man s empty praise, thou mine inheritance, now and always: thou and thou only, first in my heart, High King of heaven, my treasure thou art. High King of heaven, my victory won, may I reach heaven s joys, O bright heaven s Sun! Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, still be my vision, O Ruler of all. Ancient Irish poem, ca. 8th cent. * Scripture reading from James 3:13-18 Jeff Compton (9:30) text printed in the bulletin Kate Tolson (11:00) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Prayer of preparation for the study of God s Word Sermon Identifying and Obtaining God s Wisdom Brian Salter, associate pastor Pastoral prayer Invitation to the Lord s Table Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church welcomes all baptized Christians, previously admitted to the table of the Lord by the elders of this or any Gospel proclaiming church to receive the Sacrament of the Lord s Supper. Come with joy as you actively trust in Christ and willingly forsake sin, having sought reconciliation in all relationships.

Corporate prayer of confession Leader: Heavenly Father, you instruct us in your Word to trust in the Lord with all our hearts, and lean not on our own understanding. You tell us not to be wise in our own eyes, but rather, to fear the Lord and shun evil. (Proverbs 3:5, 7) All: We confess that we are half-hearted in our trust and often lean more on our own understanding than yours. We act as though we are wiser than you and are prone to indulge in evil rather than shun it. Leader: You tell us in your word that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.... For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. (Proverbs 1:7; 2:6) All: We confess that rather than pursuing the gift of your pure wisdom, we are often content to settle for mere earthly wisdom. We do not fear you, but have become lukewarm and show contempt for your commands. Apart from your grace, we are fools who despise your mercy. Heavenly Father, heal our wayward and arrogant hearts, and grant us your wisdom. Silent prayers of confession Hymn of confession God, Be Merciful to Me God, be merciful to me, on thy grace I rest my plea; plenteous in compassion thou, blot out my transgressions now; wash me, make me pure within; cleanse, O cleanse me from my sin. I am evil, born in sin; thou desirest truth within. Thou alone my Savior art, teach thy wisdom to my heart; make me pure, thy grace bestow, wash me whiter than the snow. Gracious God, my heart renew, make my spirit right and true; cast me not away from thee, let thy Spirit dwell in me; thy salvation s joy impart; steadfast make my willing heart. Words: The Psalter, 1912 Assurance of God s pardoning grace John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

Words of institution Prayer of consecration Distribution of the elements Songs for meditation He Will Hold Me Fast When I fear my faith will fail, Christ will hold me fast; when the tempter would prevail, he will hold me fast. I could never keep my hold through life s fearful path; for my love is often cold; he must hold me fast. Refrain: He will hold me fast, he will hold me fast; for my Savior loves me so, he will hold me fast. Those he saves are his delight, Christ will hold me fast; precious in his holy sight, he will hold me fast. He ll not let my soul be lost; his promises shall last; bought by him at such a cost, he will hold me fast. Refrain For my life he bled and died, Christ will hold me fast; justice has been satisfied; he will hold me fast. Raised with him to endless life, he will hold me fast till our faith is turned to sight, when he comes at last! Refrain words by Ada Ruth Habershon (1906); music by Matthew Merker 2013 Matthew Merker Music, ARP, UBP CCLI Lic. #152036 My Heart Is Filled with Thankfulness My heart is filled with thankfulness to him who bore my pain; who plumbed the depths of my disgrace and gave me life again; who crushed my curse of sinfulness and clothed me in his light and wrote his law of righteousness with pow r upon my heart. My heart is filled with thankfulness to him who walks beside; who floods my weaknesses with strength and causes fears to fly; whose ev ry promise is enough for ev ry step I take, sustaining me with arms of love and crowning me with grace. My heart is filled with thankfulness to him who reigns above, whose wisdom is my perfect peace, whose ev ry thought is love. For ev ry day I have on earth is given by the King; so I will give my life, my all, to love and follow him. words and music Keith Getty and Stuart Townend 2003 Thankyou Music, ARR, UBP, CCLI Lic.# 152036

Prayer of thanksgiving * Hymn of praise I Will Glory in My Redeemer * Benediction * Doxology * Postlude I will glory in my Redeemer, whose priceless blood has ransomed me. Mine was the sin that drove the bitter nails, and hung him on that judgment tree. I will glory in my Redeemer, who crushed the power of sin and death. My only Savior before the holy Judge: the Lamb who is my righteousness; the Lamb who is my righteousness. I will glory in my Redeemer, my life he bought, my love he owns. I have no longings for another, I m satisfied in him alone. I will glory in my Redeemer; his faithfulness my standing place. Though foes are mighty and rush upon me, my feet are firm, held by his grace; my feet are firm, held by his grace. I will glory in my Redeemer, who carries me on eagles wings. He crowns my life with loving kindness; his triumph song I ll ever sing. I will glory in my Redeemer, who waits for me at gates of gold, and when he calls me it will be paradise, his face forever to behold; his face forever to behold. Words and music by Steve and Vikki Cook 2001 Sovereign Grace Worship ARR, ICS, UBP, CCLI Lic.#152036 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. James 3:13-18 13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. 15 Such wisdom does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. 16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. 17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. 18 Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.

SERMON NOTES Identifying and Obtaining God s Wisdom James 3:13-18 1. The contrast between earthly wisdom and God s wisdom: character (vv. 13-15) conduct (vv. 16-17) community (vv. 16, 18) 2. The course to obtain God s wisdom: birth (1 Cor. 1:30) bow (Prov. 1:7) Bible (Col. 3:16) beg (James 1:5) Big Idea: If we are going to flourish according to God s design, we must know what true wisdom is and how to obtain it.

MARKETPLACE THANK YOU Thank you so much for giving your time and efforts to Marketplace 2017. Marketplace is always an amazing opportunity to see people bring their individual gifts and talents before the Lord in a program that calls for so many people to work together it is such a gift to me. I was so blessed and encouraged all week long to see the body of Christ working together. From the many people who helped with behind the scenes projects before the Marketplace week as well as the many people who were here each day during Marketplace we had at least 206 adults and 57 middle schoolers involved serving 228 elementary and 29 pre-k children, as well as a nursery staff of 12 who served 43 little ones! To each and every person involved, please be assured that your contribution was appreciated.
