Please remember them in your prayers. Some of you may have missed our announcement last weekend of the new Pastor for St. Philip starting July 1 st. Bishop Ricken has named Fr. José to this position. At every mass I announced this news it was met with applause and appreciation. I would echo this response. This means that effective July 1 st, I will end my pastoral obligations at St. Philip and Fr. José will end his at St. Bernard. Fr. José and I will continue to collaborate and work closely together helping each other out and continuing our friendship. As we move into a modest time of transition please be patient with any oversights or miscommunications that are apt to happen in events like this. Thank you for your understanding. We are excited for Fr. José and promise our prayers for him in this new role. It has been some time since we have had a Vacation Bible School at the parishes. We are blessed that St. Bernard will be hosting a Vacation Bible School July 29-August 2. This is a week long program. My experience with VBS has been very positive. These can be a fun and engaging way for smaller children to enjoy and encounter with God and the Church. Join us! I anticipate also being present for a portion of it. This year s theme for Vacation Bible School is Mary leads me closer to Jesus complete with a Kingdom Party! How s that for a great theme we could all learn from! It is for ages 4-11, and will take place at St. Bernard School. The time runs from 9:00am-Noon. There is a cost of 30$/child and includes a T-shirt. There is a 5$ discount for each child in a family, (second is 25, third is 20). There is an early bird registration by June 6 th, which includes a 5$ discount. Part of this program has been funded by a grant from the Diocese of Green Bay, and we are very grateful for that! You may contact Kathy Gibson if you have further questions at 360-2113. There is more information available on the parish website, www.stbernardgb.org and specific information about the theme at www.catchat.ca. Fr. May 11 & 12, 2013 PAGE 3 St. Philip Parish News $CRIP: The $crip program at St. Philip is looking for a volunteer to order and organize inventory of the $crip cards. Training will be provided. This person needs to be available to work in the Parish Office Wednesday/Thursday afternoons and Monday mornings. Profit from our $crip sales is put toward the parish operating budget. If you enjoy bookwork and are willing to donate some of your time to continue the advancement of our $crip program, please call Lynn in the Parish Office (468-7848). Don t forget to buy $crip for Mother s Day! Scrip is available after all weekend Masses and in the Parish Office! ATTN: ALL VOLUNTEERS! Spring is here and that means summer is just around the corner finally! That also means family vacations. Those that are involved in regular ministries, especially ministries for weekend liturgies, please remember to call a replacement if you will be away from your commitment. One phone call is all it takes to cover your ministry role so you can enjoy your well-deserved time away with your family! PARISH RUMMAGE SALE: The St. Philip Parish Altar Society s Rummage Sale is coming up in mid-june! For those of you that have attended in years past, it is well-known that items are reasonably priced and of very good quality. If you have things to donate to the rummage sale, we ask that you are conscious of cleaning them up and hold onto them at your house until dropoff times can be determined. Watch the bulletin for more information next week! Recruitment Weekend May 18-19 Both St. Bernard and St. Philip Parishes are seeking parishioners to serve in leadership roles, as a Trustee -Treasure or on either the Pastoral or Finance Council. A Parish s Trustee-Treasurer serves, along with the Treasurer-Secretary, as an officer of the parish for a two-year term. Pastoral and Finance Council members serve three-year terms. Both are eligible to serve more than one term. Both parishes will be holding recruitment weekends at all Masses on the weekend of May 18-19. Please consider serving your parish in one of these important roles. If not you, then who? NEW COMMUNITY SHELTER MEAL: We are in need of assistance in filling the sign-up sheets for the NEW Community Shelter meal. The sheets are located in the back of church. Anyone that is willing to donate food for the spaghetti meal is encouraged to sign up before Thursday of this week. Next Sunday s meal will be coordinated by the Tremblay family - thanks, Karen and Bob! MESSENGER CONTEST WINNER: Congratulations to Lois Borchers, the winner of the $25 Scrip card. Lois correctly identified the ceiling chandeliers inside St. Philip Church as the mystery photo. Your next chance to win will be Advent 2013. I NEED A RIDE! We have one parishioner that is in need of a ride to the 9:30 Mass on the first and third weekends of the month. If you are in the Bellevue area and are willing to help her out, please call Lynn in the Parish Office, 468-7848. SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER PAGE 4 St. Bernard Parish News St. Bernard School Kay Franz-School Principal The Sussification of Romeo and Juliet St. Bernard School has partnered with the J. R. Kroc Center to produce a theatrical production of The Sussification of Romeo and Juliet. The play involves about 40 students in grades 5,6, & 7 as actors, actresses and stage crews. There will be an evening performance at the J.R. Kroc Center at 6:30 on May 23, 2013. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend. To Seussify or not to Suessify Shakespeare s works, it seems, did not bother the playwright Peter Bloedel. He wrote a most wonderful play The Sussification Of Romeo And Juliet, in which he turns Shakespeare s tragedy Romeo And Juliet into a comedy, using the famous children s writer Dr. Seuss s style of poetry. The interaction between the Capitulates and Monotones originally Capulets and Montagues is characterized by some insane moments of hilarity. The story of Romeo and Juliet ended on a happy note, unlike in the original play. The only tragic aspects are that Romeo keeps being disappointed in love while clumsy Juliet trips and falls frequently. MISSING Yellow Print, Cloth Bag containing a Pyx (a holder to bring Holy Communion to the Homebound). It was set on the table just outside of the Sacristy. It has sentimental value and the owner would really like it back. If found please return it to the ushers room and place it in the cabinet on the left hand wall. Thank You! Congratulations To The Raffle Winners! April 28 Pat Roy April 29 Corinne DiLeonardo April 30 Tina Chitwood May 1 Harold Becks May 2 Tom Delwiche May 3 Steve Konkel May 4 Brandy Younger Winners will be notified by mail! Health Ministry Ann Kaufmann, Parish Nurse SMOKING AND COPD Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a serious lung disease that gradually makes it harder and harder to breathe. COPD includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. How severe your symptoms are depends on the extent of lung damage. If you keep smoking, the damage will get worse faster than if you stop smoking. Among 15 million US adults with COPD, 39% continue to smoke. How is smoking related to COPD? COPD, the number 3 killer in the nation, is almost always caused by smoking. Smoking accounts for as many as 9 out of 10 COPD-related deaths. COPD most often occurs in people age 40 and older with a history of smoking (either current or former smokers). However, as many as 1 out of 6 people with COPD never smoked. Smoking during childhood and teenage years can slow how lungs grow and develop. This can increase the risk of developing COPD in adulthood. How can COPD be prevented? The best way to prevent COPD is to never start smoking and if you smoke, quit. Talk with your health care provider about programs and products that can help you quit. Also, stay away from secondhand smoke, which is smoke in the air from other people smoking. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention www.cdc.gov/tips, www.smokefree.gov GRACE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE There are special GRACE financial grants still available for kindergarten & first grade classes for families who qualify. Kindergarten classes average 10-18 children; First grade classes average 16-20 students. For more information, contact GRACE School or go to www.gracesystem.org. Happy Mother s Day
