SETTING: William Mathias The musical setting is available on a separate sheet. PRELUDE: Sarabande (French Suite V in G) J.S. Bach (1685-1750) INTROIT HYMN: TiS 525 You we praise, high priest and victim You we praise, high priest and victim, of our hearts the shepherd-king; living dying, raising, saving: now let alleluias ring. Here we see the mystery telling of your wondrous love for all; here in prayer and sacred symbol we your boundless love recall. Here in adoration bending we receive the grace you give, join the angels song unending, feed by faith on you, and live. Praise to you, eternal Saviour, praises from the earth ascend; praises from the saints in heaven, alleluias without end. Fr Gary welcomes the people. SENTENCE: Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word. Luke 1.38 Fr Gary: The Lord be with you. And also with you. Fr Gary: Christ is risen. Alleluia! He is risen indeed. Alleluia! Let us pray: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. Confession: (Please sit) (Silence) LA: Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident that God will raise us up. O God you have searched us out and known us And all that we are is open to you. We confess that we have sinned; and used our power to dominate And our weakness to manipulate; Page 2 of 12
We have evaded responsibility and failed to confront evil; We have denied dignity to ourselves and each other. And fallen into despair. We claim your love; we choose to be made whole. Kyrie: Sung - Lord, have mercy; (x3) Christ, have mercy; (x3) Lord, have mercy; (x3) The Absolution: Fr Gary: Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. We stand to sing the Gloria. Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. COLLECT: We beseech you, O Lord, pour your grace into our hearts, that as we have known the incarnation of your Son Jesus Christ by the message of an angel, so by his cross and passion we may be brought to the glory of his resurrection; who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Please be seated for the readings. FIRST READING: Isaiah 7.10-14 Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, saying, ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven. But Ahaz said, I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test. Then Isaiah said: Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary mortals, that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young Page 3 of 12
woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel Hear the word of the Lord, thanks be to God. PSALM: 40: 6-13 O Lord my God, great are the wonderful things which you have done, and your thoughts which are towards us: there is none to be compared with you; 7 Were I to declare them and speak of them: they are more than I am able to express. 8 Sacrifice and offering you do not desire: but my ears you have marked for obedience; 9 Burnt-offering and sin-offering you have not required: then said I, Lo, I come. 10 In the scroll of the book it is written of me, that I should do your will: O my God, I long to do it, your law delights my heart. 11 I have declared your righteousness in the great congregation: I have not restrained my lips, O Lord, and that you know. 12 I have not hidden your righteousness in my heart: I have spoken of your faithfulness and of your salvation. 13 I have not kept back your loving-kindness and your truth: from the great congregation. Chant: Gerald Knight SECOND READING: Hebrews 10.4-10 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body you have prepared for me; in burnt-offerings and sin-offerings you have taken no pleasure. Then I said, See, God, I have come to do your will, O God (in the scroll of the book it is written of me). When he said above, You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt-offerings and sin-offerings (these are offered according to the law), then he added, See, I have come to do your will. He abolishes the first in order to establish the second. And it is by God s will that we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Hear the word of the Lord Thanks be to God. Page 4 of 12
GRADUAL HYMN: TiS 302 The angel Gabriel from heaven came The angel Gabriel from heaven came, his wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame; All hail, said he, thou lowly maiden Mary, most highly favoured lady, Gloria! for known a blessed Mother thou shalt be, all generations laud and honour thee, thy Son shall be Immanuel, by seers foretold; most highly favoured lady. Gloria! Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head, To me ne as it pleaseth God, she said, my soul shall laud and magnify his holy name : most highly favoured lady, Gloria! of her, Immanuel, the Christ was born in Bethlehem, all on a Christmas morn, and Christian folk throughout the world will ever say most highly favoured lady. Gloria! GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: Choir: Choir: Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ King of endless glory. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ King of endless glory. The word became flesh and dwelt among us: And we saw his glory. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ King of endless glory. The GOSPEL of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke 1.26-38 Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, Greetings, favoured one! The Lord is with you. But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob for ever, Page 5 of 12
and of his kingdom there will be no end. Mary said to the angel, How can this be, since I am a virgin? The angel said to her, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. For nothing will be impossible with God. Then Mary said, Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word. Then the angel departed from her. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Please sit for the Sermon. Canon Jim Mcpherson Silence and then: Let us stand and together affirm the faith of the Church: We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Priest: Let us pray for the world and for the Church. Page 6 of 12

By your Holy Spirit enable us to grow: in faith, in service, in generous giving; and add to your Church new disciples so that your saving, reconciling, recreating work may go forward, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. And then the Lord s Prayer: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. The prayer of Approach: We do not presume to come to your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen. Please stand for the Greeting of Peace. Fr Gary: We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us. Page 7 of 12
Fr Gary: The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. We share a greeting with other members of the congregation. OFFERTORY HYMN: TiS 161 Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord! Unnumbered blessings, give my spirit voice; tender to me the promise of his word: in God my Saviour shall my heart rejoice. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his name! Make known his might, the deeds his arm has done; his mercy sure, from age to age the same; his holy name - the Lord, the Mighty One. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his might! Powers and dominions lay their glory by. Proud hearts and stubborn wills are put to flight, the hungry fed, the humble lifted high. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his word! Firm is his promise, and his mercy sure. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord to children s children and for evermore! During the singing of this hymn the altar is prepared and a collection is taken up. A prayer is offered over the gift, then: Fr Gary: Fr Gary: Lift up your hearts We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. All glory and honour be yours always and everywhere, mighty Creator, everliving God. We give you thanks and praise for your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, who by the power of your Spirit was born of Mary and lived as one of us. By his death on the cross, he offered the one true sacrifice for sin, and obtained an eternal deliverance for his people. Page 8 of 12
And now we give you thanks for the obedience of your servant Mary, Who by your grace answered your call To be the mother of your Son. With all generations we call her blessed, And with her we rejoice in the greatness of your salvation. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Merciful God, we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and wine, and we pray that by your Word and Holy Spirit, we who eat and drink them may be partakers of Christ s body and blood. On the night he was betrayed Jesus took bread; and when he had given you thanks he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat. This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. After supper, he took the cup, and again giving you thanks he gave it to his disciples, saying, Drink from this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded: proclaiming his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again, we celebrate, with this bread and this cup, his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. Renew us by your Holy Spirit, unite us in the body of your Son, and bring us with all your people into the joy of your eternal kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom, and in whom, Page 9 of 12
in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father, in songs of never-ending praise: Blessing and honour and glory and power are yours for ever and ever. Amen. We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. We sing: Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us. Jesus, bearer of our sins, have mercy on us. Jesus, redeemer of the world, grant us your peace. The Invitation: Come receive the gifts of God for the people of God.
