SEPTEMBER 4, 2016 PASTOR S COMMENTS. What is the cost of discipleship? We tend to ask, How much do I need to do to be saved? We would like to have a finite or tangible figure to work toward for assurance. Jesus in today s Gospel passage from Luke is telling us that the commitment of discipleship is absolute and total. He says: If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Jesus of course is not saying that we should hate our family members but rather that we should not prefer them over Jesus himself. That is a radical statement about the commitment that Jesus is asking of us. He further states: Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. To be a disciple means to follow Jesus; and the nature of that following is not to be guarded or limited but rather to be total and the center of are words and actions. We are being called to take a closer look at how committed we are to living in relationship to Jesus and his values and way of life. If we are really in love with Jesus and desire to know and love him totally than that commitment does not alienate us from family, but rather gives direction and purpose to all of our other relationships. All our relationships take on a supernatural dimension in that we are striving to love and serve Jesus in all people and desire as a true disciple to assist in the mission of Jesus to bring them to the face to face experience of our God for all eternity. Jesus never said that discipleship would be easy but he did say that he will be with us all days until the end of the world. We trust in him to guide and sustain our journey. Monday is Labor Day, so the holiday Mass for giving thanks for the gift of labor and for praying for the unemployed and underemployed will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. in the Parish House Chapel. We congratulate them and pray that they may grow in faith and love as they live out this Sacrament. RESULTS OF SECOND COLLECTION LAST WEEKEND The results of last weekend s Second Collection in support of Catholic Communications and Catholic University of America was contributions totaling $397.00. Thank you for your generosity SPECIAL COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND Next weekend there will be a Second Collection called the Bishop s Education Fund. This fund is used by Bishop Zubik to assist students to attend Catholic Schools. There is no envelope in your packets for this collection. Today we celebrate as a Church the canonization of Mother Teresa of Calcutta as a saint and intercessor. Not too many years ago Time Magazine had her on the cover proclaiming her as a living saint. There is something special in celebrating a saint who lived in our time and gave us an example and a witness to the reality that discipleship can be lived and can be an inspiration in our day.

This feedback will be compiled in every parish across the Diocese of Pittsburgh to aid in the planning process. So please plan to attend and get involved. Learn more at www.onmissionchurchalive.org. PRAYER FOR ON MISSION FOR THE CHURCH ALIVE Father of Mercy, as we journey On Mission for The Church Alive!, endow us with your gifts of collaboration, courage and compassion. Help us to fulfill the mission of Jesus and His Church through vibrant parishes and effective ministries. Raise up selfless, energetic leaders to serve the Church in fidelity and with care. May we, the Church of Pittsburgh in Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Greene, Lawrence and Washington Counties, be sustained and strengthened by your grace. Help us to learn Jesus, to love Jesus and to live Jesus.Hear this prayer and grant it through Jesus Christ our Lord, with the help of our dear Blessed Mother, under the mantle of her love, Amen. CAMPAIGN UPDATE As an update for the five year pledge Campaign for the Church Alive in the Diocese, the amount pledged from our parishioners was $589,631.00 and after a little more than 2 years into the 5 year pledge $280,666.14 has been collected. That means that 48% of the pledged monies have been collected. As you know, with that money we have been able to air condition our church, so thank you to all those who have contributed toward the Campaign. AUTOMATIC OFFERTORY PAYMENT A number of parishioners have inquired about setting up a monthly online payment of their Offertory Contribution. Several parishioners already use that option and it can be easily set up through your own bank. If you go to your bank and tell them that you would like to include Our Lady of the Angels Parish in your Online Bill Paying, your bank can set that up so that a check will be sent each month to the Parish with the amount that you would like to donate. This simplifies your contributing in that you will not have to remember to find your envelope and write a check each week and it will be taken care of automatically by your bank and sent directly to the Parish. If you would like further information about this option for giving, please contact your own bank or you can call the Parish Office..
