Western North Carolina Conference Lay Organization LAY EXPRESS Volume III January 2017 Issue 1 CHRISTMAS PARTY WITH BISHOP & SUPERVISOR DAVIS The Lay Organization was well represented. As the season of Christmas blankets across the world, joy, peace, and good will welcomed everyone to the Bishop s Christmas Celebration at Saint Paul AME Church in Raleigh, Pastor Rev. Gregory Edmond. It was the week before Christmas around the noon hour, where Laity, Presiding Elders, Pastors, Officers, and Friends gathered to bring Christmas cheer to our new presiding Prelate of the Second Episcopal District, Bishop James Levert Davis and Supervisor Arelis B. Davis. The tables were set in sparkling colors that filled the room with visions of sugar plums dancing in your head. The carols were sung by the Edenton Street Singers whose voices harmonized in, Jesus, Jesus, Oh what a wonderful child.glory, Glory, Glory to the new born King. The Family enjoyed good food, music, fellowship, and gifts of love as presentations were made to the Presiding Elders and the Episcopal family. Santa s helpers, (Rev. Kim Moss, Mrs. Mary Edmund, and Mrs. Shirley Shears) distributed Christmas ornaments from Bishop and Supervisor Davis. Remember JESUS is the REASON for the season. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Macedonia A.M.E. Church ~Honoring the Past Building the Future~ The Macedonia A.M.E. Church was founded on May18, 1884 by Mr. Alfred Royal. The initial church was located near Highway # 57. From the first revival, thirty members were added. However, Bro. Royal could not baptize the members because he had not obtained his license. The church membership continued to grow until the idea was conceived to build a larger church. Rev. J.W. Dalton was the pastor at that time. Although the members were not prosperous, they had a mind to work together. The church was built in 1914 in its current location, 4164 Yarborough s Mill Road, Milton, NC, by a contractor named Venshaw from Halifax, Virginia. The second church served its members well from June 19, 1914 through December 1970. During that time the church experienced growth under the leadership of our pastors: Rev. J.C. Wright, Rev. I. Gray, Rev. Macken, Rev. Grady, Rev. Crumton, Rev. Hargess, Rev. Smith, Rev. Wallace, Rev. C. A. Holt, Rev. Delouche, and Rev. Treadwell. We continued to grow during the fifties and sixties under our pastors, who were Rev. Dilworth, Rev. Pickett, Rev. T. L. Coble and Rev. C. W. Parker. Because of our continued growth, in 1966 some were saying let s remodel, but God inspired Mrs. Kate Hope to say let s build. It was through God s grace and prayers that she was able to be strong and continued to work. She roamed the state sides looking for a church by which to pattern and was finally asked by her brother, Clarence Jeffreys to go to Danville, Virginia to see the Fairview Methodist Church. After several meetings and discussions under the leadership of Pastor J.H. Torian, the members were ready to venture into the building of a more modern church. On Sunday, December 12, 1970, songs and praises were given for the last time in the old church. The members marched from the old church to the new and we had our first service in this building. The real history of the church is not just one of the buildings, but more specifically, a place to worship God. The true church lies in the hearts of men and women. Our dream was of a modern church to accommodate members and visitors in our worship experience. We continued to expand and grow under the leadership of several pastors: Rev. J. Paulding, Rev W. Christopher, Rev. C. Lambert, Rev. L. Miller, Rev. R. P. Lynch and Rev. J. W. Gwynn. In 1989, Rev. Clyde Long, Sr., became our pastor. Under his leadership we renovated parts of our church, paved the parking lot, install new stained glass windows and carpet, purchased chairs, put padding on pews, replaced the church roof and purchased a church van. Rev. Gladys Garland was called by God into the ministry and became the associate minister here. We also experience a tremendous spiritual growth, expanded our membership roll and added more outreach programs. Rev. Long was the pastor of Macedonia A.M.E. Church for 18 years until his retirement in May 2008. Our current pastor is Rev. Kelvin Royster along with First Lady Barbara Royster. Under Pastor Royster s leadership, he brings A Pathway of Love and Unity. Starting in 2009 he dedicated the second Sunday in each month to the youth to carry out the worship service. Pastor Royster continues to work diligently with all auxiliaries in the church. Under him, we renovated parts of our church, improved our physical facilities, replaced our heating and air condition unit, and purchased a new church bulletin. On October 27th, 2013, Pastor Royster conducted the ground breaking ceremony for the building of our new Fellowship Hall. Almost a year later on October 19, 2014, we were blessed by God to have the Dedication Ceremony for the new Fellowship Hall for the Macedonia Church Family! We are blessed to have him as our Shepherd. We thank God for His blessings throughout the years and pray that He continues to allow us to prosper and grow in His love and grace.
