Hamfests need your support and attendance to survive! www.mocars.org www.facebook.com/nc4ml The President s Corner Many of you will probably remember Dave Sapko, W3GOE who left this area several years ago and moved to Illinois. While he lived here Dave was an active member of MOCARS and a VE. He called several nights ago to tell me that he will be visiting the area late this month. Although he plans to arrive on or about February 20 th (our meeting night) he unfortunately doesn t expect to arrive in time to attend the meeting. However, he did invite me for lunch and told me that he hopes to see other MOCARS members during his visit. A major item for discussion at the February meeting will be the invitation we have received to assist the organizers of a 100 mile run this coming fall in Uwharrie. They expect this run to be limited to fewer than 200 participants and they will have only three aid stations. Food will be available to runners and to hams that participate and they will present any hams that assist with a race shirt. The course for this race will be a twenty mile circuit and participants will be required to run the course five times. The negatives for us include the fact that at least some of the aid stations will be difficult to drive to, and that the race is scheduled for 36 hours. We will need to let the organizers know whether we can help as soon as possible. We will also be discussing the Winter Field Day and the Uwharrie Mountain Run at the February meeting. I am certain there will be pictures, comments and suggestions about these two events. On a more personal issue, I will be resuming my graduate study in May at UNCG. Continue on page 5

Presentation on Antennas: J Hammond (N4BRD) led a short discussion on antennas focusing on the needs for the Uwharrie Mountain Run. Old Business: Winter Field Day- J Hammond (N4BRD) briefed members on the plans for the field day which will begin at 1700 UTC (Noon EST) on Saturday, January 25, 2014 and run to 1700 UTC (Noon EST) on Sunday, January 26, 2014. As in previous years, MOCARS will be working with Mars (Montgomery County) and Stanley County ARC. Calendar 2014 - Charles Wackerman (W3CY) asked members to submit any events that should be on the clubs calendar to him by e-mail. New Business: ARES- Lionel Bryson (N4YYL) provided members with a review of the successful SET (Simulated Emergency Training) that was conducted on Sunday, December 8, 2013. The SET tested the emergency repeater, tested the facilities at the new Emergency Operations Center. Lionel reports that the tests were successful and despite less than optimal placement of the antenna at the EOC communication from their seemed to be good on the 2 meter band. Lionel reported that the county is working to setup High Frequency Communication by remote control but this maybe a few months in being available. In the meantime and due to possible failure of the link between the EOC and the HF radio Lionel indicated that our emergency plan will call for a Ham to operate from their home and pass information from the HF net to the EOC on 2 meters. Treasurer s Year End Report 2013- Charles (W3CY) asked reviewed the treasures year-end report a copy of which is attached and was provided to the officer on January 6. After brief discussion, it was decided that the financial position of the club was in the best possible for a non-profit and the current needs of the organization. No motion was made to adjust the dues for the 2014 Year having been set at the November 2013 meeting to $20 per person and $25 per family. Pinehurst Gazette- Kevin Stewart provided copies of the Pinehurst Gazette provided copies of the Pinehurst Gazette that covered the Field Day in June. It was generally agreed that the secretary should draft a letter for the President to send to the publisher thanking her for the in-depth coverage. Repeater Call Sign- Ernie Bryant (KR4W) made a presentation that the repeater vanity call sign is due to for renewal. Ernie has had Charles (W3CY) counter sign the renewal application and will take care of making payment for the fee to ARRL. He will bring the final cost for reimbursement at the February meeting. Estimates have the cost at $ 23.00. Richmond County Amateur Radio Club- Charles (W3CY) introduced John Eichorn (WP1D) President of the Richmond County Amateur Radio Club. John discussed the availability of W4VEC testing in Hamlet and their upcoming Special Event Station (N4C) that will operate on May 10 (National Train Day) at the Hamlet Train Station. Thankfully, the majority of the courses will be web based but I do expect they will take a lot of my time. I started this process almost 25 years ago and because of the time that has elapsed I will have to retrace some of my steps but I am hoping to complete most of it within three to five years. My fear is that it will be too demanding or that it will force me to cut back on some of my other commitments. Of course this is something that only time will tell. See you at the meeting! 73, Charles Wackerman
