Birthday of the Renewed Moravian Church August 13, 1727 is the date observed as the birthday of the Renewed Moravian Church. Moravian refugees had gathered on the estate of Count Zinzendorf in Saxony as early as 1722 and soon established the community of Herrnhut. But by 1727 all was not well in Herrnhut. The community was divided by personal differences, doctrinal disputes and the absence of a shared vision of what God wanted them to be and do. Count Zinzendorf devoted himself to a search for harmony among the Moravians and personally visited their homes for Bible study and prayer. In May, 1727, Count Zinzendorf presented the community with a set of standards of behavior The Brotherly Agreement (known today as The Covenant for Christian Living) which he believed should be a code of Christian conduct for every member of the community. All who wished to remain in the community were asked to sign the agreement and covenant with each other to abide by its standards. On August 13, 1727, the Moravians gathered for a service of Holy Communion in the Lutheran Church. What transpired at that service has been called the Moravian Pentecost, as brothers and sisters in Christ who had been at odds with each other realized a spirit of unity and purpose which had eluded them to that point. They were so moved by the service that they didn t want to return to their homes; rather, they wanted to continue the wonderful fellowship of the experience. Count Zinzendorf enabled them to continue their fellowship by ordering food from his manor house and distributing it among the brothers and sisters. Today we understand this event to be the beginning of the lovefeast in the Moravian tradition. On Sunday, August 10, we will observe the birthday of the Renewed Moravian Church as we gather at Mizpah to celebrate Holy Communion at the 11:00 a.m. worship service. Let us pray that the Spirit of Christ will be with us in a powerful way to bring renewed unity and common purpose. Grace and peace to all, Wayne Burkette, Interim Pastor Page 2
