THE TOWER October 22, 2017 T -N S I O T WHAT BELONGS TO CAESAR? WHAT BELONGS TO GOD?

HEART TO HEART pastor to parish Grateful The Cardinal s Mass which marked Founder s Day last weekend our 120 th anniversary of the founding of Sacred Heart parish was beau ful. It was great to see the church filled to overflowing. It was wonderful to hear such fantas c music provided by our adult choir, cantors, instrumentalists, and children s choir with the assembly joining in fullthroated praise of God. Thank you to our lectors, Eucharis c Ministers and altar servers who all contributed to making the liturgy so beau ful. Students represen ng both the school and religious educa on presented the Cardinal with spiritual bouquets at the end of Mass for his own inten ons and for the success of Renew My Church. The recep on a erwards was filled with good conversa on, laughter, and parishioners mee ng the Cardinal in person. The refreshments were tasty and there were only four finger sandwiches le over! Apparently, we were a hungry lot. This kind of event, as you can imagine, takes a lot of behind the scenes prepara on. The staff outdid themselves and worked hard for months in advance to make this liturgy and recep on something beau ful which reflected the spirit of Sacred Heart parish. The volunteers who stepped forward and organized the recep on did stellar work, as did our wonderful photographer. I could go on and on. I could also name names. You know who you are and you also know why you do what you do: for Jesus, his church, and the mission of the church. We are grateful for all those staff and lay ministers who made Sacred Heart shine on this special day. Family Film Fest The family night in our parish backyard and courtyard was deligh ul. That whole area was transformed into a perfect se ng for showing the movie. The food trucks served delicious food. In addi on, snacks and movie candy were available for the kids (and adults suffering from the sweet tooth afflic on). We had a great turnout of young families. The kids were well-behaved, especially a er the movie began (they were amazingly transfixed). We had some older kids helping with the event who also garnered service hours for Confirma on. Thanks to the area businesses who have sponsored the parish, giving us generous dona ons to assist with events such as this. And thanks, once again, to those parishioners who took this event in hand and gave of their me, talent and exper se to make it a rousing success. We would like to acknowledge and thank the following parishioners for their formal roles within the Archdiocese of Chicago: Tom Brown is currently serving as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake in Mundelein; Tim Cawley is the Chief of Parish and School Opera ons for the Archdiocese; Claudia Mann recently joined the Archdiocese as Chief Human Resources and Staff Development Officer; and Maureen Valvassori is the Parish Vitality Coordinator for Vicariate II. We extend our best wishes as each of these gi ed people carry out the work of the Church!

Hearts Connected for Community: Parish Life Love is the beauty of the soul (St. Augus ne) STEWARDSHIP AT SACRED HEART Oh Lord, giver of life and source of our freedom, we are reminded that Yours is the earth in its fullness; the world and those who dwell in it. We know that it is from your hand that we have received all we have and are and will be. Gracious and loving God, we understand that you call us to be the stewards of Your abundance, the caretakers of all you have entrusted to us. Help us always to use your gi s wisely and teach us to share them generously. May our faithful stewardship bear witness to the love of Christ in our lives. We pray this with grateful hearts in Jesus name. PAPAL TWEETS God does not disappoint! He has placed hope in our hearts so that it can blossom and bear fruit. RESPECT LIFE PRAYER October is Respect Life Month. We remember that all human beings are made in the image and likeness of God, and are precious in the sight of our Lord. Let us pray that we too, recognize the value of every human being from concep on un l natural death. For all children who will be born today: that they may come to know a world which chooses life over death and light over darkness; We pray to the Lord! WEEKLY SCRIPTURE GROUP Our scripture reflec on group meets Monday mornings a er the 8:30 a.m. Mass in the Parish Office Fireplace Room. We gather to read and reflect on the coming Sunday readings. No experience in scripture necessary! All are welcome and encouraged to join. It s a great way to ponder the word of God during the week, and hear the perspec ve of other parishioners! JOIN US!

Hearts Connected for Community: Parish Life Love is the beauty of the soul (St. AugusƟne) FOUNDER S WEEK THANK YOUS CARDINAL S MASS & RECEPTION Many thanks to His Eminence, Cardinal Blase Cupich, for joining us to celebrate our 120th Anniversary as a parish in the Archdiocese of Chicago. We also extend our thanks to the many, many parishioners who worked so hard to make our Founder s Day Liturgy so special and prayerful. This includes our past and present pastors and priests, the pastor and pastoral associate of our Sharing Parish, our lectors, our Eucharis c ministers, our musicians, our altar servers, our sacristans, our greeters, those who arranged for flowers for the Mass, our children s and adult choirs, the students who prepared the items presented in our spiritual bouquet to the Cardinal, the parishioner who volunteered their me to photograph the events of the day, our parish staff and maintenance staff. Many thanks also to those who so graciously organized and coordinated the recep on in the Parish Center a er the Mass, so that parishioners could greet the Cardinal personally and share a bite with each other. THANK YOU SO MUCH! This wonderful celebra on would not have been possible without each and every one of you! HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO ALL!
