The Sermon On The Mount Lesson 2 Influence of The Kingdom of Heaven On The World Matthew 5::13-16 The Sermon On The Mount 1. The Beatitudes Character of Kingdom Citizens Matt. 5:1-12 2. Influence of The Kingdom of Heaven On The World Matt. 5:13-16 3. Righteousness of The Kingdom of Heaven Matt. 5:17-7:12 A. Jesus, The Law, The Scribes and Pharisees and Kingdom Righteousness Matt. 5:17-48 B. Pleasing God Motive For All Righteousness Matt. 6 C. Treating Each Other Right Matt. 7:1-12 4. Entering The Kingdom of Heaven Matt. 7:13-29 2 Introduction The Beatitudes reveal the character of kingdom citizens that pleases God but is hated by the world Although persecuted for Christ s sake, we are to rejoice in righteous living As we do this, we are to positively influence the world, even those who persecute us for our faith Jesus describes our influence on the world 3 with two figures, salt and light Introduction If we live righteously and rejoice, we can influence even those hostile to the gospel and to us, to obey it If we fail to live righteously or rejoice in doing so, we will not have the influence on the world to help them be saved Danger today is the world has more of a negative influence on Christians than we are having a positive influence on the world 4 You Are The Salt of The Earth Mat 5:13 "You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men. You Are The Salt of The Earth Medically speaking, salt (sodium) is needed for several bodily functions Regarding food, salt provides flavor making it more delightful to the taste Also, salt often is used as a preservative to keep food from decaying 5 6

You Are The Salt of The Earth You Are The Salt of The Earth Christians provide flavoring for the world by living righteous lives and seeking to save the lost through the gospel The only reason the world is still standing is because there is enough spiritual salt in it If we lose our flavor, stop living a righteous life, we do not help enhance the world for the lost or for God 7 Col 4:5 Conduct yourselves with wisdom toward outsiders, making the most of the opportunity. Col 4:6 Let your speech always be with grace, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should respond to each person. 8 Salt (Righteousness) Needed To Preserve The World Gen 18:23 Abraham came near and said, "Will You indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? Gen 18:24 "Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city; will You indeed sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous who are in it? Salt (Righteousness) Needed To Preserve The World Gen 18:25 "Far be it from You to do such a thing, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous and the wicked are treated alike. Far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth deal justly?" Gen 18:26 So the LORD said, "If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare the whole place on their account." 9 10 Salt (Righteousness) Needed To Preserve The World Gen 18:32 Then he said, "Oh may the Lord not be angry, and I shall speak only this once; suppose ten are found there?" And He said, "I will not destroy it on account of the ten." Beware The Salt Losing Its Flavor (Righteousness) Eph 5:3 But immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints; Eph 5:4 and there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. 11 12

Beware The Salt Losing Its Flavor (Righteousness) Eph 5:5 For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Eph 5:6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. 13 Mat 5:14 "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; Mat 5:15 nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Mat 5:16 "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. 14 Without light, we would have no life on the earth and no means of safely navigating through darkness Spiritually speaking, Jesus is the Light of the world, perfectly reflecting the truth and glory of God to the world Through obedience to His Word, Christians are to be light, reflecting God s truth and glory to the world, those hostile The purpose is not only to save ourselves but to influence the world, who see our good works, to glorify and eventually obey God If our light is hidden or corrupted in some way, we become a part of darkness (sin) We neither glorify God in our lives nor influence others to do so toward the light 15 16 Jesus Is The Light of The World Joh 8:12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, "I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life." Why Is The World Hostile Toward Light Joh 3:19 "This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. Joh 3:20 "For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 17 18

Why Is The World Hostile Toward Light Joh 3:21 "But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God." Php 2:14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing; Php 2:15 so that you will prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world, 19 20 Php 2:16 holding fast the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I will have reason to glory because I did not run in vain nor toil in vain. 1Pe 2:9 But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God's OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 21 22 1Pe 2:10 for you once were NOT A PEOPLE, but now you are THE PEOPLE OF GOD; you had NOT RECEIVED MERCY, but now you have RECEIVED MERCY. 23 1Pe 2:11 Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul. 1Pe 2:12 Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in which they slander you as evildoers, they may because of your good deeds, as they observe them, glorify God in the day of visitation. 24

Rom 13:10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. Rom 13:11 Do this, knowing the time, that it is already the hour for you to awaken from sleep; for now salvation is nearer to us than when we believed. Rom 13:12 The night is almost gone, and the day is near. Therefore let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. Rom 13:13 Let us behave properly as in the day, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and sensuality, not in strife and jealousy. 25 26 Rom 13:14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts. Eph 5:7 Therefore do not be partakers with them; Eph 5:8 for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light 27 28 Eph 5:9 (for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth), Eph 5:10 trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. Eph 5:11 Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them; 29 Eph 5:12 for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret. Eph 5:13 But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light. Eph 5:14 For this reason it says, "Awake, sleeper, And arise from the dead, And Christ will shine on you." 30

Eph 5:15 Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, Eph 5:16 making the most of your time, because the days are evil. Eph 5:17 So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 31 The Sermon On The Mount 1. The Beatitudes Character of Kingdom Citizens Matt. 5:1-12 2.
