Third Edition of the Roman Missal Lesson Guidelines 6 th Grade-8 th Grade Catechist Instructions: On November 27, 2011, a new translation of the Roman Missal will be used throughout the United States (and other English speaking countries). The lesson guideline before you has been created to assist you, the catechist, in explaining the English translation of Third Edition of the Roman Missal to your students as well as to catechize your students about the Liturgy. The material in this lesson guideline has been based upon the material in the diocesan Catechetical Curriculum Guidelines and appears below in the same format. Thus, for the 2011-2012 school year, it can be used in place of the corresponding material on the Liturgy and the Sacrament of the Eucharist in the Catechetical Curriculum Guidelines. If this material is usually covered later in the school year, it would be ideal to move it to before November 27 so that the students will be well prepared for the new translation of the Roman Missal. Words which are in bold are the vocabulary words which students should be familiar with at the conclusion of the lesson(s). A list of all the vocabulary words present in this lesson guideline appears at the end of the document. Words which are in italics are direct quotes as they appear in the Third Edition of the Roman Missal. In the column entitled, Teacher Notes there are a few activity suggestions. 1071-1073 Liturgy is the public work of the Church. It includes the rites and ceremonies of the Mass and Sacraments. Ephesians 3:4-12 Preaching God s plan 1131 1113 1124-1125 1323 1341 1324 A sacrament is an outward sign of God s grace. The sacraments were instituted by Christ and are received through the life of the Church. Through the action of the Holy Spirit each sacrament brings a special divine grace into our lives. There are seven sacraments that come to us through the Church. They are: Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation, Reconciliation, Matrimony, Holy Orders, and Anointing of the Sick. Each sacrament uses visible, physical signs and symbols, and special words and gestures, known as rites. When the Church speaks of signs and symbols, She is not speaking about ordinary signs and symbols each person encounters many times during the day. Ordinary signs and symbols represent or point us toward something else. For example, a stop sign represents that a driver should stop but the stop sign does not cause the car to stop. The signs and symbols of the sacraments, along with the appropriate words, are the actual cause of a new reality, God s grace. For example, the water poured in Baptism while saying the words, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, causes the grace of cleansing each person from sin. Each sacrament has its own special rite. The rite is the words and gestures that are necessary to assure the proper administration of the Sacrament. The Holy Eucharist is a sacrifice and a sacrament. It is a sacrament which represents in the Mass the sacrificial death of Christ and His Resurrection making it possible for us to eat His Body and drink His Blood. The celebration of the Eucharist is an oneness in time with the Last Supper and Calvary. Do this in memory of me. The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life, because it contains the Church s entire Christian treasure that is Christ Himself. 1 Corinthians 12:4-6 Gifts, service and working of God Give students examples from the Sacraments of Initiation. Ask the students, what are some signs and symbols you encounter every day? Show the students pictures of various signs and symbols they may be familiar with. 1323 1337-1344 1333, 1544 1406-1419 The Holy Eucharist is a gift Christ gave to His Church at the Last Supper before He suffered and died. There is a scriptural basis for the Sacrament of the Eucharist. The accounts are given in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The Eucharist is prefigured in the Old Testament by the people of Israel eating unleavened bread every year at Passover, the sacrifice of Isaac, and Yahweh providing manna from heaven. The Eucharist is the sacrament in which the Lord Jesus Himself, under appearances of bread and wine, is presented, offered, and received. By this sacrament, the Church lives and grows. Emphasis needs to be placed on the real presence of Jesus under the appearance of bread and wine. We gather at the Eucharistic celebration to praise and thank the Father, to receive God s word, and to celebrate Jesus Paschal Mystery. Jesus feeds us with His Body and Blood making us one with Him and each other. 1324 The Eucharist is the greatest of the sacraments of the Church. In November, the words we pray at Mass will be changing a little. The documents of the Church and the Rites of the Sacraments, including the Mass, are originally written in the Latin Language. To help everyone participate more fully in the Sacraments, the Church translates the Rites of the Sacraments, including the Mass, into the different languages of the world, including English. The English translation of the Liturgy which the Church has been using since the 1970 s was a temporary translation that was to be used while a more thorough translation was being made. There is now a new translation of the Mass (the Roman Missal) which will help us to pray better. Find copies of a document in English and in Latin. Show these to the students. 1346, 1348,1408 We will begin using the English translation of the 3 rd Edition of the Roman Missal at the beginning of the Liturgical year, the First Sunday of Advent which occurs on November 27 this year (2011). To prepare for this we need to study and learn about the Mass so we can pray better. At Mass, we gather together in the parish church as God's family. Christ acts through the priest as we celebrate the Mass. The Mass includes: The Introductory Rites The Liturgy of the Word The Liturgy of the Eucharist The Concluding Rites Introductory Rites: The celebration of the Eucharist begins with the Introductory Rites. This is a way for the community gathered together to prepare for the Liturgy of the Word and Liturgy of the Eucharist. Order Entrance Procession Entrance Song Veneration of the Altar Sign of the Cross; greeting and introduction Act of Penitence Sunday Renewal of Baptism (Rite of Sprinkling) Penitential Rite Kyrie ( Lord have mercy ) Gloria ( Glory to God ) Collect (Opening Prayer) The Mass begins with the Sign of the Cross. The Sign of the Cross is an ancient prayer in which we call upon God and invite Him to be with us and guard us. The Sign of the Cross is also a confession of our belief in one God; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. When invited by the priest at Mass, each person should make the Sign of the Cross and call to mind the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Each person can reverently make the Sign of the Cross in prayer many times each day to recall the sacrifice that Christ made to save each person. Matthew 18:20 Where two or more are gathered Discuss how a person might prepare for different activities. After the Sign of the Cross, the priest says: The Lord be with you. We will respond: And with your Spirit. 2 Timothy 4:22 Our response acknowledges the special gift of the Holy Spirit the priest receives when he is ordained. This special gift enables the priest to celebrate the Sacraments, such as the Eucharist and Reconciliation. To continue to prepare for the graces of the Sacrament of the Eucharist, each person expresses sorrow for their sins. This is called the Penitential Rite. We pray: I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault In saying this prayer, each person is called to recognize that he or she has knowingly damaged their relationship with God through their own fault (sin) in their thoughts, words, and deeds. During this prayer, we gently tap our hearts with our fists to show how sorry we are for our sins. The prayer at the Penitential Rite is not the same as the Sacrament of Reconciliation. If a person has committed a mortal sin, he or she should refrain from receiving Holy Communion until confessing this sin in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Once we have expressed sorrow for our sins, we ask for God s mercy. We pray: Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. In this prayer, we recognize that we have sinned against God and we trust in God to grant us His mercy and forgive our sinfulness. In the Gloria, we praise God because He is all good and worthy of all our love and praise. This prayer comes from the song of the angels to the shepherds announcing Jesus birth. In the Gloria we pray: We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory. These lines recognize the great glory and praise which rightly belongs to the Blessed Trinity. Luke 18:13 Luke 2:14 Practice saying this prayer as a class so that students will have it memorized. 1349 Begotten: This is a difficult word which explains that Jesus Christ, the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity is not created but comes from God, the Father in a unique way and is one with God, the Father and God, the Holy Spirit. Liturgy of the Word: The Liturgy of the Word includes readings from the Old and New Testaments. The Liturgy of the Word is an encounter with the Word of God proclaimed. Each person should listen carefully to the words of Scripture during the Readings, Psalm, and Gospel and listen closely to the priest or deacon s homily to hear what God has to teach. The Creed is a statement of what we, the Church, believe. The Creeds we use today come from the early Church. There are two Creeds that we say as a Church. When a person prays the Rosary they typically say the Apostle s Creed. In the Liturgy (in the United States), the Church usually prays the Nicene Creed. The two Creeds express the same truths about what we as a Church believe but in slightly different words. We start the Creed by saying, I believe proclaiming our belief in all that God has taught through the Church. In November, we will hear a few new words in the Nicene Creed. Consubstantial: This word means that Jesus, the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity, is one with God, the Father. Ask the students to read the Gospel before attending Mass and to reflect upon what they have read. Show the students the Apostle s Creed and the Nicene Creed side by side so that the students can see the similarities and differences. Practice saying the new translation of the Creed as a class. 1350-1355 1373 Incarnate: This word means that the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity became fully human. Jesus, the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity, is truly God and truly man. In the General Intercessions, we pray for the needs of those in our world and in our community. Liturgy of the Eucharist: The Eucharist contains the Church s entire spiritual treasure Christ Himself. At the Last Supper, Jesus Christ instituted the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Through the reception of this Sacrament a person receives the very Body and Blood of Christ. Christ is truly present under the appearance of bread and wine. After the altar is prepared, the priest asks God to accept our gifts of bread and wine. When the gifts of bread and wine are given to the priest, each person is invited to spiritually offer their life, their joys, and their sufferings to God. In this way, we offer God all the good gifts we have been given and we offer our very selves back to God. The Congregation then says the acclamation which begins: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts. The word hosts refers to the army of angels at God s command. Isaiah 6:1-3 In this prayer, we proclaim God s holiness and power over all creation. Revelation 4:3 1353 1413 1376-1377, 1413 The epiclesis takes place when the priest holds his hands over the bread and wine and asks the Father to send the Holy Spirit so that by His power the gifts will become the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. At the consecration, the priest raises the bread and wine in his hands and says the Eucharistic Prayer. He prays: this is my body, this is my blood, and at that moment bread and wine are changed into the Body of Christ and Blood of Christ. This is what we call Transubstantiation. In the Sacrament of the Eucharist, Christ is truly present through His Body and Blood under the appearances of bread and wine. He becomes present through transubstantiation which means that the bread and wine are transformed into the very Body and Blood of Christ. This happens during the Eucharistic prayer, through the action of the Holy Spirit and through the words that the priest prays. It is through this transformation that Christ totally comes to us through the receiving of Holy Communion. In the Preparation for Communion, the Priest says: Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. The people respond: Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof. In Holy Communion, our bodies become a tabernacle, a special home, for Jesus just as He entered into the houses of the faithful while on earth. After this prayer, the priest receives Holy Communion and the Congregation reverently receives. Each person should prepare themselves before receiving the Eucharist. 1415 1387 1398-1401 1406 1385 To receive Christ in the Eucharist, one must be in the state of grace. This means to be free from any serious sins. Each person is required to fast from food and drink, except water and medicine, for one hour before receiving the Holy Eucharist. Only Catholics in the state of grace may receive the Eucharist at the Catholic Mass. Catholics are not permitted to receive communion at non- Catholic Christian churches. When a person receives Holy Communion, they receive the Body and Blood of Christ to eat and drink. Because Christ is truly present in the Eucharist one must receive Him with great reverence. This includes a bow of the head, reception on the tongue or in a clean cupped hand, and the response Amen. After we receive the Eucharist, we should spend the time of thanksgiving recognizing Christ within us. 1391-1397 Receiving Christ s Body strengthens our relationship with Him and the Church. 1 Corinthians 11:27-29 To be worthy Matthew 8:8 1393-1395, 1397 1392, 1402-1405 1379 The effects of receiving the Eucharist: It strengthens our union with Christ and each other. Forgives venial sin and preserves us from mortal sin. It impels us to serve the poor as we recognize Christ in them. Just as the food we eat gives us bodily life, so the Eucharist nourishes our spiritual life. The Eucharist strengthens us on our journey to eternal life. Jesus Christ is truly present in the Eucharist as long as it has the appearance of bread and wine. Consecrated hosts are reserved in the Tabernacle for Adoration and bringing Communion to the Sick. The appropriate reverence to the Tabernacle is a genuflection or a bow of reverence. invites them to go out into the world and spread the Gospel. Order Greeting: The Lord be with you. Blessing: Sign of the Cross Dismissal: Go forth The dismissal tells us to bring Christ to others through the way we live our daily lives. The priest will say one of the four options for the dismissal: Go forth, the Mass has ended. Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord. Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life. Go in peace. The people respond: Thanks be to God. Great Commission Our response does not mean we are happy Mass is over, but that we are thanking God for the graces we have been given in the Sacrament to live our lives as good Christians.
