User s Using Principles & Choices with the Credo Series published by Veritas Guide

User s Guide Principles and Choices is a complete 9 th 12 th grade high school curriculum, which teaches key principles to help students make good choices throughout their lives. The entire curriculum is based on the book Ten Universal Principles: A Brief Philosophy of the Life Issues, by Robert J. Spitzer, S.J., Ph.D. Principles and Choices uses contemporary, high quality student texts, teacher materials, and multimedia resources. The series is designed for use as a four-week supplement in a core curriculum class based on the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Doctrinal Elements of a Curriculum Framework for the Development of Catechetical Materials for Young People of High School Age, 2007 (Curriculum Framework). There are three books in the Principles and Choices series, each with four chapters. We recommend teaching each book in a four-week time frame in each grade Book One in the 9 th grade, Book Two in the 10 th grade, and Book Three in the 11 th grade. The charts on the following pages lay out four options for integrating Principles & Choices with The Credo Series, published by Veritas. The paragraphs below explain these options in brief. Option A: Each Principles & Choices book would follow the indicated chapter in The Credo Series. By implementing all four chapters in the P&C book consecutively, you will ensure the best continuity for your students learning. Each chapter should take one week to complete. Option B: Present each P&C book at the beginning of the second semester of each grade. This option would require a second-semester pacing adjustment to allow adequate time for the inclusion of a four-week P&C unit. The benefit of this model is student engagement and enthusiasm as they begin a fresh new semester with such a pertinent topic. : Integrate P&C within the course of study by breaking apart chapters to coincide with topics from the core curriculum. In order to reinforce and integrate systematic learning, it is suggested that the class perform the one-act play at the end of the semester and/or use the Life in a Flash cards throughout the semester. Option D: Present each book at the end of the second semester of each grade. This option would require a second-semester pacing adjustment to allow adequate time for the inclusion of a four-week Principles & Choices unit. 2014 Healing the Culture www.principlesandchoices.com 855-664-6598 Page 2
