To preach the acceptable year of the Lord And he closed the book fulfilled in your ears This day is this scripture
First Coming Second Coming.
you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, WHO? Thessalonians saints, Paul, with other believers died years ago. WHAT? Anticipating their rest WHEN? The day Jesus returns to earth to establish His kingdom. HOW? They would have to be resurrected.
taking vengeance them Who punished everlasting destruction When he shall come Thessalonian persecutors Judgment of unbelievers. WHEN? Jesus return to earth (as in verse 7). HOW? They must also be resurrected

all that are in the graves they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation
PREMILLENNIAL And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life. POSTMILLENNIAL And they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. Christ treats these events as a single, complex event. Paul does the same thing in 2 Thessalonians 1:7-10. The whole event (single) under Christ s Coming is complex events that would take at least 1,000 years!
Rapture of the Church Church Age The Tribulation Millennium Second Coming of Jesus Christ
Rapture of the Church Church Age The Tribulation Millennium Second Coming of Jesus Christ
2 Thessalonians 2:1-2 Matthew 24:31 If this is true, then Posttribulational Rapture is in view here.
coming of our Lord Jesus Christ gathering together the day of Christ The gathering with Jesus known as the rapture will take place on the day of the Lord or his glorious second coming. They appear to be one event.
together his elect gather The gathering in 2 Thes 2:1 is the same word used here to assemble the elect at the sound of a trumpet. This gathering is clearly a Posttribulational in context.
The Second Coming = Gathering with Jesus The Gathering with Jesus = Day of the Lord The Day of the Lord = Post-Trib Rapture Gathering in Matthew 24:31 is Post-Trib
The Second Coming = Gathering with Jesus The Gathering with Jesus = Day of the Lord The Day of the Lord = Post-Trib Rapture Gathering in Matthew 24:31 is Post-Trib Important reminder:
Somebody was teaching that the Day of the Lord had already arrived (2 Thes 2:2). If the Day of the Lord is the glorious Second Coming to earth, then the Thessalonian believers would have thought that they are living after the Second Coming. And if they are living after the Second Coming, then they would have been in the Millennium. BUT they are experiencing persecution!
If we construct a logic from a text(s) that would makes sense to us but not to the original recipients of the letter, then our understanding of the text(s) is incomplete or wrong! Just because the same words are used in two texts does not mean that they are talking about the same thing or the same event. How would you know the meaning of any word? By how the word is used in context!!!
First of all, the texts do not teach that the Day of the Lord corresponds to either the Second Coming or the gathering. Also, the gathering in 2 Thes 2:1 and the gathering in Matt 24:31 do not teach they are the same event. The key to a correct understanding is the Day of the Lord. So what is the Day of the Lord?
God stepping in to demonstrate He is in control. Other terms: day of God s wrath, that day, great tribulation, time of Jacob s trouble, etc. God judges His enemies, deliver His people, and accomplish His sovereign purpose. Past Day of the Lord events: Assyria to the northern kingdom of Israel (Amos 5:18, 20). Babylon to the southern kingdom of Judah (Ezekiel 7:19; 13:5). Babylon to Egypt and its allies (Ezekiel 30:3-4) Medo-Persia to Babylon (Isaiah 13:6, 9).
It is the outpouring of Divine Wrath followed by Divine Blessing. Texts on divine wrath: - Joel 2:1-2 - Amos 5:18-20 - Zephaniah 1:14-15 - 1 Thessalonians 5:2-4 Texts on divine blessing: - Joel 3:17-18 - Zechariah 14:8-9 It is called the Great and Terrible Day of the Lord. (Joel 3:14-16) Even believers who enter that day will have to endure the wrath to reach the blessing.
It is the outpouring of Divine Wrath followed by Divine Blessing. It concludes with God s wrath and begins with intense blessing. The turning point: the glorious Second Coming. Second Coming of Jesus Christ Wrath Blessing Great and Terrible Day of the Lord
Paul wrote back to debunk the false teachings and forged letters saying that the Day of the Lord had already arrived (2 Thes 2:2) He presented evidence to correct this error. They are experiencing persecution Paul is talking about in 2 Timothy 3:12: Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. The persecution of that day is like no other!
Paul reminds them of truth he had already taught them. The Day of the Lord cannot possibly be equivalent to Jesus return to earth at the end of the Tribulation. 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 2 Thessalonians 2:6-12 The Departure (falling away) (v.3) Revelation of the Man of Lawlessness (v.3) Description of the Man of Lawlessness (v.4) Removal of Restrainer (v.6-7) Revelation of the Wicked One (v.8) Description of the Wicked One (v.8-10)
2 Thessalonians 2:3-8 Before the Day of the Lord can begin, the Antichrist must be revealed. The Restrainer will one day be removed. Consequently, the Antichrist will be revealed. Then the Day of the Lord can begin.
the LORD thy God hath driven thee shalt return unto the LORD thy God, and shalt obey with all thine heart, and with all thy soul That then the LORD thy God will return and gather thee from all the nations will bring thee into the land which thy fathers possessed, and thou shalt possess it; and he will do thee good
Israel would rebel and be scattered among the nations. This happened in AD 70. Time would come when Israel would repent. As a result, God would regather the nation into the land. (Not the event in 1948)
When will Israel repent? At the end of the Tribulation Zechariah 12:9-11 that day I will seek to destroy all the nations That come against Jerusalem I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, The spirit of grace and of supplications day that
Christ will be revealed in the air. He will destroy all the enemies of Israel (same as the enemies of God). Israel will repent and turn to the Messiah. Angels will gather the Jews from all over the world. Christ will then separate believers from unbelievers in the judgment of Israel. (Ezekiel 20:34-38)
They are two different gatherings of two different groups of people at two different times! The Rapture of the Church at the beginning of Daniel s 70 th Week. The gathering of Israel at Jesus Second Coming at the end of Daniel s 70 th Week.
The Olivet Discourse: Matt 24, Mk 13, Lk 21 3 Specific Questions 1. When shall these things be? 2. What shall be the sign of Your coming? 3. What shall be the sign of the end of the age? Things to remember: The Olivet Discourse is about Israel, not the Church. The disciples were anticipating the Millennium, not the Rapture. The coming is about the Second Coming, not the Rapture.
There is no clear or direct references either to the Church or to the Rapture. They are signs of the return of Jesus to earth at the end of the Tribulation.
they as in the days the flood came, and took them all away so shall also
The flood took away those that would go into judgment. Noah and his family were left behind. Believers will be left behind!
together his elect gather
It is the regathering of Israel to the land. Other events at the Second Coming: Israel is also taken for judgment. The lost are taken away for judgment. The Gentile nations are judged. In summary, two judgments will happen upon the return of Jesus the judgment of Israel and the judgment of the Gentile nations.
keep thee from the hour all the world that dwell upon the earth WHO? The church in Philadelphia. Is it only for them? Is it meant for all Christians? them One thing is clear, there cannot be a partial rapture since it is based on obedience not grace. Therefore the promise has to apply to all Church saints.
If we are on the earth we cannot escape the hour, because the hour falls upon everyone who lives on the earth. To be kept from the hour then is to be taken off the earth before the hour begins. This is called Pretribulational Rapture.
There are two different gatherings of two different groups of people at two different times! The Rapture of the Church at the beginning of Daniel s 70 th Week. Our Blessed Hope. (Titus 2:13) To be kept from the hour the Day of the Lord. The gathering of Israel at Jesus Second Coming at the end of Daniel s 70 th Week.
Just because they look the same, doesn t mean they are the same.
