I believe you will forgive me for brightening up when I heard Msgr. Peter s we were going to a place where they serve rice. Yes, we had dinner at a Chinese restaurant in Italy! (It was no surprise that there was a group of Filipino pilgrims dining in there, too. It was funny that when they saw Msgr. Peter, they mistook him for a Filipino and thought I was Vietnamese!) It was a good evening of updating about Church matters, and although he enjoys his work in the Vatican, he still misses parish life especially Resurrection. The next morning, we celebrated Holy Mass again at St. Peter s Basilica. I remember celebrating the Mass a little bit slower than usual because it was my going to be my last Mass at St. Peter s (at least for this trip). I pred for you and your loved ones. After the Mass, Msgr. Peter gave us a more extensive and detailed tour of the Basilica. Then after a quick breakfast, Jne and I took the Metro train to see the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Wall. Why outside the wall? At the beginning of the 4 th century, Emperor Constantine put an end to persecution of Christians. He ordered the excavation of the place where St. Paul was venerated and believed to be buried. (St. Paul was beheaded in Rome sometime between 65 and 67 A.D. during the time of Emperor Nero.) Constantine had a church built on top of the grave of St. Paul which is located outside the wall built by Emperor Aurelian in 275 A.D. to protect Rome from the assault of the Barbarians. It had been the largest Basilica in Rome until St. Peter s Basilica was reconstructed and consecrated in the early 17 th century, and the latter became the biggest of all. I pred my rosary at the Chapel of Adoration on the left wing of the Basilica and sted there for a while. Then Jne sat beside me and whispered, Father, it s time to go now. (We often got separated as soon as we entered a church and would just meet again when it was time to leave.) At this point, we have visited all four major basilicas in Rome, have seen a few other places of worship and historical places-and we were ready to see other churches OUTSIDE of Rome. We packed up our things and took a taxi to get our rental car. It was a little 2013 VW Passat with stick shift and was very exciting to drive. (I was glad I still knew how to drive a stick shift car.) With the help of my Garmin GPS that I brought for this trip, we found our destination in Prato, Italy, which would be our home base as we visited other churches and historical places. It was a 4-hour drive from Rome and we arrived dead tired so we just rested the rest of the d. The following d, we set out to see the city of Pisa and its famous leaning tower, and of course the cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta (St. Mary of the Assumption) and the huge baptistery. Inside the cathedral is a beautiful painting of Mary as she was assumed into heaven (aside from many other beautiful frescoes) and the renowned Galileo s lamp. The main altar area was being reconstructed so we did not have access to it. I stopped in front of the Byzantine style chapel that had the image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help where I started my rosary-up to the third mystery but then we had to check out the baptistery, the biggest one I have ever seen in my life. The baptistery looked like a circular chapel with its own altar and pulpit. It was so beautiful and certainly speaks about how important the Sacrament of Initiation is to every Christian. As we walked out, we took pictures of the Leaning Tower of Pisa (with us pretending to catch it from falling to its side). Jne asked me if I wanted to take a tour of the tower and I said, No, I am not going up there. She asked, Why not? I said, Because it is LEANING! (TO BE CONCLUDED) GOD LOVES YOU ALL VERY DEARLY. In Christ, FR. ROMY

H Tough economic times weigh on everyone. While some people seem to be able to afford everything, go everywhere, and enjoy what they want, there are so many people that have come to a point in their lives where every penny is pinched and every purchase scrutinized. Data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that consumers are spending less on big-ticket items to afford basics. Households hit by loffs, the tight job market, and heavy debt burdens are holding back on spending. The savings rate has dropped, indicating that consumers are using up scant resources to st a loat. Even people who might be able to spend a little more are being cautious, because the economic mood is so gloomy. The words of Jesus in tod's Gospel could well characterize the overall global experience, "on earth nations will be in dism." It might seem a bit odd that we begin Advent, which is a season of hope, with a rather dismal and disturbing Gospel. The end of time is not something that we usually think about to any great extent. We are often more concerned with the anxieties of daily life, as the Gospel puts it. Those daily worries seem like enough for most of us. We don't need to add the end of the world on top of it. But for many people tod, in this economic environment, daily anxieties can seem like the end of the world. Bills mount up, tensions grow, jobs or homes are lost. We need this season of hope to renew our own longings and expectations. The prophet Isaiah reminds us that God ful ills his promises. God's mercy endures in every generation, including ours. The actions we take to assist others become an expression of God's mercy and a sign of God's renewing hope. In the weeks to come even a small kindness to someone could help to ease anxiety, and help that person believe that redemption is at hand.
