Bible Road Trip ~ covers Exodus chapters 1-18; God rescues Israel from Egypt. This week, we begin our two week study of Exodus, the second book of the Pentateuch. We re still reading in the genre of historical narrative. That means we re reading real history, told in the form of a story. The story of Israel s exodus from Egypt is our focus in week six. The first section of Exodus enters Egypt 430 years after we last saw Jacob s family. Now a mighty nation, Jacob s descendents are enslaved by a Pharaoh who no longer remembers Joseph or his role in saving Egypt. Even more horrifying, the Pharaoh has ordered the execution of every infant Israelite boy. The babies are drowned in the Nile. Here we are introduced to little Moses, whose mother saves his life by placing him in the Nile in a basket of reeds. Found and adopted by Pharaoh s daughter, Moses is raised as an Egyptian prince. In adulthood, God calls Moses to rescue God s chosen people. We ll see the ten plagues God visited upon Egypt, watch the nation of Israel flee through the Red Sea, and witness the beginning of Israel s journey into the wilderness. Throughout the narrative, we will learn more about who God is. If you choose to study the beliefs of ancient Egypt, you ll discover many interesting facts that will add to your understanding of the story of Exodus. For instance, Egyptians believed their king to be a deity. He was supposed to be responsible for regulating the Nile, and for causing the sun to rise and set. Also, the Egyptians believed that their name must always be spoken, or they would cease to exist in the afterworld. This information about the ancient Egyptian religion explains much about the first 18 chapters of Exodus. Pharaoh s heart was already hard he had declared himself to be a god. Several of the plagues, such as the bloody Nile and the three days of darkness, directly mock Pharaoh s deity. Throughout the Old Testament, the names of neighboring kings are carefully recorded. Yet, the name of this Egyptian king is completely ignored. Why? Could this be God s response to the Egyptian practice of remembering the names of kings so that Pharaohs could remain eternal? It s interesting to ponder! In the Grammar stages, our prayer focus this week is the nation of Egypt, and for the Dialectic and Rhetoric stages we ll study Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait.
