Last Judgement Sunday November 8 & 11, 2018 WELCOME TO ST. JOHN S We re thrilled that you are here today. Please sign the Friendship Register at the end of your pew so that we have a record of your visit. And please come and worship with us again. Please also introduce yourself to Pastor Kuske. He would love to meet you and to serve you in whatever way he can. OUR FACILITIES Our restrooms are located to the right as you leave the sanctuary in the Mother s Room and downstairs next to the exit. The members of St. John s believe that families should be encouraged to worship together. (Church, like much of life, needs to be taught to young children.) If your young one needs some time out, we have an A/V-equipped Mother s Room just outside the sanctuary to your right. If you need anything during the service, please feel free to ask an usher. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY The readings for this Sunday set in sharp contrast the attitudes of believers and unbelievers. The attitude of the unbeliever to any talk of judgment by God can only be denial or terror. But the attitude of the child of God is formed by the Word of God. As that Word has created his faith during his life on earth, so it molds his confidence in the face of death and judgment. But the Word of God and the faith it creates will be seen as fully vindicated by death and judgment. Therefore, we look forward to the day on which we pass into the courtroom of God to hear the Not guilty! verdict which brought us to faith in the first place. There is no better preparation for death and judgment than a firm clinging to that gracious verdict. There is no better life than the one that has that verdict as its center and the motivation for everything in it. PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP Lord God, merciful Savior, when the Day of Judgment comes with fire, our only hope will be your grace. Keep us alert and watchful for Christ s return and for Jesus sake let the Sun of righteousness bring healing now and joy to our resurrected bodies on that Day. Amen. Please Note Sunday service is video-recorded and will be aired on our local cable channel at noon today. If you would like a copy, please speak to pastor after the service. 2

PLEASE STAND M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen CONFESSION OF SINS M: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. LORD, HAVE MERCY (Kyrie) ABSOLUTION M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen 4

PRAYER AND PRAISE M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord. GLORY BE TO GOD (Gloria in Excelsis) 5

PRAYER OF THE DAY M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you! M: Let us pray. O God, the strength of all who trust in you, mercifully hear our prayers. Be gracious to us in our weakness and give us strength to keep your commandments in all we say and do; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen THE WORD FIRST LESSON Malachi 4:1-3 Surely the day is coming; it will burn like a furnace. All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble, and that day that is coming will set them on fire, said the Lord Almighty. Not a root or a branch will be left to them. 2 But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings. And you will go out and leap like calves released from the stall. 3 Then you will trample down the wicked; they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day when I do these things, says the Lord Almighty. 6

PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 90 Christian Worship, page 99 Lord, you have been our dwelling place* throughout all generations. Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world,* from everlasting to everlasting you are God. For a thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by,* or like a watch in the night. Refrain You have set our iniquities before you,* our secret sins in the light of your presence. You turn mortals back to dust.* You sweep them away in the sleep of death. The length of our days is seventy years or eighty, if we have the strength;* yet their span is but trouble and sorrow. Teach us to number our days aright,* that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Refrain (continued on following page) 7

Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love,* that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. Glory be to the Father and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,* is now, and will be forever. Amen. Refrain Refrain Tune: Eugene Englert. 1986 GIA Publications, Inc., Chicago, IL, www.giamusic.com. All rights reserved. Used by permission. EPISTLE LESSON Hebrews 9:24-28 24 For Christ did not enter a man-made sanctuary that was only a copy of the true one; he enters heaven itself, now to appear for us in God s presence. 25 Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. 26 Then Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27 Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgement, 28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him. VERSE OF THE DAY (Matthew 24:42) M: Alleluia. Watch therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. Alleluia. 8

PLEASE STAND GOSPEL John 5:19-30 After the announcement of the gospel, the congregation sings: C: Glory be to you, O Lord! 19 Jesus gave them this answer: I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, to your amazement he will show him even greater things than these. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him. 24 I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. 25 I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man. 28 Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and come out those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned. 30 By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me. After the Gospel, the congregation sings: C: Praise be to you, O Christ! 9

APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PLEASE BE SEATED 10

Announcements Sponsors: This week s radio and TV broadcasts are sponsored to the glory of our Risen Lord by Duane and Lorene Belter to honor Duane s 77 th birthday (11/9). Many thanks! Sunday Morning Bible Class: We explore the whole book of Hebrews: how Jesus as a High Priest in the order of Melchizedek defines the heart of our faith. Thursday Morning Adult Bible Study: We will investigate the book of Judges. There is a pattern to spirituality which God makes clear in Judges. We encounter this pattern in our time and culture as well. How can we stop the negatives of that pattern today? Veterans Day Ammo Can: This Veterans Day, our congregation s Lutheran Military Support Group (LMSG) is asking for donations in support of our military men, women, and their families. LMSG, a partnership of ELS and WELS veterans, is working to grow awareness of and bring Christian support to military members and their families in our congregations and beyond. By placing your gift in the AMMO can in the narthex, you are supporting the work of local congregations that are ministering to nearby military families, the WELS European chaplain program, and global broadcasts of Time of Grace to our military. Questions? See Jim Allen, or visit www.lutheranmilitary.org. THANK YOU for standing shoulder to shoulder with those serving our nation! Hunter s Worship: Thursday, November 15 th at 6:30 pm will be a hunter s worship service. Come in camo, if you want! All are welcome. Christmas Light Parade: The Light Parade is coming up Saturday, November 17 th, and we are in need of Nativity actors for the float as well as people to walk behind the float to hand out flyers and goodies. If you have a truck and are willing to pull the float, that would be great, too. We will meet at church at 4 pm for pizza and will leave for the parade at about 5 pm. Contact Brent Bailey for more info, (609)393-9046. Please join us! Ladies Aid Shut-in Baskets: Ladies Aid is collecting for and delivering Shut-in Baskets Monday, November 19. They are looking for donations. These baskets will go to men and women in nursing homes and individual residences, so items must be individually wrapped candies and snacks, tea and hot chocolate, gum or personal items such as purse-size hand lotions, and socks. No homemade items, please. THANK YOU!! Thanks to all who donated time, effort, and candy to make St. John s Trunk-Or-Treat a success. We had over 500 visitors this year! 18

St. Vincent de Paul Thanksgiving Day Banquet: The members of St. Vincent de Paul cordially invite you to attend their annual Thanksgiving Day Banquet.
