THANKSGIVING Gratitude Is Contentment November 22, 2017 7:00 p.m. November 23, 2017 10:00 a.m. AS WE GATHER Gratitude does not depend on what is given or what is received. Gratitude is an attitude of the heart. One with a grateful heart stops immediately. Nothing else can go on until thanksgiving is expressed. That is what we see in the one leper who is healed. He cannot go back to his old life, nor can he begin his new life until he returns to Jesus, the source of healing, and offers Him thanks and praise. Our nation has been richly blessed by God. Each of us has received mercies new every morning. The key to contentment and peace is neither the abundance of gifts nor an absence, but a heart that returns thanks to the source of those gifts. Today we pause to do that, as a nation, as a people, and as Christians. PREPARATION HYMN Come, Ye Thankful People, Come LSB 892 Come, ye thankful people, come; Raise the song of harvest home. All be safely gathered in Ere the winter storms begin; God, our maker, doth provide For our wants to be supplied. Come to God s own temple, come; Raise the song of harvest home. Verse 2 All the world is God s own field, Fruit unto His praise to yield; Wheat and tares together sown, Unto joy or sorrow grown. First the blade and then the ear, then the full corn shall appear. Lord of harvest, grant that we Wholesome grain and pure may be.

Verse 3 For the Lord, our God, shall come And shall take His harvest home. From His field shall in that day All offenses purge away, Give His angels charge at last In the fire the tares to cast, But the fruitful ears to store In His garner evermore. Verse 4 Even so, Lord, quickly come To Thy final harvest home; Gather Thou Thy people in, Free from sorrow, free from sin. There forever purified, In Thy garner to abide: Come with all Thine angels, come, Raise the glorious harvest home. INVOCATION Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Pastor: Let us confess our sins in the presence of God and of one another. People: I confess to God Almighty, before the whole company of heaven and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned in thought, word, and deed by my fault, by my own fault, by my own most grievous fault; wherefore I pray God Almighty to have mercy on me, forgive me all my sins, and bring me to everlasting life. Amen. Pastor: The almighty and merciful Lord grant you pardon, forgiveness, and remission of all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. Pastor: May He who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. The peace of the Lord be with you. People: And also with you. 2

HYMN OF PRAISE We Praise You, O God LSB 785 We praise You, O God, our Redeemer, Creator; In grateful devotion our tribute we bring. We lay it before You, we kneel and adore You; We bless Your holy name, glad praises we sing. Verse 2 We worship You, God of our fathers, we bless You; Through trial and tempest our guide You have been. When perils o er-take us, You will not forsake us, And with Your help, O Lord, our struggles we win. Verse 3 With voices united our praises we offer And gladly our songs of thanksgiving we raise. With You, Lord, beside us, Your strong arm will guide us. To you, our great Redeemer, forever be praise! So, thank you, Lord, so, thank you, Lord, for all of the treasures of life, for all of your gifts of life. For the beauty of the earth, for the glory of the skies, for the love which from our birth over and around us Lord of all to thee we raise this our hymn of grateful praise. The treasures of live are meant for the sharing. Blessed to be blessings, our cup overflows. And now is the time to celebrate harvest by giving to others and helping them grow. APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Pastor will lead a prayer for all people according to their various needs. At the end of each petition, he will say, Lord, in Your Mercy. Congregation responds, hear our prayer. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. LORD S PRAYER (Luke 11:2-4) People: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. GRACE SPACE And Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs." - Matthew 19: 14 At Immanuel Lutheran Church, as Jesus did, we welcome children of all ages as integral members of the body of Christ, and we welcome the sounds and activity that accompany them! There are a number of options and activities designed for children to experience and participate in worship according to their needs, we trust families to work out the best option(s) for them and their child(ren) on any given day. We also understand that it takes a village to raise a child. A few tips for engaging our families with small children include: Greeting/learning the names of the young children who sit near you in worship. Offering to read or color with one child during worship, especially if another child in the family is especially fussy or upset. Helping preschoolers and elementary-aged kids to navigate the liturgy, locate the songs/hymns, etc. (Children learn to worship by participating!) Inviting kids to serve alongside you in worship, as greeters, ushers, etc. Grace Space will be provided at all services, supervision as available. Otherwise, we ask you to supervise your children when they are using Today s Service will be posted late Sunday evening at ilcpalatine.com Holy Communion is offered to those who have been instructed in what the Scriptures teach about Communion. We believe the Bible teaches: 1) Jesus Christ is our only Lord and Savior from all sin, death, and the power of evil; 2) The Risen Christ is really present in the Sacrament and that with the bread and wine we receive His Body and Blood; and 3) We resolve to dedicate our lives to the service of our Lord in His Body, the Church, through worship, sacrificial giving, and thankful living. The center of the individual cup trays contains non-alcoholic wine for those who prefer this substitute.
