Itroductio A Experiece That Chaged Me I the early 1990s, durig my first year as director of liturgy ad music at St. Marcellie Parish i Schaumburg, Illiois, I was put i charge of the parish s visit to our sharig parish, Our Lady of Lourdes, i the ier city of Chicago. I reserved two school buses ad prepared the parish choir to sig at a Suday morig Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes. Whe the morig of the visit arrived I was surprised to see the parish s director of Christia iitiatio comig toward oe of the school buses with the catechumes ad cadidates i tow. I wodered aloud whether or ot there would be a dismissal of catechumes at our sharig parish ad just what the director plaed o doig for their sessio. She calmly told me to relax. We boarded the buses ad headed ito the city, through some of the poorest eighborhoods i Chicago. Whe we arrived we discovered that the church s furace was ot fuctioig. It was November ad the temperature hovered i the upper forties. It was quite cold i the old stoe church. Some of the choir members wore their coats beeath their choir robes. We celebrated a woderful Mass ad were later treated to a delicious breakfast i the parish hall. A week later our catechumes ad cadidates aouced that they were startig a coat drive for the childre of Our Lady of Lourdes. Durig the visit they oticed may of the parish s childre i short-sleeve T-shirts. They wodered what would happe whe the bitter Chicago witer weather arrived. They decided, o their ow, ad without the pastoral staff s permissio, that a coat drive was eeded. I order to do this, they eeded to lear how to get a article ito the bulleti about the coat drive. They eeded to lear how to arrage for aoucemets from the pulpit. They eeded to secure a room i the parish ceter to collect ad store the coats. They eeded to schedule times for the drop-offs. We thought ot. The Catechumeate as a Appreticeship This experiece is a illustratio of what this book is all about. This is a book about appreticig people to the Catholic way of life. Appreticeship is ot a ew way of formatio. The Secod Vatica Coucil, i paragraph 14 of its Decree o the Church s Missioary Activity, Ad Getes, put forth the geeratig visio for the way that catechumes should be iitiated. Those who, through the Church, have accepted from God a belief i Christ should be admitted to the catechumeate by liturgical rites. The catechumeate is ot a mere expoudig of doctries ad precepts, but a traiig period for the whole Christia life. It is a appreticeship of appropriate legth, durig which disciples are joied to Christ their Teacher. Therefore, catechumes should be properly istructed i the mystery of salvatio ad i the practice of gospel morality. By sacred rites which are to be held at successive itervals, they should be itroduced ito the life of faith, liturgy, ad love, which God s People lives. This geeratig visio, that the catechumeate is a appreticeship of appropriate legth, durig which disciples are joied to Christ their Teacher has ot, at least i this author s experiece, had its iteded effect o the implemetatio of the Rite of Christia Iitiatio of Adults across the Uited States ad Caada. the words RCIA program reveals that most RCIA programs are made up of a syllabus of topics desiged to cover a rage of Catholic doctrial elemets. I other words, it seems that what the Rite of Christia Iitiatio of Adults has tured ito, i may places, is precisely what the geeratig visio of Ad Getes wared agaist: a mere expoudig of doctries ad precepts. Most parishes celebrate the rites, ad some programs are peppered with a limited amout of apostolic activity ad coectios with the parish commuity. For the majority of iitiatio programs, however, the expoudig of doctries ad precepts remais at the core. Appreticeship to the Christia life appears to be missig. The Rite of Christia Iitiatio of Adults, i paragraph 75, takes up the geeratig visio of Ad Getes ad describes four ways to trai people i the Christia way of life. They have bee described i these geeral terms: catechesis, commuity, liturgy, ad apostolic service. Throughout the Uited States ad Caada, we have become quite good at the first of the four. There are all kids of catechetical programs that assist iitiatio miisters i hadig o the cotet of the Catholic faith. This book is iteded to help iitiatio practitioers implemet more fully the rest of paragraph 75 s four-pillared approach to Christia formatio. The Geeral Directory for Catechesis Paragraph 67 of the Geeral Directory for Catechesis speaks of the fudametal characteristics of iitiatory catechesis i this way: This comprehesive formatio icludes more tha istructio: it is a appreticeship of the etire Christia life. Paragraph 66 of the same documet defies the aim of catechetical activity. The aim of catechetical activity cosists precisely i this: to ecourage a livig, explicit ad fruitful professio of faith (Cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church 1229; Secod Vatica Coucil, Decree o the Pastoral Office of Bishops i the Church, Christus Domius 14). The challege posed to miisters of Christia iitiatio, as well as to all who are ivolved i the Church s catechetical miistry, is this: How do we trasform iitiatio models that focus almost etirely o teachig dogma ad precepts ito models that embrace appreticeship as the key geeratig visio? I other words, how do we move our formatio processes i a directio that more fully ecourages a livig, explicit, ad fruitful professio of faith? The Natioal Directory for Catechesis Paragraph 29.G of the Natioal Directory for Catechesis, published by the Uited States Coferece of Catholic Bishops i 2005, expads o the appreticeship model. I additio, learig by Christia livig is a essetial compoet of catechetical methodology. The active participatio of all the catechized i their Christia formatio fosters learig by doig. As a geeral coditio of Christia life, the faithful actively respod to God s lovig iitiative through prayig; celebratig the sacramets ad the Liturgy; livig the Christia life; fosterig works of charity (meetig the eeds of those who are poor ad vulerable) ad works of justice (workig to address the ijustices that exist i the systemic ad istitutioal orgaizatios of society); ad promotig virtues from the atural law such as liberty, solidarity, justice, peace, ad the protectio of the created order. The participatio of adults i their ow catechetical formatio is essetial, sice they have the fullest capacity to uderstad the truths of the faith ad live the Christia life. The bishops are clear: Learig by doig is at the core of Christia formatio ad catechesis. What a woderful way to embrace the call to catechize others! Ofte dubbed borig or too itellectual, formatio i the Christia way of life is ot at all passive whe it embraces the model of appreticeship. Several years ago while I was workig at a parish i cetral Florida, we ivited our catechumes ad cadidates to prepare ad serve the eveig meal at the Orlado Coalitio for the Homeless. That year oe ma, I ll call him Jack, was oe of our catechumes. He was always ready to aswer questios whe asked. He was gregarious ad would get more reticet catechumes ad cadidates ivolved i our faith coversatios. After we staffed that meal for the poor, Jack became quite sulle ad despodet over the ext weeks. We asked his sposor if Jack had become ill or had received bad ews. The sposor told us that Jack was doig fie ad that he would let us kow what was happeig i due time. At a sessio weeks later, i the middle of a talk o some aspect of Catholic doctrie, Jack raised his had ad said, I eed to say somethig. He wet o, All of you remember the ight we were feedig the poor at the Coalitio for the Homeless. Ad, o doubt, you oticed that I was right o the frot lies. I did t wat to be back i the kitche makig the Sloppy Joes. I did t wat to be o the set-up or tear-dow crew. I wated to be frot ad ceter, actually hadig the food to the people. So there 5

Sice there were hudreds that we were feedig that ight, I kid of got ito a rhythm pickig up the plate, scoopig the mix with the ladle, ploppig the mix oto the bu, servig the plate to the hugry perso. All of a sudde it really dawed o me. This is what my hads were created to do pickig, scoopig, ploppig, ad servig. My hads were created to feed hugry people. Jack the shared with the etire group the fact that for most of his adult life he had struggled with porography. He told us that he could t believe what his hads had actually doe i the past. The Appreticeship Methodology For years catechists have looked to the Suday readigs ad the liturgical year i order to cull from these sources liks to Catholic doctrie. This book does somethig similar. It examies the Suday readigs of the three years that make up our liturgical cycle with a view toward fidig the kid of Christia actio they might ispire. A particular lie from the first readig, resposorial psalm, secod readig, or Gospel forms the basis for ispirig a appreticeship activity. Catechists are ecouraged to use this book as ispiratio for formatio of whatever age group they work with, ad should feel free to adapt the activities i ways that will best suit their ow groups. Learig I the Hole My yougest brother, Jim, whe he was earig the ed of his high school years, decided that he wated to become a electricia. He was hired by a electrical cotractor ad worked may hours per week, at miimum wage, for the cotractor. Jim erolled i classes that met every other Thursday ight to get book kowledge about electrical work. Oe summer while visitig my family i New Eglad, I was awakeed by the early morig rustligs of Jim, who was preparig his luch for his work day. It was about five o clock i the morig. Jim retured home from work at about seve that eveig, completely covered with dirt ad sweat. I gaped at him ad asked him how he had spet his day. He said to me, I a hole. You see, the cotractor I work for has the cotract for a large doughut shop chai i souther New Eglad. Today we spet the day istallig a drive-through kiosk at oe of these shops. We dug a huge hole betwee the shop ad the place where people would order their doughuts ad coffee for pickup at the take-out widow. I spet the day i blisterig heat, i the hole, with my boss showig me how to make the proper coectios. Six moths later I received a phoe call from Jim, who was burstig with the proud ews that he had just received his licese i the mail. He was ow a licesed electricia i the Commowealth of Massachusetts. I share this story because it has so much to do with the way we form people i the Christia way of life. My questio: Where did my brother Jim become a electricia? The aswer: I the hole! Ad he also eeded every other Thursday ight at class to put his practical experiece ito a kid of coversatio with what he was learig i the books. Christia formatio is ot ulike this experiece. A Catechetical Method: Mystagogical Catechesis i the Sessio for Christia Formatio After the appreticeship experiece, the leader may wish to employ the followig method to iitiate a dialogue that addresses the scripture, the appreticeship experiece that flowed out of the scripture, ad related Church teachig. This approach begis with the leader facilitatig a process that helps break the experiece ope for the participats. Oce the scripture is read ad the evet has bee recalled, it is importat that the participats first reflect o the appreticeship activity at the level of their iitial observaces ad reactios. The purpose of this is to get a clear picture of what took place ad their reactio to it so that their later, deeper reflectio will be more fruitful. The followig questios may be helpful. 1. How were you feelig as you prepared for the activity? 2. Describe the locatio of the activity. What struck you about the locatio? Who was preset? Does aythig or ayoe stad out i your mid? 3. What touched you about the experiece? Were there ay surprises? B. Deeper Reflectio This ext level of reflectio probes the experiece more deeply, with a eye toward ucoverig the meaig of the experiece. The leader ecourages the participats to make coectios betwee what occurred ad the issues of faith ad theology that have bee emergig i their Christia formatio. The followig questios may be helpful. 1. Did you sese the presece of God at ay time durig the evet? I what ways? 2. Was your ow faith ourished at ay time durig the activity? Ca you ame ways that your faith was ourished? 3. Was your uderstadig of the Church as the Body of Christ expaded i some way? 4. Ca you describe a way that you experieced the presece of Christ i those aroud you durig the activity? 5. What did you lear about yourself? What did you lear about the other people who were preset? C. Sharig Church Teachig After the participats various reflectios, the leader the begis to catechize by placig related Church teachig i dialogue with the experiece. This may take the form of a presetatio o the related topic. The leader should make it clear that the participats ought to feel free to ask clarifyig questios durig the presetatio. The leader will eed to make cocrete coectios betwee what is beig preseted ad the reflectios of the participats. This is critical to this type of catechesis. The leader will usually fid that catechizig a group of persos who have shared a commo experiece related to the topic will brig much more life to the particular teachig tha would be possible otherwise.
