Salem Lutheran Church 401 S. Lake St. Lake Mills IA 50450 Welcome to the House of the Lord Day of Pentecost May 15, 2016-9:00 a.m. Installation of Rev. Joel Leroy Guttormson GATHERING PRELUDE Sing Praise to God Who Reigns Above Hymntune: Mit Freuden Zart BELLS CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, the fountain of living water, the rock who gave us birth, our light and our salvation. Let us come into the light, the revealing and healing light of God. Silence is kept for reflection. God of grace and glory, you have brought us through the night of sin into the light of Jesus resurrection. Yet our lives are still shadowed by sin. Make us alive in Christ, O God. Make us new as you make all things new. Rescue us from evil and the gloom of sin, renew us in grace, and restore us to living in your holiness, through Jesus Christ, our risen Lord. Rejoice with all creation around God s throne! The light of the risen Christ puts to flight all evil deeds, washes away sin, restores innocence to the fallen, casts out hate, brings peace, and frees you from your sins by his blood. To him be glory and dominion forever and ever! INTRODUCTION Pentecost is a day of promises fulfilled. The promised Spirit of God is poured out. The baptized have become children of God and joint heirs with Christ. By the power of the Spirit we have seen the face of the Father in his only begotten Son and been saved by him. Bless the Lord, O my soul.

GATHERING HYMN O Holy Spirit, Enter In ELW #786 KYRIE GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

PENTECOST CANTICLE Veni Sancte Spiritus ELW #406 The assembly is invited to sing the refrain continuously as the cantor sings the verses. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Come, Holy Spirit, from heaven shine forth; with your glorious light. Veni Sancte Spiritus. Come from the four winds, O Spirit, come, Breath of God; disperse the shadows over us, renew and strengthen your people. Veni Sancte Spititus. PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray, God our creator, the resurrection of your Son offers life to all the peoples of earth. By your Holy Spirit, kindle in us the fire of your love, empowering our lives for service and our tongues for praise, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. WORD FIRST LESSON Acts 2:1-21 Page 123 in the Bible Word of God, Word of Life. Thanks be to God. PSALMODY There s a Church in The Wildwood Jim Tweed SECOND READING Romans 8:14-17 Page 164 in the Bible Gospel: John 14:8-27 The holy gospel according to John the fourteenth chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. 8 Philip said to [Jesus,] Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied. 9 Jesus said to him, Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, Show us the Father? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. 12 Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it. 15 If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. 17 This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. 25 I have said these things to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. The gospel of our Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Word of God, Word of Life. Thanks be to God. SERMON Pastor Steve Brackett

HYMN OF THE DAY Gracious Spirit, Heed Our Pleading ELW #401 AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. INSTALLATION OF PASTOR JOEL GUTTORMSON The assembly stands. The pastor to be installed and a representative of the calling body come before the presiding minister and the assembly. Presiding minister addresses the assembly. Having been authorized by the church to install Rev. Joel Leroy Guttormson, our co-worker in the gospel, as lead pastor of Salem Lutheran Church, I now ask for certification of this call. A representative of the calling body addresses the presiding minister. After prayerful deliberation, we, of Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, have called Joel Guttormson as pastor. I present him and this letter certifying the call. The representative gives the presiding minister the letter certifying that the call has been received and accepted. The representative moves aside, and the assembly is seated. ADDRESS AND QUESTIONS The presiding minister addresses the pastor being installed.

A reading from John: Jesus said, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained. (John 20:21-23) A reading from Matthew: Jesus said, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age. (Matthew 28:18-20) A reading from First Timothy: Set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. Attend to the public reading of scripture, to exhorting, to teaching. Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you through prophecy with the laying on of hands by the council of elders. Put these things into practice, devote yourself to them, so that all may see your progress. Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; continue in these things, for in doing this you will save both yourself and your hearers. (1 Timothy 4:12-16) The presiding minister questions the pastor being installed. Pastor Joel, in the presence of this assembly will you commit yourself to this new trust and responsibility, in the confidence that it comes from God through the call of the church? Response: I will, and I ask God to help me. Will you preach and teach in accordance with the holy scriptures and with the confessions of the Lutheran church? Will you carry out this ministry in harmony with the constitutions of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America? Response: I will, and I ask God to help me. Will you be diligent in your study of the holy scriptures and in your use of the means of grace? Will you love, serve, and pray for God s people, nourish them with the word and sacraments, and lead them by your own example in faithful service and holy living? Response: I will, and I ask God to help me. Will you give faithful witness in the world, that God s love may be known in all that you do? Response: I will, and I ask God to help me. Almighty God, who has given you the will to do these things, graciously give you the strength and compassion to perform them. The assembly responds: The assembly stands. People of God, will you receive Pastor Joel Guttormson as a messenger of Jesus Christ sent to serve all people with the gospel of hope and salvation? Will you regard him as a servant of Christ and a steward of the mysteries of God? We will, and we ask God to help us. Will you pray for him, help and honor him for his work s sake, and in all things strive to live together in the peace and unity of Christ? We will, and we ask God to help us. The presiding minister addresses the pastor being installed. Rev. Joel Guttormson the office of Pastor of Salem Lutheran Church is now committed to you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. BLESSING The newly installed pastor may kneel as the presiding minister proclaims God s blessing. The God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, make you complete in everything good so that you may do God s will, working in you that which is pleasing in God s sight; through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever. The presiding minister escorts the pastor to the place of baptism. A representative of the congregation says: You have been called to be among us to baptize, to teach, and to forgive sins. They proceed to the place of the word. A representative of the congregation says: You have been called to be among us to proclaim the good news. They proceed to the place of the meal. A representative of the congregation says: You have been called to be among us to preside at the Lord s supper. The presiding minister may address the assembly with these or similar words. People of God, I present to you Joel Guttormson, your pastor. Let us welcome him in the name of Christ. The assembly may offer acclamation with applause. ANNOUNCEMENTS

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Rooted in the abundant life and love of Christ Jesus, we pray for the life of the church, the lives of people in need, and the life of all creation. A brief silence. Hear us, O God. Response: Your mercy is great. We deliver all this into your care, O God, trusting in the work of your Holy Spirit to bring all things into the risen life of Christ our Lord. PEACE The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. OFFERING MEAL MUSICAL OFFERING Come Build A Church Senior Choir OFFERING PRAYER Blessed are you, O God, ruler of heaven and earth. Day by day you shower us with blessings. As you have raised us to new life in Christ, give us glad and generous hearts, ready to praise you and to respond to those in need, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. GREAT THANKSGIVING O God most mighty, O God most merciful, O God our rock and our salvation, hear us as we praise, call us to your table, grant us your life. When the earth was a formless void, you formed order and beauty. When Abraham and Sarah were barren, you sent them a child; When the Israelites were enslaved, you led them to freedom. Ruth faced starvation, David fought Goliath, and the psalmists cried out for healing, and full of compassion, you granted the people your life. You entered our sorrows in Jesus our brother. He was born among the poor, he lived under oppression, he wept over the city. With infinite love, he granted the people your life. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering his death, we cry out Celebrating his resurrection, we shout Trusting his presence in every time and place, we plead O God, you are Breath: send your Spirit on this meal. O God, you are Bread: feed us with yourself. O God, you are wine: warm our hearts and make us one. O God, you are Fire: transform us with hope. O God most majestic, O God most motherly, O God our strength and our song, you show us a vision of a tree of life with fruits for all and leaves that heal the nations. Grant us such life, the life of the Father to the Son, the life of the Spirit of our risen Savior, life in you, now and forever. LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. INVITATION TO COMMUNION The table of life is spread before you. Feast on the goodness and mercy of God.
