ORDER OF WORSHIP Sunday, 22 September, 10:30 am www.graceseattle.org

FALL 2013 COLOSSIANS: WALKING IN CHRIST "Redeeming love has been me shall be till I die." William Cowper In Christian life, belonging precedes transformation. To be a Christian means that God loves us in spite our sins, weaknesses, failures. We don't have to change ourselves to become acceptable to God. Through Christ, we are loved, cherished, accepted right now. This is one sweetest most precious things about God. He loves us in midst our mess. But, it is precisely our current experience our sins, wounds, incompleteness that makes Christian life so challenging. When he was on cross, Jesus said, "It is finished." But, his work in our lives is far from finished. We still sin. We still grieve. We still suffer loss. We are still not people we desire to be. Our experiential incompleteness makes us incredibly vulnerable to all kinds spiritual pathologies. We can despair give up on Christian life altogereir in an instant change heart or a slow, meering drift. Or, we can chase one spiritual fad after anor, in a desperate quest for a spiritual novelty or experience that will fill up what is lacking. How can we steer clear se dangers? How do we finish race we have started? This is where Paul's letter to Colossians is a great gift. Paul wrote letter to a church a lot like ours young wellestablished in gospel, yet far from complete. And, in ir journey towards maturity, Paul urges m that way to finish path Christian discipleship is same way y started through faith in Christ. For Colossians, for us, faith in Christ is way forward. Faith in Christ is way home. Let us worship! WORSHIP SERVICES 10:30 am Sundays. Meeting in Volunteer Park Seventhday Adventist church building (1300 E Aloha St). FOR REFLECTION The deepest search in life, it seems to me, thing that in one way or anor is central to all living, is our search for a far. And not just far our flesh or far our lost youth, but an image strength wisdom external to our need superior to our hunger to which belief power our lives can be united. Thomas Wolfe, 20th Century Novelist Don't confront me with failures I had not forgotten m. Jackson Browne, "These Days" We are gared here this Sunday morning to hear this word: By grace you have been saved! Whatever else we do, praying singing, is but an answer to this word spoken to us by God himself. The prophets apostles wrote a strange book, called Bible, for very purpose testifying to this fact before mankind. The Bible alone contains this sentence. We do not read it in Kant or in Schopenhauer, or in any book natural or secular history, certainly not in any novel, but in Bible alone. In order to hear this word we need what is called Church company Christians, human beings called willing to listen toger to Bible through it to word God. This is word God: By grace you have been saved! Karl Barth, in a sermon preached to inmates in prison in Basel, Switzerl, 1955

Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been practice church for thouss years to have portions Bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all God s word. LECTIO SACRA 1 Peter 1:1321 Therefore, preparing your minds for action, being soberminded, set your hope fully on grace that will be brought to you at revelation Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to passions your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, You shall be holy, for I am holy. And if you call on him as Far who judges impartially according to each one's deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout time your exile, knowing that you were ransomed from futile ways inherited from your forefars, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with precious blood Christ, like that a lamb without blemish or spot. He was foreknown before foundation world but was made manifest in last times for sake you who through him are believers in God, who raised him from dead gave him glory, so that your faith hope are in God. The Word Lord! Thanks be to God! Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection worship. INTERLUDE S T A N D I N G CONFESSION OF SIN Make confession to God Lord, let everyone acknowledge with me ir sins against God ir neighbor. Far in heaven, you tell us to come to you naked, yet at times we try to cover ourselves with our own good intentions obedience. You tell us to come to you in our brokenness, yet we ten stay away from you while we try to fix our lives. You tell us to come to you so that you can be merciful, yet re are too many moments when we come to you so that you can be impressed. (Continued on page 3) O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 2

You tell us to come to you trusting in your love, yet we have chosen to remain alo skeptical because we have been suspicious you. Now we freely come back to your feasting table. We ask today that you would convince us your love, Overwhelm us with your grace, And melt our hearts with your mercy. Confession sin happens within context relationship, both with God each or. We confess toger, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy celebrates its abundance in Christ. (You are invited to confess your sins silently.) RECEIVING OF GRACE Adapted from 1 John 2 Through Christ's great victory over sin death, Our sins are forgiven. We have overcome evil one. We know Far who is from beginning. We are strong, word God abides in us. Amen. HYMN OF GOD S LOVE Amazing Grace John Newton 1779 (last stanza author unknown), New Britain 1831 Amazing grace! How sweet sound That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found; Was blind, but now I see. Through many dangers, toils snares, I have already come; Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home. Twas grace that taught heart to fear, And grace fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed. When we ve been re ten thous years, Bright shining as sun, We ve no less days to sing God s praise Than when we d first begun.
