WESTMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Service for the Lord s Day Holy Communion Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time November 5, 2017 GATHERING PRELUDE For All The Saints Arthur Hutchings Sine Nomine Rebecca Groom Te Velde A Solemn Processional: When the Saints go marching in *CALL TO WORSHIP Let us worship God. (Those who are able may stand.) Give thanks to the Lord, for God is good. God s steadfast love endures forever. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. *PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. God of the ages, your saints who lived in faithful service surround your throne and offer you praise and worship both night and day. May we, your saints on earth, join our voices with theirs to proclaim your rule of righteousness and peace, which comes to us through Jesus Christ now and forever. Amen. (The Cross and Bible lead the procession, symbolic of the centrality in worship of Jesus Christ the Living Word, and the Bible the written Word.)

*PROCESSIONAL HYMN 326 SINE NOMINE For All the Saints 2

CALL TO CONFESSION The proof of God s amazing love is this: While we were sinners, Christ died for us. Because we have faith in him, we dare to approach God with confidence. (Romans 5:8; Hebrews 4:16) In faith and penitence, let us confess our sin before God and one another. PRAYER OF CONFESSION Sovereign God, we confess that we have not turned away from sin. We do not try to love our enemies or bless those who curse us. We do not turn the other cheek or give to those in need. Forgive us, God of grace. Open our hearts to your way, so that we might one day share an inheritance among the saints; through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Silent confession) Kyrie (Sung responsively by the choir and congregation) Hal H. Hopson Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. ASSURANCE OF PARDON (The liturgist pours water, which reminds us of our baptism.) Believe the Good News: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven! 3

*The Peace Since God in Christ has forgiven us, let us also forgive one another. The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you. (Please exchange the peace with the words, The peace of Christ be with you. ) *ACT OF PRAISE (Hymn 513) FESTIVAL CANTICLE Refrain: This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Sing with all the people of God, And join in the hymn of all creation. Refrain. CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH (Everyone is asked to sign the Friendship Register, which is located on the center aisle end of each pew.) PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION SCRIPTURE THE WORD Hear the Word of God! Our ears are open. 1 John 3:1-3 (New Testament, page 240 in your pew Bible) The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! 4

Psalm 34 Taste and See Marty Haugen Refrain I will bless the Lord at all times, God s praise ever in my mouth; Glory in the Lord forever, and the lowly will hear and be glad. Refrain. Glory in the Lord with me, let us together extol God s name. I sought the Lord, and God answered me and delivered me from all my fears. Refrain. Look to God that you might be radiant with joy, and your faces free from all shame. The Lord hears the suffering souls, and saves them from all distress. Refrain. Revelation 7:9-17 (New Testament, pages 249-250 in your pew Bible) SERMON Now You Know Donovan Drake (A moment for meditation) *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH We are convinced that the life God wills for each of us is stronger than the death that destroys us. The glory of that life exceeds our imagination, but we know we shall be with Christ. So we treat death as a broken power. Its ultimate defeat is certain. No life ends so tragically that its meaning and value are destroyed. Nothing, not even death, can separate us from the love of God in Jesus Christ our Lord. (From A Declaration of Faith) 5

OFFERING THE EUCHARIST Anthem (8:30 a.m.)the Eternal Gifts of Christ the King The eternal gifts of Christ the King, The Apostles glorious deeds, we sing: And while due hymns of praise we pay, Our thankful hearts cast grief away. Twas thus the yearning faith of saints, Th unconquered hope that never faints, The love of Christ that knows not shame, The prince of this world overcame. In these the Father s glory shone; In these the will of God the Son; In thee exults the Holy Ghost; Through these rejoice the heavenly host. Redeemer, hear us of Thy love, That with this glorious band above, Hereafter, of thine endless grace, Thy servants also may have place. Amen. Anthem (11:00 a.m.) Dixit Dominus (Salisbury Vespers) (Sung in Latin) The Lord said unto my Lord: Sit thou on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool. The Lord shall send the rod of thy power out of Zion: be thou the ruler, even in the midst of thine enemies. In the day of thy power shall the people offer thee free-will offerings with a holy worship: the dew of thy birth is of the womb of the morning. The Lord swore, and will not repent: Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedech. The Lord upon thy right hand: shall wound even kings in the day of his wrath. He shall judge among the heathen; he shall fill the places with the dead bodies: and smite in sunder the heads over diverse countries. Henry G. Ley Bob Chilcott 6

*DOXOLOGY He shall drink of the brook in the way: therefore shall he lift up his head. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below: Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise God, the source of all our gifts! Praise Jesus Christ, whose power uplifts! Praise the Spirit, Holy Spirit! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! *PREPARATION OF THE LORD'S TABLE *INVITATION *GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. LASST UNS ERFREUEN It is truly right and our greatest joy who forever sing to the glory of your name: (The congregation may be seated.) 7

You are holy, O God of majesty...that our lives may proclaim the One crucified and living. Great is the mystery of faith: Gracious God, we will feast with you at your table in glory. Through Christ, with Christ, in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor are yours, almighty God, now and forever. THE LORD S PRAYER (Prayed in unison) BREAKING OF THE BREAD COMMUNION OF THE PEOPLE Music during Communion In Paradisum Daniel-Lesur Anthem (8:30 a.m.) Pie Jesu Andrew Lloyd Webber Pie Jesu Domine, dona eis requiem. Merciful Lord Jesus, grant to them rest. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, dona eis requiem sempiternam. grant them rest everlasting. 8

Anthem (11:00 a.m.) O Bread of Life from Heaven D. A. White O Bread of Life from heaven, To saints and angels given; O Manna from above! The souls that hunger, feed thou, the hearts that seek thee, lead thou, With thy sweet tender love. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION SENDING *HYMN 732 Rejoice in God s Saints LAUDATE DOMINO *BENEDICTION Rejoice in God s saints, today and all days! A world without saints forgets how to praise. Their faith in acquiring the habit of prayer, their depth of adoring, Lord, help us to share. Some march with events to turn them God s way; Some need to withdraw, the better to pray; Some carry the gospel through fire and through flood: Our world is their parish; their purpose is God. Rejoice in those saints, unpraised and unknown, Who bear someone s cross, or shoulder their own; They share our complaining, our comforts, our cares: What patience in caring, what courage, is theirs! Rejoice in God s saints, today and all days! A world without saints forgets how to praise. In loving, in living, they prove it is true: Their way of self-giving, Lord, leads us to you. POSTLUDE Postlude on Sine Nomine Paul Leddington Wright *(Those who are able may stand.) The flowers in the Sanctuary are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Mr. and Mrs. John E. Boynton by their daughter, Mrs. Paul Jackson Viall, Jr. and family. 9
