+GATHERING+ WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS Page 94 In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of + Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Almighty God strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith. Amen. GATHERING HYMN: Blest Be the Tie That Binds #656 GREETING Page 184 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. 2
PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. Creator God, you have made us all one in Christ. There is no distinction between gentile and Jew. There is nothing that can separate us from the love of God in Christ. Unite us, so that we may proclaim your good news, for the sake of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace. Amen. CHORAL ANTHEM The Prayer Grace Senior Choir BAPTISMAL HYMN Baptized in Water #456 (verse 1) HOLY BAPTISM OF ISABELLE ORORORO Page 227 BAPTISMAL HYMN Baptized in Water #456 (verses 2 & 3) +WORD+ GOSPEL READING: Acts 15:1-12 1 Then certain individuals came down from Judea and were teaching the brothers, "Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved." And after Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and debate with them, Paul and Barnabas and some of the others were appointed to go up to Jerusalem to discuss this question with the apostles and the elders. So they were sent on their way by the church, and as they passed through both Phoenicia and Samaria, they reported the conversion of the Gentiles, and brought great joy to all the believers. When they came to Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church and the apostles and the elders, and they reported all that God had done with them. But some believers who belonged to the sect of the Pharisees stood up and said, "It is necessary for them to be circumcised and ordered to keep the law of Moses." The apostles and the elders met together to consider this matter. After there had been much debate, Peter stood up and said to them, "My brothers, you know that in the early days God made a choice among you, that I should be the one through whom the Gentiles would hear the message of the good news and become believers. 3
And God, who knows the human heart, testified to them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as he did to us; and in cleansing their hearts by faith he has made no distinction between them and us. Now therefore why are you putting God to the test by placing on the neck of the disciples a yoke that neither our ancestors nor we have been able to bear? On the contrary, we believe that we will be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, just as they will." The whole assembly kept silence, and listened to Barnabas and Paul as they told of all the signs and wonders that God had done through them among the Gentiles. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. SERMON HYMN OF THE DAY In Christ Called to Baptize #575 (verses 1-4) RECOGNITION OF GRADUATES PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Page 189 Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. DIALOGUE Page 172 The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise... The minister continues, concluding... we praise your name and join their unending hymn: 5
