Page Three St. Mary of the Assumption July 1, 2018 LIFE,MARRIAGE, FAMILY MATTERS Grandparents are Special: Growing in Age, Grace and Wisdom Excerpt by Kathleen Colligan "Over the past century, the life span in the U.S. has increased by 30 years. No longer is retirement a sign of old age or the end of one's productive years. Now people often retire earlier at 55 or 60 and others choose to stay on until they are 80. But those who leave their jobs earlier are not always headed to years of relaxation and travel. Some have become full or part time baby sitters for their grandchildren, and some are working as full-time volunteers. Sr. Mary Rose Marrin, CSJ says ' the great gift of these years is the wisdom hidden in a lifetime of lived experience.' Wisdom is not based on an advanced degree from a major university Wisdom comes from insights and reflection on our lives and those around us. Sharing these insights with others close in age stimulates our own thinking and adds to our memories. All of this is meant to be shared with others within our family and friends but especially with our grandchildren, greatgrandchildren and the younger generation. " Grandparent groups provide an opportunity. If you would like to start a Catholic grandparent group at your parish, please contact Kathleen Colligan via email at kcolligan@syrdio.org. "Recommended Reading for Parents and Grandparents: 'Return' by Brandon Vogt. A book review by Kathleen Colligan: 'this book is an easy read and it's packed with advice including: 'what not say,' ' how to begin the conversation,' and 'how to listen,' and much more." For more information about the book and additional resources for grandparents, visit https:/syracusediocese.org/offices/familyrespectlife/family-life-resources/ or to obtain a copy, call the Family/Respect Life Office 315.472.6754. A big thank you to the people of St. Mary s for giving me the opportunity to work with an amazing staff and the most compassionate volunteers. As I step away from the position in Human Development, I have been both humbled and blessed serving the people of this community. Peace and love, Shelby Siddall Sandwich Making Team We will be making sandwiches for the Catholic Charities Men s Shelter in our Academy cafeteria on Friday, July 27th at 10:00am. Please park in the back parking lot and enter through the double doors of the Academy. Anyone interested in helping can join this team. It is with great sadness that we bid farewell to Shelby and Steve as members of our ministry team. In my short tenure as Pastor of St. Mary, I have been humbled by their dedication to the people of our parish and the celebration of their faith! Please join me in congratulating both Shelby and Steve for their selfless service and example of discipleship to all. Continued prayers and blessings! Father Cliff & The St. Mary s Ministry Team I would like to thank the parishioners and parents of St. Mary's for their great support of Youth Ministry. As a core volunteer and most recently as Coordinator of Youth Ministry, I have been blessed to watch our youth grow and mature in their spiritual life over the past 4 years. I started working with the High School ministry and many of those kids are now college freshman and sophomores. We often think of the youth as the future church leaders, but as Kevin Frank taught me, they are the present. Thank you for many great memories. I cherish them all. Steve Janowski
