THE PATTERN FOR PRAYER (Part 1)

Transcription:

2 nd /3 rd Grade Hallowed Be Thy Name Bible Verse Holy, holy, holy, Lord All-Powerful! The earth is filled with your glory (Isaiah 6:3) Teacher Enrichment This lesson is the fourth in the Teach Us to Pray series which emphasizes the practice of prayer using The Lord s Prayer. Each week will examine a stanza of The Lord s Prayer, what it tells us about God and how it directs our prayer life. Today s lesson explores Hallowed Be Thy Name. The word hallowed means holy, sacred, revered. To say God s name is hallowed is obviously a correct observation, but it is also a call to action. God, and His name, is perfect and holy and set apart from everyone else. As Christians, we must act in a way that keeps His reputation good in the minds of people who don t know Him. We keep God s name holy by speaking it reverently, by not making it a joke or a swear word. We also keep His name holy by living the kind of life He wants us to live. This lesson will teach what it means for God s name to be kept holy in our lives through our words and actions. Children will also explore the many names of God found in the Bible and their meanings. When we consider all of God s names and titles, we begin to appreciate the hallowedness of God and develop a desire to praise His holiness in our prayers. As you prepare for this lesson, think about your own life and how you respect God s reputation; how you hallow His name. Do you think, speak and act in ways that show you love God? If someone looked at your life, what would they think that you thought of God s name? Do your prayers include praises for God s holiness? Before Class Begins Place the Sign In sheet and a pen where parents can see it upon arrival. Place the Joy & Concern cards, Time & Talent cards and pens where students can see them upon arrival.

Check that you have supplies for this lesson: Arrival Activity, Hallowed Be Thy Name Coloring Page Names of God Bingo Cards Names of God Bingo Call-Out Cards Draw Bucket Buttons Place all Names of God Bingo Call-Out Cards in the draw bucket. Place an arrival activity at each place on the table. Welcome SUPPLIES: Sign In sheet, Joy & Concern cards, Time & Talent cards, Attendance chart, stickers, pens, Hallowed Be Thy Name coloring page, crayons Greet each child individually as they arrive. Introduce yourself by name. Help children find or add their name on the attendance chart. Provide each child with a sticker to place in today s column on the attendance chart. Encourage children to complete a Joy or Concern card if they have a particular joy or concern they would like to express. Collect completed Joy & Concern cards. Encourage children to complete a Time or Talent offering card if they gave their time to God or used their talents to serve God or others during the previous week. Children should keep their own completed Time and Talent cards. If children bring monetary offering, they should keep it with them. Direct children to color the Hallowed Be Thy Name coloring page. Encourage conversation among the children and with you! Get to know the children in your classroom by asking about their week including school, activities and families. Introduce new children to each other and encourage friendships. Children s Worship SUPPLIES: Sign In sheet, Joy & Concern cards, Time & Talent cards Arrive at Ruth Hall at 9:20 or 11:05.

Bring the Sign In sheet and completed Joy & Concern cards to Ruth Hall. Hand the Joy & Concern cards to the Children s Worship leader as you arrive. Have children bring their completed Time & Talent cards and any monetary offering. If additional children arrive while in Ruth Hall, have parents complete the Sign In sheet and remind parents that pickup is in Room 105. Encourage children to participate in Children s Worship and provide re-direction if necessary. Assist the Children s Worship leader as needed. At the conclusion of Children s Worship, have children line up and return to Room 105. The Lesson SUPPLIES: Names of God Bingo Cards, Draw Bucket, Bingo Call-Out Cards, buttons SAY: Today we learned that God s name is hallowed or holy. The Bible contains many names for God, each of them defining a characteristic of God. If we look at all these different names, we can understand what God is like. We can understand how amazing God is and WHY He we should treat Him, and His name, as holy. ASK: Can any of you think of a name of God from the Bible? Allow a few students to answer. Examples: teacher, healer, provider, father, etc. SAY: If we look at all these different names, we can understand what God is like. We can understand how amazing God is and WHY He we should treat Him, and His name, as holy. We might have people in our life who have these characteristics; a doctor is a healer, a teacher is a teacher, a parent is a father, but God has ALL of these characteristics! He is amazing and holy. SAY: To help us learn some of the Names of God, we are going to play Bingo, but instead of numbers on the cards, there will be Names of God. While we play, we ll talk about the different names and what they mean. Give each child a Names of God Bingo card. Put a pile of buttons at each table for children to share. Instruct children to cover their Free space which is the name God.

Draw a Call-Out Card from the draw bucket and call it out to the class. Instruct children to cover that space on their card. Bingo is achieved with four in a row vertical, horizontal Teacher Tip or diagonal. As you call out names of God, stop to discuss the ones listed on the Names of God Bingo Discussion Guide: Healer, Teacher, Shepherd, Comforter, Creator, Judge. Feel free to discuss others if time permits and children are engaged. Play additional games of Bingo as time permits. If a child wins Bingo, reward them by having them call out the names during the next round. If two children win at the same time, have one to draw cards from the bucket and one to call out the names. Closing Lead the children in a closing prayer. You may say your own prayer, ask one of the children to say a prayer or use the one below. God, Thank you for being so many things to us Shepherd, Father, Healer, Provider and much more. We praise your holy name! Amen If time remains before parents arrive, encourage children to return to their Hallowed Be Thy Name coloring page if they did not complete it. Also encourage conversation between children and with you. This is another opportunity to build relationships with the children in your classroom

Names of God Bingo Discussion Guide Name Explanation Shepherd A shepherd keeps his sheep safe. God keeps us safe. He protects us from harm and guides us on the right path. If we go astray, God brings us back to the flock. Judge Creator Healer Teacher Comforter God provides rules for us (commandments, etc.) and He judges whether we are following those rules. God created the whole world, including humans. He created earth, sun, moon, oceans, animals and more. An artist may create paintings or sculptures, but God is the most powerful creator of all. God is able to heal our bodies and our hearts. God can heal physical sickness. God can heal our hearts by helping us live good lives and love others. God teaches us right from wrong in the Bible. He provided the Ten Commandments. There are many scriptures that teach us the way God wants us to live. God comforts us when we are hurting physically or emotionally. We can ask God to help us feel better about situations in our lives.
