G M In 1 Samuel, God advises the prophet Samuel not to observe as men see, but as God sees. He tells him to look to the heart. This is the movement of this Sunday s Gospel reading. Beware the scribes, Jesus advises. He points out their public greetings and seats of honor, which stand in sharp contrast to their private greed. For the Jewish people of Jesus day, honor resides at the top. Power and prestige created a high profile back then, as it still does today. After his warning, Jesus turns his disciples attention elsewhere: a poor widow. She, from her poverty, has contributed all she had. While the scribes donated large sums to the temple, they did so from their surplus wealth. This woman, in her faith and devotion, offers her whole livelihood. Jesus invited his disciples to see with God s eyes, to recognize a holy life in people the world overlooks. Here, in the poor, the vulnerable, and the marginalized, God waits hidden. Today s Gospel begs a few questions. What do we see? Whom do we value? Are we impressed by the pomp and circumstance of modern day Pharisees? Do we ignore their selfrighteousness because it looks impressive, even seems somewhat helpful? The point isn t to judge the scribes, of course. God can see their hearts, as well, and those assessments are firmly his responsibility. The point is to turn our eyes from the typically honored to the rarely respected. Are we disinterested in the poverty of the modern day widows? Do we ignore their faith because we forget to look for it? This Sunday, consider the widows in your own life. Who can you see with God s eyes? S, D 16 Our parish s second Journey in Faith event will take place on Sunday, December 16, from 35 PM. The theme for the event is the Advent & Jesus Family Tree, and will feature Barbara Smith as the adult presenter. Children will enjoy their own separate ageappropriate activities related to the Advent & Jesus Family Tree. The members of the Holy Spirit Parish Pastoral Council, Office of Lifelong Faith Formation, and Parish Social Life hope you will join them for this parishwide event! H S P A P V Heavenly Father, King and Lord, You instill in all of Your creation an order and value. You call Your children "very good." We surrender to You the conflicts that tear your family apart. We pray for an end to blindness that places pride, greed, power, and selfishness above human dignity and brotherly love. We pray in gratitude for all of those who have defended peace, virtue, and justice with honor. We pray especially for those who have suffered in mind and body from the ravages of war. Let Your Kingdom come! May Your peace that surpasses all understanding reign in our hearts and in our world. Amen. (Veterans Day, November 11) November: The Month of Remembrance You are invited to enter the names of deceased loved ones into the Books of Remembrance in front of the ambos at both St. Martha and St. Mary Churches. The USCCB will gather for its annual General Assembly, November 1214, in Baltimore, Maryland. All are strongly encouraged to continue to pray in solidarity for this effort of reparation, as the bishops meet in response to recent reports of past abuse. A new letter from Bishop Deeley is available in the narthexes. 2 T P E C of Southern Maine... invites you to its 15th Anniversary Mass on Saturday, November 17th, 4 PM, at St. Martha Church, Kennebunk Reception following Mass

Catholic Schools Week Dear Parishioners of St. Therese of Lisieux, Holy Spirit and St. Matthew s Parishes, As we plan for New England Catholic Schools Week, there is much for us to celebrate. St. Thomas School marks its 46 th anniversary this year. It took great courage and faith to combine three separate Catholic elementary schools into one. Six local businessmen with young families took the risk and provided the financial means necessary to open St. Thomas School with grades 1 6. In the ensuing years, kindergarten was added; later, a PreK program for fouryear olds was established. Three years ago, grades seven and eight were added to the school s program. Currently, 176 students are enrolled. Our Mission Statement states: St. Thomas School serves the parishes of St. Therese of Lisieux, Holy Spirit, and St. Matthew. In partnership with the family, we are dedicated to nurturing the personal development of the whole child. We seek to instill Catholic values, foster self discipline, and promote academic excellence in the spirit of a caring and affirming community. This mission continues because of the support of our parishes, pastors, and benefactors. Your prayers, interest in the school programs, and financial generosity provide the foundation for Catholic education. Our families make sacrifices and provide hundreds of volunteer hours to support projects and fundraisers. The business communities are very generous. Our dedicated faculty and staff provide daily examples of living our faith through prayer and service to others, while challenging our students to use their Godgiven gifts to the highest personal potential. On behalf of the students, families, faculty, and staff of St. Thomas School, thank you for the multitude of ways that you support our school community. If you wish to have your baby baptized, please attend the following class: D 15 9 AM St. Martha Church, Kennebunk To register, please call Diane O Neil at (207) 6465605. We find in Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and in the Prophet Elijah, the models for this way of Gospel living. Mary reminds us to listen to God s Word and to cooperate with His will for the salvation of all people. In Elijah, we are shown an example of prophetic action. We are shown a life spent in service of God, service which finds its source in a profound experience of God through prayer.
