Our classes are taught over several weeks to systematically introduce postures and develop strength and flexibility. Yoga 1: New to yoga? Begin your training with a balanced program of yoga stretches and postures that are accessible to any ability level. Yoga 2: Variations on basic postures are introduced. Breathing exercises, subtler relaxation methods and deeper meditation skills are developed. Yoga 3: Practice new and more challenging postures, building endurance and flexibility. Explore pranayama and breathing exercises to increase energy and focus the mind. Gentle: Yoga offers gentle exercises that can dramatically help those with joint pain or stiffness. Restorative: These sessions will focus on restorative and supported postures an excellent choice for those whose energy is depleted. MAY Meditation on the Chakras with Tracy Saturday, May 3rd, 1-3pm BHUTA SHUDDHI is a specific meditative practice to purify the body and prepare the mind for deeper levels of meditation. We will explore the seven central chakras or energy centers located along the center axis of the body, their seed mantras, and visual representations (yantras) with the goal of stabilizing and enlivening pranic energy. We will learn the method and practice together. Fee: $25 (ID#: S40) A Flavor of India: Cooking Series - part 3 with Shobha Chowdhary Sunday, May 4, 12-3pm Chapati, paratha, puri... In this class, we will be learning all about making traditional Indian breads! Bread is a wonderful accompaniment to any meal and often a meal within itself, especially when stuffed with vegetables and spices. We will learn the differences between varieties of Indian bread, how to chose flour and other ingredients, which type of pan to select, and how to prepare right on the stovetop. Bring your rolling pin and join us! No prior attendance to this cooking series is necessary. Classes will be held at Tracy s house in West Amherst, directions provided at registration. Fee: $40 (ID#: S41) Beginning Meditation with Donna Tuesdays, May 6-27 (4 wks), 7-8:30pm Meditation is the heart of yoga practice: a method for acquiring a clear and tranquil mind. Learn the basics: a comfortable sitting posture, diaphragmatic breathing, relaxation methods, and essential concentration techniques used in the yoga tradition. Discover a new level of peace within yourself. Fee: $45 (ID#: S42) Asana and the Third Chakra: Gaining Access to the Navel Center with Sarah Tuesdays, May 6-27, 5:30-6:30pm (4 wks) Yoga is a multi-dimensional practice. It transforms the body, mind, and the flow of prana, or life force. The third chakra, or navel center, governs the flow of prana that gives rise to strong digestion, courage, indomitable will, and vitality. In this series, learn simple, subtle, and profound practices to add to your current asana routine that will build the foundation to access pranic energy at the navel center. Fee: $40 (ID#: S43) Yoga Nidra with Jan Saturday, May 10, 2-3:30pm Learn the practice of Yoga Nidra (yogic sleep) a method for deep rest and relaxation. Through a series of practices, we will systematically relax the body and mind, and consciously move our awareness toward deep sleep. Discover how to travel from waking to dreaming to deep sleep, and enjoy complete rest in a relatively short period of time. Maintaining your balance is a complex process that uses sensory information to create muscle responses to keep you from falling. In this four week yoga session we will work to improve balance by exploring proper body alignment, strength for balancing and improving concentration. Fee: $40 (ID: S47) Sanskrit Mini Course with Tracy Draksic, MA 3 night intensive: Wed, June 4 - Fri, June 6, 7-9pm As students of yoga and meditation, the sounds of Sanskrit surround us. This mini course will give you the basics to begin unlocking the intrinsic beauty of yoga s sacred language. On the first night, we will look at the sound system and writing system. On the second night, we learn to recite the prayers and mantras of our Tradition. On the third evening, join the year long study group for an Agni Hotra fire ceremony in the H.I. courtyard, weather permitting. This class will prepare you to join the year long group as we begin our second year in September if you wish. This mantra connects us to the teacher within, helping us receive inner guidance and inspiration. Gayatri practice helps us overcome weakness and gain inner strength. Through masterpieces of Indian sculpture and paintings, this first-ever exhibition to examine the visual culture of yoga, explores yoga s goals; its Hindu, as well as Buddhist, Jain and Sufi manifestations; its means of transforming body and consciousness; and its profound philosophical foundations. The fee includes round-trip bus transportation from the Himalayan Institute, museum entry and group tour, and a vegetarian box lunch for the return trip. To ease one s physical comfort throughout the day, optional multi-level hatha classes will be offered at sunrise at the Institute and in Cleveland s Wade Park prior to return.
