BUDDHIST TEXT TRANSLATION SOCIETY 2014 15 Catalog www.buddhisttexts.org 1

NEW RELEASE The Buddhist Text Translation Society The Buddhist Text Translation Society (BTTS) is dedicated to making the principles of the Buddhadharma available to Western readers in a form that can be directly applied to practice. Since 1972, the Society has been publishing English translations of sutras, instructional handbooks on meditation and moral conduct, and biographies. Most of the Society s sutra translations are accompanied by contemporary commentary, based on lectures spoken by Tripitaka Master Hsuan Hua. The accurate and faithful translation of the Buddhist Canon into English and other Western languages is one of the primary objectives of the Dharma Realm Buddhist Association (DRBA), the parent organization of the Buddhist Text Translation Society. Translators, bilingual reviewers, English editors, and bilingual certifiers are anonymous members of BTTS. Master Hua is the founder of DRBA, which is headquartered at the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas, near Ukiah, California, and has 24 branch monasteries in the United States, Canada, Malaysia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Australia. For more information about Dharma Realm Buddhist Association, Dharma Realm Buddhist University, or the Buddhist Text Translation Society, please refer to the following internet web pages: www.drba.org www.drbu.org www.buddhisttexts.org The Sixth Patriarch s Dharma Jewel Platform Sutra The knowledge and vision of the Buddha is just your own mind; there is no other Buddha. Such is the teaching of Master Huineng (638 713), the most important and most revered figure in the Chan (Zen) School of East Asian Buddhism. Huineng left no written record, but his students compiled accounts of his public lectures and one-on-one exchanges, together with the dramatic story of his life. The resulting volume was Liuzu fabao tan jing, The Sixth Patriarch s Dharma Jewel Platform Sutra, sixth because Master Huineng is counted as the sixth generation of patriarchal succession from the first Chan patriarch Bodhidharma. Master Huineng s Platform Sutra is so highly regarded in East Asia that it is called a sutra, a term otherwise reserved for texts originating in India that record the words spoken by the Buddha or Bodhisattvas. In presenting this entirely new English translation of The Sixth Patriarch s Dharma Jewel Platform Sutra, the translators, Professors Heng Sure and Martin Verhoeven of Dharma Realm Buddhist University, have aimed, above all, to express in English Master Huineng s plain-spoken, forthright style. As Professor Verhoeven writes, Readers inclined to see Buddhist writings as abstruse metaphysical treatises will find The Platform Sutra refreshingly artless and spare. Those expecting a sutra to delve into the supernatural and otherworldly will be surprised at how down-to-earth and here-and-now this text is. The Platform Sutra is humanistic to its core. As Huineng says in a verse, 2

The Buddhadharma is right here in the world; there is no awakening apart from this world. The essence of the Sixth Patriarch s philosophy is that all beings have the buddha-nature; all can become Buddha. Full awakening is not a future state or a distant place, but exists right within your own mind, directly and immediately available. The text presents a powerful and resounding vision of unbounded human potential waiting to be fully realized if only we could see it. Bowing to the ground after every three steps, in the manner of early Buddhist pilgrims in China, they slowly made their way north, up the coast, from East Los Angeles, following Pacific Coast Highway through Santa Barbara and Big Sur to San Francisco, across the Golden Gate, then 100 miles further north on the Redwood Highway to Mendocino County and the newly established City of Ten Thousand Buddhas. Going at a pace of a mile of day, they bowed, studied, and wrote letters chronicling their experiences to their teacher, Tripitaka Master Hsuan Hua. Rev. Heng Sure is currently director of the Berkeley Buddhist Monastery and teaches on the staff at the Institute for World Religions. He received a Ph.D. from the Graduate Theological Union. He is a professor at Dharma Realm University. Heng Chau, now known as Martin Verhoeven, graduated with his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin- Madison. He is a professor at the Graduate Theological Union (GTU) and Dharma Realm Buddhist University. Publication date: Oct. 17, 2014. SUTRAS The Śūraṅgama Sūtra A New Translation For more than a thousand years, the Śūraṅgama Sūtra has been held in high regard in the Mahāyāna Buddhist countries of East and Southeast Asia and has been as popular as the Lotus, Heart, and Diamond Sūtras. Its wealth of theoretical and practical instruction in living a spiritual life often made it the first major text studied by newly ordained monks, particularly in the Chan tradition. This Sutra is regarded as a complete and practical manual for spiritual practice that will lead to enlightenment. It provides instruction on understanding one s own Buddha-nature, the potential within every being for becoming a Buddha. The Sutra explains how and why this nature is hidden and how we can uncover it and recognize it as our own true mind. The Sutra also explains why personal integrity and purity of conduct are prerequisites for spiritual awakening. It presents the principles of meditation, and provides guidelines for discerning correct practices from those which deviate into wrong ones. It explains how our own intentional acts, whether physical, verbal, or mental, result in karmic experiences, including rebirths into various levels of being, both human and non-human. At the heart of the Sūtra is the Śūraṅgama Mantra. The Sutra promises that the practice of reciting this mantra, in the context of the other practices taught in the Sutra, can successfully eliminate internal or external obstacles that block the path of spiritual progress. (See also, Shurangama Sutra, page 7.) This translation of the Śūraṅgama Sutra was produced over a period of six years by a committee of Buddhist monastics and experienced lay practitioners led by David Rounds and Dr. Ronald Epstein. Rounds, editor of the journal Religion East & West, holds a B.A. from Harvard and an M.A. in Buddhist studies and translation from Dharma Realm Buddhist University. Epstein, a practicing Buddhist scholar, holds a Ph.D. in Buddhist Studies from the University of California, Berkeley and recently retired from teaching Buddhist studies and world religions at San Francisco State University. isbn 978-0-88139-962-2 2009 554 pp hardcover $30.00 ebook: isbn 978-1-60103-017-7 complimentary REVIEWS This lucid, accessible and reliable translation... will be a precious addition to the bookshelves of not only those interested in Buddhist philosophy but, more importantly, to those who wish to liberate their own hearts and minds for the benefit of themselves and all other living beings. Ajahn Amaro, abbot Amaravati Buddhist Monastery, England A must for anyone interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the Buddhist teaching. Professor Huston Smith, author The World s Religions and Why Religion Matters This eminently readable and clearly annotated English translation constitutes a significant contribution not only to the study but also to the practice of Buddhism in the West. Flower Adornment Sutra An essential guide on the path to awakening Also known as the Avata.msaka Sūtra, in Sanskrit Mahāvaipulya-buddhāvata.msaka-sūtra, in Chinese Da fangguang fo huayan jing / 大方廣佛華嚴經, this immense, multi-volume sutra is yet to be fully translated to English by BTTS. The volumes available include commentary by Tripitaka Master Hsuan Hua that makes the text and its principles come to life by adding explanatory text and background stories. The many chapters of this Sutra reveal the vastness of the Buddha s realization and the bodhisattva s mind, reveal the different stages on the bodhisattva path, and present a cosmos of infinitely interpenetrating realms. Because of its depth and great length (81 scrolls with more than 700,000 Chinese characters), it is traditionally known as the King of Kings among Buddhist scriptures. This true spiritual classic, with its depth of thought and its practical tools for spiritual cultivation, has been the foundation for many Buddhist thinkers and practitioners throughout the ages. It is the basis for the East Asian Huayan 華嚴 ( Japanese: Kegon) school of Buddhist philosophy. (Based on audio recordings of lectures given by Master Hua at Gold Mountain Monastery in San Francisco, Gold Wheel Monastery in Los Angeles, and the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas in Ukiah, California, from 1971 to 1979) When the translation of this Sutra is completed, the entire text and commentary, will comprise 75 to 100 English volumes. According to Chinese interpretation, it was spoken in the last period of Śākyamuni Buddha s life, proclaiming the ultimate principles of the Dharma, which unites all previous teachings into one. With many parables e.g. those of the burning house, the lost son, and the rain the Buddha teaches that all beings can become fully enlightened Buddhas and that this achievement, and not that of becomintg Śrāvakas or Pratyekabuddhas, has always been the ultimate intent of his teaching. This Sutra also includes separate chapters on several important bodhisattvas within the Mahāyāna tradition, such as Avalokiteśvara (Guan shi yin 觀世音 ) and Samantabhadra. All the chapters include extensive commentary by the Tripitaka Master Hsuan Hua, whose lively and highly accessible explanations show this ancient text s meaning as instructions for practice of the spiritual path even in the modern world. Sixteen volumes, containing the entire twenty-eight chapters, are currently available. This Sutra, the heart of the larger Prajna Paramita (Perfection of Wisdom) Sutra (in Sanskrit, Prajñāpāramitā h.rdaya sūtra), describes the transformation of wisdom and experience of the liberation of the bodhisattva of compassion, Avalokiteśvara, through the insight gained from deep meditation into the fundamental emptiness of all phenomena. With commentary by the Tripitaka Master Hsuan Hua, one of the foremost Tripitaka and Chan masters of Chinese Buddhism in the United States. Translated by Ronald Epstein, PhD. The Vajra Prajna Paramita Sutra (also known as the Vajracchedikā or Diamond Sutra) A highly readable translation of the Vajra Prajna Paramita Sutra as transmitted in the Chinese tradition, this brief text summarizes the teachings on emptiness of the Prajñāpāramitā, the perfection of wisdom. In this Sutra, the Buddha teaches his disciple Subhuti the subtle points of Buddhist philosophy on emptiness, the lack of true existence of anything thoughts are illusions; life is a dream. Master Hua enriches the text by providing details and narratives, and he explains how to incorporate the concept of emptiness into our lives. (Based on audio recordings of lectures given by Master Hua at the Buddhist Lecture Hall in San Francisco, 1968) isbn 978-088139-430-6 2003 232pp paperback $12.00 Chinese edition: Jingang bore boluomi jing qianshi / 金剛般若波羅蜜經淺釋 isbn 978-986732-837-3, $12.00 isbn 978-0881399578 2008 208pp paperback $12.00 ebook: isbn 978-1-60103-022-1 $5.00 The Sutra in 42 Sections Chinese edition: Fo shuo sishi er zhang jing qianshi / 佛說四十二章經淺釋 isbn 978-0-88139-288-3 $8.00 The Buddha Speaks of Amitabha Sutra The Sutra in Forty Two Sections is traditionally regarded as the first Buddhist text translated to Chinese and serves as an excellent introduction to the realm of Buddhist canonical writings. It contains short and clear traditional explanations and instructions for those beginning on the Buddhist path. The text s forty-two sections cover a variety of topics, ranging from basic Buddhist terminology, moral instructions, and warnings about the danger of sexual desire to meditators. The commentary by the Tripitaka Master Hsuan Hua further clarifies the text according to the format of traditional explanations and further emphasizes its principles and their relevance for spiritual cultivation in the modern world. (Based on audio recordings of lectures given by Master Hua at Gold Mountain Monastery in San Francisco, 1974) The so-called shorter Amitabha Sutra has been and is a foundation of spirituality for millions of Buddhist believers throughout the ages. The Sutra describes the magnificent Buddhist Pure Land, where conditions are perfect for the practice of the Buddhist path. The Sutra also describes the method for being reborn to that land, namely mindfulness of its Buddha, Amitabha. Tripitaka Master Hsuan Hua s accompanying commentary amplifies the text and explains its 8

main concepts by providing many interesting anecdotes involving the Buddha and his disciples. This volume, combining the Sutra with Master Hua s commentary, succeeds not only in introducing the practice and thought of Pure Land Buddhism, an essential element of Mahayana Buddhism, but effectively presents a lucid introduction the timeless relevance of this practice. (Based on audio recordings of lectures given by Master Hua at the Buddhist Lecture Hall in San Francisco, 1969) isbn 978-0-88139-431-3 2002 224pp paperback $12.00 ebook: isbn 978-1-60103-029-0 $5.00 Chinese edition: Fo shuo amituo jing qianshi / 佛說阿彌陀經淺釋 isbn 978-986732-827-4 $12.00 Sutra of the Past Vows of Earth Store Bodhisattva Although virtually unknown in the West, the Sutra of the Past Vows of Earth Store Bodhisattva has been popularly used for centuries in East Asia in the rituals concerned with death and dying. The Earth Store Sutra records various previous lives of Earth Store (K.sitigarbha) Bodhisattva in which he made vows. The first of these stories relates how the bodhisattva was once the daughter of a Brahmin woman who dies and is consigned to the hells for offenses that she has committed in her lifetime. In an act of filial responsibility and respect, the daughter travels to the hells to rescue her mother from its horrors and subsequently vows to rescue all beings who suffer there. The rich descriptions of the kinds of karmic retribution and punishments that the dead suffer in the hells are reminiscent of the Christian hell in Dante s Inferno. The theme of this Sutra is to offer a model of filial respect and elucidate Earth Store Bodhisattva s determination to use every means and expedient available to fulfill those vows. Where does sickness come from? How can we give meaning to the experience of being sick? And, what methods can we use to heal ourselves? In this Mahayana Sutra, the Buddha tells about another Buddha who lives in the East, the 9

Medicine Master Buddha, who answers these questions. Medicine Master Sutra describes perfect health and healing methods, including visualization, mantras, and contemplation. Ultimately, sickness is traced back to the roots of suffering: ignorance and desire. This translation of the Sutra includes commentary by Tripitaka Master Hsuan Hua, which explains the text, supplying context, and presenting the teaching as an invaluable aspect of Buddhism. (Based on audio recordings of lectures given by Master Hua at Gold Wheel Monastery, Los Angeles in 1983) New translation forthcoming Chinese edition: Yaoshi liuliguang rulai benyuan gongde jing qiansh / 藥師琉璃光如來本願功德經淺釋 isbn 978-0-88139-266-1 GENERAL BUDDHISM/COMMENTARIAL LITERATURE Shastra on the Door to Understanding the Hundred Dharmas An Essential Text of the Yogacara School by Vasubandhu Bodhisattva with commentary by Tripitaka Master Hsuan Hua A central text of the Consciousness-Only (Yogācāra) school of Buddhism in China, this treatise by the Indian scholar-monk Vasubandhu presents a list of 100 dharmas, primary elements of our experience. The list includes elements ranging from the subconscious realms of the mind to the sense organs, and from the material world to the unconditioned. Master Hua s commentary provides examples and explanations of all the elements. Theory and practice merge in his commentary, as he shows how this text is not mere philosophy, but is of invaluable use on the Buddhist path, breaking through confusion and attachment. This short text by Master Xing An (d. 1734) who lived in Hangzhou, provides instructions on the Resolve for Bodhi that fit well into the Chinese cultural context, while staying true to the spirit of 10

Buddhism A to Z compiled by Ronald Epstein, PhD Mahayana Buddhism. Journals & Letters on a Bowing Pilgrimage Eight Volumes This collection of journals and letters was written by two American Buddhist monks, Heng Sure and Heng Chau, during their twoand-a-half year pilgrimage for world peace along the California coast from May 1977 to October 1979. Prostrating themselves on the ground after every three steps, in the manner of early Buddhist pilgrims in China, they made their way slowly from Gold Wheel Monastery just west of downtown Los Angeles, then north along the coast, following Pacific Coast Highway through Santa Barbara and Big Sur, through San Francisco and across the Golden Gate, then continued on, following Redwood Highway, 100 miles further north to the newly established City of Ten Thousand Buddhas in Mendocino County. Traveling at the rate of a mile per day, they bowed, meditated, studied and chronicled their experiences for their teacher, Tripitaka Master Hsuan Hua. These eight volumes contain the daily journals and letters of the monks as they reflect on their journey along the California coast and their spiritual journey of self-transformation. They wrote numerous reflections on passages taken from various sutras, inspirational readings, and literature, as well as people and situations they encountered on their journey. Reverend Heng Sure is currently director of the Berkeley Buddhist Monastery and teaches on the staff at the Institute for World Religions. He received a Ph.D. from the Graduate Theological Union, and is a professor at Dharma Realm Buddhist University. Heng Chau, now known as Martin Verhoeven, graduated with his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is a professor at the Graduate Theological Union (GTU) and Dharma Realm Buddhist University.
