A new Web site, www.foryourvocation.org is being launched by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in conjunction with the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. The Web site has two objectives: to help individuals hear and respond to the call by God to the priesthood or consecrated life, and to educate all Catholics on the importance of encouraging others through prayer and activities to promote vocations. The site offers resources for men and women who may have a vocation to the priesthood or consecrated life, aids for promoting a vocationculture within the home, and tools for educators, youth leaders and vocation directors including prayers, videos, best practices, lesson plans and vocation awareness programs. PASTOR S CORNER Fr. Lou Vallone (Guest Columnist, Fr. Rege Ryan) I don t fish and I haven t played golf for 25 years, so when they printed in the Pittsburgh Catholic last Sunday that Father Ryan is retiring, I hope that you formed a new image of what retirement might mean for me. You see, when a priest in the Diocese of Pittsburgh is blessed to achieve his 70th year of birth, he may ask to be added to the growing list of retired priests. I did make that request and the bishop gave his approval. That approval means the granting of a sufficient pension and the freedom to choose where to live, what to do, how to serve. My option for the foreseeable future is to remain here at St. John of God Parish, continue as the Director at Focus on Renewal and at the Sto-Rox Neighborhood Family Health Center. For these past 35 years I have had the privilege and the pleasure of being a part of the F.O.R. Center which has reached out to serve thousands of neighbors in this part of Allegheny County. The first 18 years (1975-1993) I lived and worked out of St. Francis de Sales Parish and enjoyed being chaplain at Ohio Valley General Hospital. Then the transition to St. John of God Parish occurred and De Sales buildings were sold, I moved all the way over to old St. Mary s Rectory. I continue to live there even as I write this article. Father Lou has extended the hospitality of the parish and has assured me that I may continue to live in and help out at St. John of God Parish for as long as I wish. I will now be retired priest in residence instead of a part-time parochial vicar. continued next column... I have always tried to live and appreciate one day at a time and so beyond the foreseeable future, I would not venture a prediction. When that part of the journey becomes clear, I will be glad to share that next step with you. Thanks for all your loving support over the past 35 years. Let s continue to share that journey day by day into the future. BINGO KITCHEN NEWS If you have some extra time (which we know is very hard to come by these days) between 5:30 PM and 8:00 PM on Wednesdays, we really need help in the Bingo Kitchen. Any amount of time you could help us would be most appreciated. Please call Lil Pelkington at 412-771-4673. RUN FOR NUNS A group of Pittsburgh clergy and seminarians will be running in the Pittsburgh Marathon on May 2 to raise money for several young women who have been accepted into different religious communities.
