Love, Pastor Thompson Our Vision Statement "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because He has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." Luke 4:18 19 (NKJ) It is the vision of Mt. Olive to be a church that is intentional in its efforts to identify and meet the needs of broken, hurt and oppressed people in the greater Glen Allen area through the message and ministry of Jesus Christ.

September is Christian Education Month KINGDOMTIED August 24 November 28 (The pulpit attire is Green) We are in the season of KINGDOMTIDE, the color of KINGDOMTIDE is GREEN. The color GREEN symbolizes growth. The cloths on the Communion table and podium are changed to coincide with each season of the Christian calendar. KING DOMTIDE runs from August 24 until Advent. KINGDOMTIDE is the newest of the seasons, dating no farther back than the late 1930 s. KINGDOMTIDE gives place for due attention to the eternal presence of Christ and His Kingship with the parallel emphasis upon our stewardship. Its emphasis on the kingship of Christ and His kingdom, challenges us in our daily lives and in every area of our existence. General Theme For This Quarter: COVENANT COMMUNITIES The study this quarter focuses on God s covenant as manifested in communities. It highlights persons God chose as covenant leaders, the invitations God offered to enter into community, people s responses to the invitations, and the nature of God s new covenant community. We hope that you will join us as we are focusing on: UNIT #1 LEADERS IN THE COVENANT COMMUNITY The four lessons in this unit look at four people Joshua, Gideon, Ezra, and Nehemiah, who were called to lead the Israelites in living in covenant with God. CLASSES FOR EVERYONE!! CLASSES FROM KINDERGARTEN TO SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL TWO CHOICES FOR ADULTS YOUNG ADULTS AGE 19 AND UP ADULTS ALL AGES WELCOME DAILY BIBLE READINGS THIS WEEK S LESSON: Joshua A Leader for the People Joshua 1:1 11; 16 17 God chose Joshua to succeed Moses as Israel s leader. God s criterion for choosing Joshua was based on Joshua s careful observance of the Law given through Moses. God promised to be with Joshua and encouraged him to be strong, obedient, and courageous. NEXT WEEK S LESSON: (September 13, 2009) Gideon A Deliverer for the People Judges 6:1 3, 7 14 The Israelites were disobedient to God. As punishment, God allowed them to suffer at the hand of the Midianites for seven years. God then called Gideon to deliver the Israelites. Gideon, an ordinary person with feelings of inadequacy, was empowered by God to complete the task. The story of Gideon, the self described weakest member of the weakest family in Israel, demonstrates that God calls and equips ordinary people to bring about extraordinary changes. MONDAY: The Standard of God s Choice 1 Corinthians 1:26 31 TUESDAY : Crying for Help Judges 6:4 10 WEDNESDAY : Seeking Proof of Favor Judges 6:14 24 THURSDAY: Cautious Obedience Judges 6:25 27 FRIDAY: Thinning the Ranks Judges 7:2 8 SATURDAY: Assured for the Task Judges 7:9 15 SUNDAY: Go and Deliver Judges 6:1 3, 7 14 Sermon Highlights: August 30, 2009 Sermon Title: We Can Make A Difference Scriptural Text: Luke 4:16 21 Main Idea: We can make a difference because Jesus does. Be committed to the vision. Points: (1) Know that your individual situation does not have to be perfect (2) Know that your life has purpose (3) Know that making a difference is something that can be done For the full message order a CD of the service from the Media Ministry.

MOBC SEPTEMBER IS CHRISTIAN EDUCATION MONTH! Christian Education Ministry: A Vital Ministry of the Church What is Christian Education Ministry (CEM)?? Christian Education can be defined as programs and events intentionally offered by the church to teach faith to children, youth and adults. It exists for the purpose of enabling persons to become true Christians by supplying the means, knowledge and opportunity inspiration and motivation necessary for Christian growth. The concerns of Christian education evolve around the central concern of the gospel: human fulfillment found only within a meaningful relationship with God. Thus, the concern of Christian education is to bring the gospel to bear upon our lives. We cannot move from weak church membership (Sunday worship only) to working Christian discipleship until the full impact of the gospel of Jesus Christ weighs heavily upon our lives. The primary responsibility of the CEM at Mt. Olive is to plan, implement and evaluate the church s program of Christian education. This ministry has been given responsibility for providing leadership for the total teaching ministry of the church. (The other major ministries are proclamation, worship, fellowship, witness and service.) It is a little known or accepted fact in many churches that the teaching ministry undergirds all of the other ministries of the church. Christian education assists or enables the church to fulfill the Great Commission given by Jesus to the disciples and in turn to the Christian church. (Matt. 28: 19 20) There are some church ministries or programs that clearly belong to the teaching ministry for ongoing nurture and faith development, such as the church school, Bible study, and missions. There are also programs or ministries in which teaching plays a subordinate role. Such ministries have educational components but the primary function are the responsibility of those ministries such as the hospitality, deacons, trustees, finance ministries. In such cases, the education ministry will provide assistance in relationship to the education and teaching dimensions of these and other similar ministries. These ministries would receive assistance with how they may do a more intentional job of contributing to the disciple making process in the church. All teaching should lead to the ultimate objective of producing well rounded Christians who faithfully engage in Christian discipleship. To achieve a quality Christian education ministry, Mt. Olive, the following have been developed for the church: Mission Statement: The mission of the Christian Education at Mt. Olive Baptist Church is to equip the congregation for the holistic ministry that will move persons forward in their spiritual growth. To achieve its mission, the church must bring the Christian message to life through a variety of efforts that will enable persons to daily live holistic lives physically, socially, emotionally, intellectually and spiritually. Goals: 1. To provide learning experiences for persons of all ages that will enable them to grow in their understanding of the gospel and how it relates to their daily living. 2. To equip persons to deal critically and creatively with emerging issues and respond in faith as a growing disciple of Jesus Christ. CHRISTIAN EDUCATION Church Conference Planning Committee Meeting Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at 7:00 pm New Members Welcome! Due to safety requirements, no one is allowed in the building that is being constructed between the hours of 7:00 am and 4:00 pm without contacting the church office. Your cooperation will be greatly appreciated.

Participation is also needed in donations that will help to meet some of the needs of others; to help us as a church family show the love of Jesus. You can donate large cans of string beans, potatoes, toilet paper, and skeins of yarn to make scarves and caps for the winter months. We declare Christ s love with our mouth, but we demonstrate it with our muscles. Effective Christianity means rolling up our sleeves and going to work. In a world that is that is hungry for a little kindness, the Lord has provided His Church, and kindness is our stock in trade. When we roll up our sleeves, we hold our Lord up to a needy world.
