THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST JUNE 18, 2017 TWO PARISHES SHARING ONE PASTOR: CATHOLICS WORKING TOGETHER Beginning on July 1, 2017, Father Steven LaBaire will become Pastor of both Holy Family and Saint Stephen Parishes. The date marks the beginning of a new chapter in the story of two Catholic neighbors on Grafton Hill. What does this mean? 1. Both parishes will remain distinct. Both churches will continue to be maintained. Each parish will have its own office. Separate records and finances will be kept for both parishes. 2. The English Mass schedule will be modified so that Father LaBaire will be able to celebrate all the weekend English Masses at both churches as well as the Sunday French Mass at Saint Joseph s when necessary. The English Mass schedule is: 4:00 Saturday at St. Stephen s. Sundays at 9:30 am at Holy Family and 7:30 am and 11 am at Saint Stephen s. 3. Collaboration that has been initiated over the past year between Saint Stephen s and Holy Family will continue. This includes alternating daily masses between the churches and shared religious education programs. 4. Further collaboration will be initiated so that: ---The same information and news appears in the Sunday bulletins at both churches. --Any offertory envelope from Saint Stephen s placed on the offertory basket at Mass at Holy Family will be directed back to St. Stephen s. And, any envelope from Holy Parish given at St. Stephen s will be directed back to Holy Family. --Some celebrations (e.g. Thanksgiving Day) will be held jointly. TODAY IS THE SOLEMNITY OF THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST Measured by church time, today s feast is quite young. It dates from the middle of the thirteenth century. It has been given many names over the centuries: Feast of the Eucharist, Feast of the Most Precious Sacrament, and Corpus Christi, the Body of Christ. In France it is still commonly called La fete Dieu, meaning the feast of God. People during the middle ages wanted a joyful day to reflect upon and celebrate Christ s gift of the Eucharist. There was also a strong desire among the faithful to see the Blessed Sacrament at a time in church history when many did not receive it at Mass. Processions with the Blessed Sacrament through the streets of villages and cities were held on this day. The Eucharist would be carried by the priest under a canopy followed by parishioners. These processions still take place in Latin America, Europe and within certain ethnic communities in North America. In some places this custom is being revived. This is a hopeful development. Our Brazilian Catholic Community here at Holy Family will participate in this practice with numerous families and children. While processions through the streets may not be part of the observance of many American Catholics on Corpus Christi, this day is certainly outward-looking. The point of the feast day is not simply to enact a procession. More importantly, how do we carry the liturgy, the Mass, into our everyday lives? How are do you bring the presence of Christ into the streets, homes schools, and workplaces of our everyday living? Today we pray that we will become what we eat: the Body of Christ carried and brought into the world. 5. Father Andres Araque is being named parttime associate pastor of Saint Stephen s with a view to establishing a Spanish-speaking there. Deacon Israel Fernandez is being assigned to St. Stephen s as well. 6. Father Adriano Natalino will continue to serve the Brazilian Catholic Community at Holy Family Parish. Deacon Thomas Marshall will continue his ministry at Holy Family. 2017 PARTNERS IN CHARITY APPEAL Envelopes for the Partners in Charity Appeal may be found in the pews of the church. Simply mail the envelope with your gift to the rectory or return by means of the collection basket at Mass during the next few weeks. Please make checks payable to Partners in Charity. Thank you!
