Community Spiritual Director The Board was blessed at the June Board Meeting when Tiki, & Jennifer Dixon, and their grandson joined us. Recently, Amanda Madson had to resign as the Community Spiritual Director due to personal reasons and Tiki was being asked to fill that position. Being the Community Spiritual Director is a big commitment. Our clergy has many tasks within their own church and we are so blessed when they say yes to this added task of serving the Emmaus Community. As Tiki addressed the Board members, he asked us six questions that he uses when he is in a Reunion Group setting. 1. How is your prayer life? 2. What are you studying for your personal growth in God's word? 3. What would you like for the group to pray about (for you) this upcoming week? 4. What was a "victory" in your life during this past week? 5. Whom did you share your witness with this past week? 6. What did you do to "help" someone this past week? In looking at these questions, which are very similar to our Walk To Emmaus Service Card that each one of us receives on the weekend, they highlight the need to examine these six opportunities for our own lives. I want to encourage each person reading this to get into a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly Reunion Group. It will change your life! Get into an accountability group today! Tiki has accepted the Community Spiritual Director position for the Great Smoky Mountain Emmaus Community. Finally, we thank you Tiki for the six reminders that we need to be more aware of for our personal lives. To God be the glory!!! Sandy Hagan, Reunion Group Coordinator. You can use this email address: utfan0010@gmail.com email address to contact me and I will get it to the correct board member to address issues or suggestions.
Team Selection Team Selection News Update from Team Selection Currently the Walk teams for both Walk 106 (Men) and Walk 107 (Women) are being recruited by the leadership teams. Jack and Tom have been working hard and the Team for Walk 106 is almost complete and scheduled to start team meetings the first week of August. Mary Abbott and Suzy Ooten and their support team are just beginning their calls and will start team meetings in September. If you get called to serve, pray about that call and seriously consider being a part of the Walk team and helping this Emmaus community. We need lots of folks to step forward and make that sacrifice. So, just what experience does it take to serve on an Emmaus Walk? Team Selection uses a graded approach for recommending persons to serve in particular positions. This is called the progressive servanthood model. It starts with your attending a Walk and then your attendance and participation at one of the many voluntary Emmaus functions. This includes attending monthly Gatherings, helping serve a meal in the kitchen or dining room for a Walk following yours, assisting with Walk set-up or take-down, assisting with luggage, getting involved with a Reunion or accountability group, and the list goes on with many other opportunities. For a Walk weekend, participation starts with serving as an Assistant Table Leader, as a Music Team assistant, as a Prayer Chapel Team assistant, or as an Agape Team member. To serve as a Table Leader, you must have previously served as an Assistant Table Leader and it is recommended that you be involved with a Reunion or Accountability group. To serve as an Assistant Lay Director, you must have served as a Table Leader and have given a Talk. To be recommended to serve as a Lay Director In-Training, you must have served as an Assistant Lay Director. Walk Lay Directors have served in the Lay Director In-Training position. And, folks called to serve in the Experienced Assistant Lay Director position have previously served as a Walk Lay Director.
Similar progressive service steps are followed for the Music, Prayer Chapel, and Agape Teams. The Agape Team Leader is preferably someone who has served on numerous teams, in and out of the Conference Room, served in Conference Room leadership, and has served at least once on the Agape Team. So, you just came off your Walk. Breath easy! You will NOT get called to be the next Walk Lay Director. But, you will get called to help in some small way that does not take a lot of time or commitment. And when you get called, it is NOT because you are just a name on a list. At Team Selection meetings, we pray over all the names in the Community and ask the Lord s guidance for who is ready and needs to be asked to serve for each particular Walk. That is a powerful calling! And, serving on a Team is a life-changing experience, for both the Pilgrims and yourself. Look forward to seeing you participate in Walk activities! Decolores! Lee Carleston Research Reveals - The Impact of Chrysalis There are so many choices for our youth. How do we compete in gaining their attention in our purpose to show them the possibilities of having a dynamic friendship with God through Christ? We have an opportunity to help our young people grow towards the unique person they were created to be so they can serve Christ in the world. I have personally witnessed the life-altering changes that occur during and after a Chrysalis Flight with the girls I grew to love during the weekend. I was curious if there was any research to back up our claims of the incredible positive impacts and life changes we have seen in our community. I found a dissertation done by Ronnie W. Dunaway as part of his requirements for the Doctor of Ministry degree from Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky. The research is there to support the use of Chrysalis in the spiritual formation of youth. This is the time in their lives that they concretize their value system that will follow them throughout their lives and we have a means to influence that positively. This researcher followed 2 Chrysalis Flights, boys and girls, and interviewed them immediately afterwards, 3 months later, and again 6 months later. Dr. Dunaway noted that in this study youth experienced and maintain changes in (1) their devotional
practices, (2) their way of relating to significant others in their lives, and (3) their lifestyle. Interesting enough, the majority of the youth indicated the Candlelight service as their favorite part. The emotional impact of seeing so many strangers praying for them and loving them made it one of the highlights of the weekend. The love expressed by the team and community scored as the second highest influence. This is me and you. Our next Flight is Labor Day weekend at Central UMC. Please come and support our youth and let them know how much our Father loves them. Candlelight is on Sunday evening. Pray for all our caterpillars, our future butterflies. Pray for who you might sponsor. If you d like someone from Chrysalis to come speak to the youth group at your church, please contact Debbie Pope, debbielevepope@gmail.com.
