The Basilica of Saint John Lateran is the cathedral of Rome. It was built during Constantine's reign and was consecrated by Pope Saint Sylvester I in 324. This feast was later made a universal celebration in honor of the basilica called "the mother and mistress of all churches of Rome and the world" (omnium urbis et orbis ecclesiarum mater et caput) as a sign of love for and union with the See of Saint Peter. Beneath the triumphal arch in the middle of the transept we admire the beautiful Gothic papal altar, which contains a wooden altar where the earliest Popes, from St. Peter to St. Sylvester, supposedly celebrated Mass, and silver busts with remains of the heads of St. Peter and St. Paul. The canopy over the high altar, known to be the last Gothic work executed in Rome, was designed by Giovanni di Stefano in 1367, and surmounted by beautiful frescoes, painted by Barna da Siena in 1369. Thank you to Fr. Lawrence, O.P. for the photo.

The Basilica of St. John Lateran is no ordinary church building; it actually serves as the cathedral of Rome. A cathedral is the official church of the diocese where the bishop's chair resides (the chair being a symbol of his authority over his flock). As you may know, the Pope, in addition to being the supreme and visible head of the Catholic Church, is also the bishop of Rome. Now, many people might assume that St. Peter's would serve as the cathedral of the Holy Father, but that would be incorrect--it's the Basilica of St. John Lateran! This remarkable cathedral was consecrated by Pope Saint Sylvester I all the way back in 324 (this is not a typo--we're really talking about the 4th century!). On the church's main facade is an inscription in Latin proclaiming it "Mother and Head of all Churches of the City and the World." Question: Where in the Catechism does it mention the Pope is also the bishop of Rome? Answer from the Catechism of the Catholic Church (paragraphs 936, 882, 85): 936 The Lord made St. Peter the visible foundation of his Church. He entrusted the keys of the Church to him. The bishop of the Church of Rome, successor to St. Peter, is "head of the college of bishops, the Vicar of Christ and Pastor of the universal Church on earth" (CIC, can. 331). 882 The Pope, Bishop of Rome and Peter's successor, "is the perpetual and visible source and foundation of the unity both of the bishops and of the whole company of the faithful." "For the Roman Pontiff, by reason of his office as Vicar of Christ, and as pastor of the entire Church has full, supreme, and universal power over the whole Church, a power which he can always exercise unhindered." 85 "The task of giving an authentic interpretation of the Word of God, whether in its written form or in the form of Tradition, has been entrusted to the living teaching office of the Church alone. Its authority in this matter is exercised in the name of Jesus Christ." This means that the task of interpretation has been entrusted to the bishops in communion with the successor of Peter, the Bishop of Rome.
