Sure, the rain puts a damper on the kids playing outside and enjoying the summer weather. And rain in Atlanta seems to bring the crazies out on the road making it more difficult to drive. But rain is something that we need. We cannot do without it. It refreshes the earth and makes things grow. It cleanses our air making it easier to breathe. It also reminds me of how soothing the sound of rain on a tin roof sounds. Rain is a very good thing, and I am thankful for it. As I sit here contemplating these things, I am also reminded of something else that is essential to our lives. Something we cannot live without! That something is the Holy Spirit. You see, just as we need rain to provide the water we drink, to make things grow, to refresh our world, and to bring life back to a parched world, so we need the Holy Spirit. What are our churches lacking? What does the world need today? And what do we need in our lives to make us whole and complete? The gift of the Holy Spirit! In John 14:15-17, 25-26 it says, "If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you." Jesus promised us this special gift from God. This gift will be with us forever and teaches about the things of God. He will remind us of the words of Christ and be our strength and guide through all the days of our lives. The Holy Spirit brings life back to us when we grow parched. He clears the air around us when the things of this world choke us. God's Spirit refreshes and renews our spirit daily. It causes us to grow! As we welcome this much needed rain and give thanks for the life it brings, let us also give thanks as well for the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Let us remember that we cannot live without the Holy Spirit! That it is God's gift to us! And if we open our hearts to God and allow the Holy Spirit to work in and through us, we will be refreshed, cleansed and full of life! Yours in Christ, Jimmy
