The Connection Point: ME Series Part 2 Connecting Others With One Another Text: Acts 4:36-37 Cook Baptist Church * August 20, 2017 Encouragement is the antidote to discouragement. The name Barnabas simply means Son of Encouragement. Five ways you can connect others to one another 1. Be committed to giving back! Acts 4:36-37; Galatians 6:2; Acts 3:6 An encourager is a selfless person.. 2. Be committed to befriending others. Acts 9:23-27 The mark of a real encourager: they will champion the underdog! 3. Be committed to being a bridge builder! Acts 11:20-24 Three kinds of church leadership 1. Risk Takers 2. Care Takers 3. Undertakers Bridge Builder is a person who can take the past and link it to the future. They take the old and link it to the new. They take the traditional and tie it to the frontier and say, We can do it! Scripture: Acts 4:36-37 NKJV 36 And Joses, who was also named Barnabas by the apostles (which is translated Son of Encouragement), a Levite of the country of Cyprus, 37 having land, sold it, and brought the money and laid it at the apostles feet. Galatians 6:2 NKJV 2 Bear one another s burdens, and so fulfll the law of Christ. Acts 3:6 NKJV 6 Then Peter said, Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk. Acts 9:23-27 NKJV 23 Now after many days were past, the Jews plotted to kill him. 24 But their plot became known to Saul. And they watched the gates day and night, to kill him. 25 Then the disciples took him by night and let him down through the wall in a large basket. 26 And when Saul had come to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples; but they were all afraid of him, and did not believe that he was a disciple. 27 But Barnabas took him and brought him to the

4. Be committed to developing leaders. Acts 11:25-26 NKJV The disciples were first called Christians at Antioch. Barnabas never wrote a book in the Bible, but he encouraged two people who later did Paul and Mark. 5. Be committed to mending broken relationships. Acts 15:36-40; 2 Timothy 4:11; 2 Corinthians 1:3 For us to encourage others is to be like God. People visit a church because a friend invited them. People stay in a church because they ve made friends there. CBC CONNECT CHALLENGE 1. Greet someone you ve never met. 2. Introduce people to each other. 3. Follow-up with someone you met. 4. And he declared to them how he had seen the Lord on the road, and that He had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus. Acts 11:20-24 20 But some of them were men from Cyprus and Cyrene, who, when they had come to Antioch, spoke to the Hellenists, preaching the Lord Jesus. 21 And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number believed and turned to the Lord. 22 Then news of these things came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent out Barnabas to go as far as Antioch. 23 When he came and had seen the grace of God, he was glad, and encouraged them all that with purpose of heart they should continue with the Lord. 24 For he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a great many people were added to the Lord. Acts 11:25-26 NKJV 25 Then Barnabas departed for Tarsus to seek Saul. 26 And when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch.

So it was that for a whole year they assembled with the church and taught a great many people. And the disciples were frst called Christians in Antioch. Acts 15:36-40 NKJV 36 Then after some days Paul said to Barnabas, Let us now go back and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the word of the Lord, and see how they are doing. 37 Now Barnabas was determined to take with them John called Mark. 38 But Paul insisted that they should not take with them the one who had departed from them in Pamphylia, and had not gone with them to the work. 39 Then the contention became so sharp that they parted from one another. And so Barnabas took Mark and sailed to Cyprus; 40 but Paul chose Silas and departed, being commended by the brethren to the grace of God. 2 Timothy 4:11 NKJV 11 Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for ministry. 2 Corinthians 1:3 NKJV
