St. Joseph Parish Guidelines for Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist 2017/2018 EMEs SHEDULE EME schedules will be provided by email and will be posted on the St. Joseph website (www.stjos.com). Hard copies will be made available in manila folders on the counter in the Ministry room. On the schedule, denotes ody Ministers and (cup) denotes lood Ministers. There are 5 ody Ministers (the priest and 4 Lay ody Ministers). There are 9 lood Ministers. NOTIE: If a deacon is present, the first lood Minister () on the EME list in the Ministers Room does not serve. Or if there are 2 deacons, the first two lood Ministers do not serve. If an extra priest along with the presiding priest is present, then the first ody Minister () on the schedule does not serve. Also, if 2 extra priests are present along with the presiding priest, then the first two ody Ministers would not serve. A deacon wears an Alb with a stole that crosses his chest and falls on the other side to his hip. A priest wears an Alb with his stole around his neck and falls over both shoulders and down in front. ASENE/ RESPONSIILITY FOR SUSTITUTES An email from Gail Assenmacher will be sent to all Liturgical Ministers with instructions to blackout dates you are not available to serve due to prior commitments. The email will be sent out one month in advance of the next schedule. Please find a substitute if you are unable to serve at your scheduled time. When you receive your schedule, please take the time to mark your calendar right away, so that in the event you have a conflict, you have time to arrange for a substitute. all or email someone to sub for you, or to exchange dates with another EME (we will provide a Liturgical Ministers ontact Information list). Notify the Mass aptains of the changes. a. The Mass aptains are listed at the bottom of your schedules. Their contact information will be on the Liturgical Ministers ontact Information. As a last resort, call or email Maggie Hansma at (734) 426-4372 (maggaloots@aol.com) or Denise Muir at (810) 231-3560 (dsmuir@chartermi.net) to assist in getting a substitute. Please DO NOT call or email the Parish Office. ARRIVAL Please arrive at least 15 minutes before Mass. Go to the Ministers Room to check your name off to indicate you are present. This is essential for the Mass aptains. If you are subbing for someone, cross off their name, write in your name, and check it off. APPEARANE All liturgical ministers are asked to show reverence for the celebration of Mass by their attire and by the manner in which they handle the Eucharist. Please dress appropriately when serving as an EME. lean, neat and modest are suggested even when you are not assigned to serve as an EME; you never know when your help will be needed.

APPROAHING THE ALTAR (see attached diagram) Approach the ema after you have made a sign of peace with people around you. e on the ema before the priest returns to the Altar from the Tabernacle with the iborium. A good cue is to approach the Altar promptly as the priest enters the Eucharistic hapel. lood Ministers: line up directly adjacent to the right arm of the presider s chair and scrunch together to allow room for all nine ministers. ody Ministers: Line up at the back of the ema (next to the servers) and across from the first four lood ministers. e sure to leave enough room at the front of the ema for 2-3 musicians who will be receiving the Eucharist on the ema. While on the ema, it is gracious to extend a sign of peace to EMEs who are immediately next to you. We encourage you to then focus your attention on the Eucharist and prepare your hearts to receive our Lord. We discourage giving the sign of peace to multiple individuals as it can be distracting to the congregation and to other EMEs as they prepare to receive the Eucharist. If you realize there are too many ministers on the ema, remain and receive the Eucharist and return to your seat when the EMEs take their stations. ADMINISTERING THE EUHARIST TO THE EMEs AND SERVERS The priest administers the ody and lood of hrist to 1, 2 and 3 lood Ministers (standing closest to presider s chair) and then gives each of them a cup and purificator. Remember to wipe the rim of the cup inside and outside after personally receiving the Precious lood. Next, the priest gives the ody of hrist to the rest of the lood Ministers while 3 lood Minister follows him to administer the lood of hrist to them. 3 lood Minister remains at the front of the ema (nearest the congregation) after administering the lood of hrist to the lood Ministers. 2 follows the priest to serve the lood of hrist to the musicians & ody Ministers. 1 after the priest serves the last Altar Server, 1 will serve the Altar Servers and 1 & 2. After serving, 1 and 2 will stand between the Altar Servers and ody Ministers to wait for the priest s signal to take their stations. Note: Sometimes Fr. will deviate from these plans, so just follow his directions. TAKING OUR STATIONS lood Ministers Think turn around or single file Three nearest the presider s chair Turn around and take the 3 stations marked with a on the Eucharistic hapel side. Four nearest the Steps Walk single file to the four stations marked with a near the center aisle; the first two go to the choir side of the center aisle and the next two go to the Eucharistic hapel side of the center aisle. Two between the Altar Servers and ody Ministers - Walk single file down the steps next to the Ambo to take the two stations marked with a on the hoir side. ody Ministers Think cross or single file Two nearest the Altar Servers (1&2) - ross the ema. 1 goes to the station marked with a nearest the Eucharistic chapel; 2 takes the station with the to the right of Fr. rendan. Two nearest the Ambo Walk single file past the Ambo down the steps to the two stations marked with a (choir side). Important: Stand forward of the to allow for any choir members to walk behind you to return safely to the choir area. ADMINISTERING HOLY OMMUNION Say, The ody of hrist or The lood of hrist.

Do not say, This is the ody or lood of hrist, and do not address the communicant by name or converse with them. Use your purificator to wipe the rim of the cup inside and outside after each person has received the Precious lood. Rotate the cup a quarter turn for the next person. less the children or adults who come forward with their arms crossed over their chests. When blessing them, place your hand on their head or shoulder and say: May God bless you or May God bless you with His peace. Generally, Father rendan and the Ministers on the Eucharistic hapel side finish serving communion before the Ministers on the choir side. o Assist the choir side ody Ministers by positioning yourself next to the front row pews (see the on the floor), and administering the Eucharist to the remaining people in line. o Assist the choir side lood Ministers by taking a vacated lood Minister s position or stand behind a lood Minister who is serving, in anticipation of them emptying their cup. (The ones closest to the Eucharistic hapel should cross the ema to the choir side. The others can assist near the main aisle) When requested by a Mass aptain (usually at the end of the ommunion line) or Fr rendan to bring Eucharist to an immobile parishioner, follow the Mass aptain to their seat and serve the parishioner Holy ommunion. Return to assist other Eucharistic Ministers on the choir side, as needed. When your cup is empty before everyone has received, return to the redence Table and place your cup and purificator on the redence Table. Please do not place the purificators in the cup. If you get low on Eucharist you may need to get additional Eucharist from another Eucharistic Minister. The need to break the hosts is almost never needed, but should be done as a last resort. If you drop the Eucharist or if a parishioner drops it, pick it up reverently and place it in your hand holding the bowl. Please consume it when you are finished distributing ommunion. If the lood of hrist is spilled, please place the purificator on it. (Another purificator is on the Altar for continuing to administer the lood of hrist). After Mass, please wipe the floor and then rinse the purificator over the Sacrarium. WHEN FINISHED GIVING OMMUNION ody Ministers will take their bowls to the Altar for the priest to consolidate the Eucharist into the iborium/owls. Wait for the priest to empty the Eucharist into the iborium and then take the empty bowl to the redence Table, as well as anything else the priest hands to you. lood Ministers go directly to the redence Table. (It is preferred that you walk around the perimeter of the ema to the redence Table rather than cross the ema.) onsume any remaining lood of hrist in the cup and then place the purificator and cup on the redence Table.

Please do not place the purificator inside the cup. If you are not yet 21 years old, ask one of the other ministers to consume the lood of hrist remaining in your cup. In addition to the bowls, the priest s chalice and purificator should be taken to the redence Table. Return to the Altar, if necessary, to ensure these items are taken to the redence Table. After returning the vessels to the redence table, the first four to five ministers should step down to the tiled floor, then the next four to five ministers step down to the first step and so on until all ministers are completely off the ema. This will eliminate the congestion around the redence Table, thus providing a clear path for EMEs to return vessels and for Fr. rendan to approach the Tabernacle. This will also allow the ministers to see Fr. rendan genuflect and close the Tabernacle door, signaling the ministers to return to their seats. You are encouraged to take this time for a personal prayer of thanksgiving for the gift of the Eucharist and to maintain a demeanor of reverence. Greeting or chatting with the other EMEs is discouraged. When returning to your seats, please fold your hands in a prayer position, again reflecting a sincere reverence of the Eucharist. Also, according to GIRM 274 (General Instruction of the Roman Missal), ministers do not genuflect or bow to the tabernacle DURING Mass. AFTER MASS AFTER the final song is completely finished proceed to the redence Table to purify vessels at the table (not in the Sacristy). oth ody and lood Ministers are responsible to wash and dry the vessels after purification. There should be at least 6 ministers to complete this task. upboards are clearly marked where each vessel is to be stored. 5pm and 11am EMEs will put the vessels away in the cupboards. 9am EMEs will place the vessels on the island counter. This is also true between back to back holiday Masses. GUIDELINES FOR PURIFYING THE OWLS AND UPS The important reason for purifying the vessels is to ensure that any remaining lood of hrist and particles of the ody of hrist are consumed prior to washing the bowls and cups. Any vessels that contained the ody or lood of hrist must be purified. The large crystal bowl and large crystal pitcher do not need to be purified. Using a purificator, sweep all fragments from one small bowl to another. Pour some water into the last small bowl. Rotate the bowl so as to capture any remaining particles in the water. Pour the water into one of the cups and then consume. Purification of the bowls is now complete. Pour water into a cup. Rotate the water around in the cup then transfer the same water from one cup to another, and then when you get to the last glass consume the liquid. Purification of the cups is now complete. TAERNALE KEY Hang the Tabernacle key inside the cupboard closest to the refrigerator.
