A PERSONAL WORD SUNDAY, JANUARY 6, 2013 FULL COMMUNION 8:45 & 11:00 AM Sanctuary The 8:45 AM worship service is broadcast via 15-minute delay from 9-10 AM Sundays on WAPI-1070 AM. SERMON Rev. Drew Holland Outside In MUSIC 8:45 & 11:00 AM Sanctuary Choir, Kathryn Fouse, Debby Holmes MINISTER ON CALL Nathan Carden, 863-0765 WESLEY HALL 11:15 AM Rev. Nathan Carden A LOOK AT DECEMBER 24 2,200 Worship Attendance A LOOK AT DECEMBER 30 935 Worship Attendance 587 Sunday School Attendance You may remember the film The Karate Kid. In it, actor Ralph Macchio plays a kid named Daniel, who is bullied at his school. He approaches an elderly Karate Master, by the name of Mr. Miyagi, wanting to learn karate as self defense. Mr. Miyagi puts him to work doing tasks around his house sanding and painting, and waxing his car. He is very particular about the motions he uses as he waxes wax on using a circle with one hand, wax off with opposite circles by the other hand. Daniel does this for hours in the hot sun, over and over again. Finally, Daniel has had enough and he thinks he is being duped. He wants to know when he will learn real karate. Then Mr. Miyagi demonstrates that the motions he has been doing were the primary karate moves he needed to defend himself. Those hours he spent doing the same repetitive motions over and over again were designed so that they would become second nature, something done without thought. Mr. Miyagi was teaching Daniel a habit! Studies indicate that about 40-50% of what we do every day may feel like a decision, but they are actually habits. Habits are important because, as Sean Covey points out in his book The 7 Habits of Effective Teens, We become what we habitually do. Or as Ralph Waldo Emerson puts it, Sow a thought and you reap an action, sow an action and you reap a habit, sow a habit and you reap a character, sow a character and you reap a destiny. In many ways, our lives are shaped by our habits. The habits we form, whether good or bad, define us. Paul recognized this when he wrote to his young companion Timothy, Train yourself to be Godly. It is important that we put into place those life habits which will cause us to grow and to thrive. The best way to break a bad habit is never to start it. As we enter the New Year, my sermon series will focus on Holy Habits. Please join us. information for guests & new members Welcome to Trinity United Methodist Church!
