June 2013 Sivan Tammuz 5773 JGH Home Program The members of the Jewish Congregation of Hamelin extend their heartfelt condolences to the Butte family on the murder of their beloved husband and father and our honorable County Commissioner, Rüdiger Butte. Mr. Butte was a friend of our congregation and one of our most loyal supporters. He was instrumental in opening political doors in our city and county so that we were able to build the Hamelin Synagogue. He was a welcome guest at all of our celebrations, the last, when he presented congregational president Rachel Dohme the German Medal of Merit. He did this, as he did everything, in a quiet manner, only wishing to help the people he was elected to serve. We are speechless, shocked and in deep mourning over this senseless, brutal and cowardly violent act. Our hearts and prayers go out to the Butte family. As all the citizens of Hamelin, we mourn. Dear members, friends and supporters, We hope that summer is finally here. The month of June stands at the door as well as welcomed and honored guests. Once again we received a visit from relatives of former Hamelin Jewish citizens, Ruth Keret s (Hamelin, Israel) daughter and Naomi Bando and her husband visited us. They make their home in Australia. It is gratifying to know that the bond between the Jewish community before the war and our community today still holds strong. Let s review the events in May. It would be easier to list the names of community members who weren t in the May 9th Memorial Day celebration than all those who were! Valerij Bogachick orchestrated the moving memorial service with prayer, reading and song. Certainly his profession as a thespian assisted him in this labor of love. We wish to thank Valerij, Mark, Valeri, Lev, Wladimir, Faina, Larissa, Larissa, Evgenia, Nadja, Dora, Inna und Svetlana. The performances took place in front of pictures and silent film from WWII. Each interpretation was dedicated to remembering those who fought for our freedom. Especially moving was the poem, Babi Yar followed by a haunting rendition of Eli Eli from our choir Shalom. The members of the audience fled momentarily into memories of loved ones and an atmosphere of sadness, gratitude and hope. Together we remember those we knew and those we never knew and are ever thankful for their courage and sacrifice. It is to these people who fought to crush Nazi Germnay that we owe our thanks. Our monument to them is our synagogue and congregation. Our Internet Presence Those of you reading this newsletter in English are reading the Internet version. The newsletter is also available in print form in German and Russian for members and supporters here in Germany. Many hours and many hands and heads go into producing this monthly informational newsletter. Keeping us online is no small expense for our small community of 90 percent Russian-Jewish immigrants. We recognize the importance of this media tool in connecting and informing others of our congregational efforts and developments. And this newsletter has been the 1

most efficient and successful outreach tool in our attempts to network internationally. Many new relationships have been established and built as a result and we are grateful to all involved. If you would care to help us stay online, please contact Rachel Dohme at racheldohme@jghreform.org. We appreciate any and all support. We celebrated the joyous holiday of Shavuot, the Festival of Weeks and receiving the Torah, with our newly ordained rabbi, Adrian Schell. Services were well attended, and we could welcome guests as well as our own members. Rabbi Adrian led a lively and interesting Tikkun Leyl Shavuot discussion about Israel after a happy service of prayer and song. We celebrated the receiving of the Torah with the sweet words of the Law and delicious dishes made from milk and honey. After several hours of Torah Talk and cheesecake, satisfied in mind, spirit and body, we wandered home. By the way, there is an interesting interview with Rabbi Adrian: www.ndr.de/info/podcast4076.html (for German speakers). Netzer Hamelin The youth of our congregation look forward to their monthly gettogethers with youth leader Adrian. The May meeting was fun, and a trip to Hannover is planned in June. Summer Camp The Union of Progressive Jews of Germany s summer camp will be held near Salzburg, Austria this year. Camp dates are July 28 August 11. The twoweek session for 8 18 year-olds costs 380 and includes everything. Adrian and the Madrichim-Team look forward to seeing all the Hamelin kids there and have a super program prepared. We offer each and every child a stipend and the Youth department will gladly assist families in need. Registration forms are available in the office and online at: www.upj-netzer.de. Jüdisches im Juni We invite everyone to attend a meeting discussing our funeral and cemetery practices and rituals on June 20th at 11:30 with Rabbi Yuriy Kadnikov. He will discuss a paper written by our Senior Rabbi Irit Shillor. We want to discuss and explain our traditions and avoid misunderstanding in the event of the death of a loved one. This is an important meeting and we urge all members to attend. In cooperation with the Society of Christians and Jews, we are offering a day trip to Hildesheim on June 12th. The outing will offer a full program spanning both Jewish and Christian history. The Jewish Memorial will be visited as well as the construction site of the Hildesheim Cathedral. A city walking tour is also planned. Information and registration: St. Elisabeth, Hameln, Tel.: 0 51 51 / 2 75 86 or through Mrs. Polina Pelts Tel.: 0 51 51 / 5 62 59. A poster is in our information window in the synagogue. Don t forget to bring a picnic lunch. 2

The interreligious Women s Group has chosen Music in Religion as this year s topic. Part II, Music of the Synagogue, took place in our synagogue on May 7th. We welcomed many for the afternoon program, which included a short introduction to music of the synagogue, underscored with several pieces. We closed with everyone joing in and singing Oseh Shalom and Hinei matovu together certainly a sign of religious tolerance we hope will continue. On June 4 th at 5:00 p.m. the series presents Christian music, and the series will draw to a close with a final concert of all three groups on Sunday, June 23rd in our synagogue. The public is welcome. Our congregation will take part in the Cultural Festival in Emmerthal on June 22. Our choir Shalom will perform as well as a Ukrainian group and our Israeli dance group Chag Sameach. Our congregation strives to do its part to promote dialogue and understanding between cultures and religions in our region. 19th annual Conference of the Union of Progressive Jews of Germany The 19th annual conference of the UPJ will be held July 11 14 in Berlin. Fascinating and informative workshops and seminars will be offered by leaders and teachers from Germany and around the world. We re thrilled that New York Sofer Neil Yerman will attend. Moving services in Hebrew, German and Russian will also be celebrated. We hope many of you will attend. Information is available online at http://www.liberale-juden.de (Jahrestagung 2013). New members Please join us in welcoming new members to our warm and inclusive congregation. The Trieskunov family has joined, and we hope everyone will make this new family feel at home and help them in any way necessary. We welcome our newest member, Charlotte Glanz, born on May 14th! Welcome to the world, Charlotte, and Mazel Tov to your parents, Marie and Yan! Mazel Tov Mazel Tov to the Glanz family on the birth of their first child, Charlotte.
