Celebrating 100 Years November 8, 2018 Dear Parents, As you may or may not be aware, we are required to conduct three lockdown/active shooter drills a year. We have been doing these for a few years and we try to come up with different scenarios to try to prepare the students and have them think about various situations. We have never done a lockdown/active shooter drill in Church and Fr. Mike has expressed an interest in doing this. Therefore, we have decided that after Mass tomorrow, November 9, we will have an active shooter drill. After Mass we will explain to the parishioners and parents what we will be doing. Folks are welcome to stay or leave. Fr. Mike will go back up to the altar and we will pretend we are in the middle of Mass. The shooter will be a police officer that Officer Lally will bring with her. We will refer to the shooter as the bad guy for the younger students. He will NOT have any type of weapon because we don t want the younger students to be scared/nervous. Fr. Mike will yell, Bad guy and point to the back of church where the police officer will walk up the middle aisle. Now, teachers have been trained on what to do by Officer Lally and myself at our faculty meeting last week. They have discussed what to do with their students. Tomorrow, I will briefly explain to the adults/students what to do after Mass before the drill. Students will crouch down and start evacuating the Church. The older students will go in different directions but the younger students will stay with their teacher and stay together as a group. They will go outside and stand on the sidewalk or parking lot. There will be police officers and extra teachers scattered outside around the Church keeping the kids safe when they exit the building so that they don t walk in the street etc. Students that exit the Church on the west side (by the parking lot) will just stand in the parking lot for the purpose of this drill. Now, for a real shooter, students would be crossing the street and getting far enough away so that they have another building in between them and the shooter. (That is what is stressed to get enough away and at least have a building between you and the shooter.) Now, depending on the scenario, the students know that they can go to CVS Pharmacy where they can go in the back room and CVS can lock the door. However, for a shooter in the Church, they would NOT want to go to CVS. They would walk down Overlook or Glenway or Rulison etc. If they exit the Church on the west side, they could walk to Rulison and come around the front of school and then be buzzed into school from the front. They would NOT come into school from the back because there would be a long line to get in the building and the shooter could just shoot out a church window at them. Remember, they want to get a building in between them and the shooter. It is very sad that we have to practice these drills to begin with but our first priority is to keep your children safe and they need to be as prepared as possible in case of an emergency. I ask that you talk to your children about these drills, maybe before and after, and if they have any questions, you can try to answer them and if you don t know the answer, feel free to call me and I will try to answer it. Thank you for cooperation and support in advance. Sharon Willmes St. Teresa of Avila School 1194 Rulison Avenue Cincinnati, Ohio 45238 Phone 513-471-4530 Fax 513-471-1254 www.stteresa.net
