Build a system to pray for the unchurched. You can: 1. Make a prayer list. Use the invite cards to get started. 2. Strategize! Choose to get out of your cocoon and meet people in the neighborhood. 3. Create a map of your apartment building or neighborhood noting the people that are most open to making connections with you. Create a culture of prayer in your church by challenging your leaders to pray for the people on your prayer list. #2: UNDERSTAND THE ENGEL SCALE. The Engel Scale is a tool that represents the journey a person might be on before they become a believer and then what might happen after they become a believer. Christian awareness in our culture has diminished. It used to be most people were just a few steps away from the New birth line on the Engel Scale; today they are much further away. #4 UNDERSTAND THE THREE T s ABOUT THE UNCHURCHED. Research has shown that people are most likely to come to church when they are: under Tension in Transition in Trouble What are the tensions in your community? Exercise: Write the tensions, transitions, and trouble spots you can identify in your community. #5 ADD MORE TESTIMONIES TO YOUR WORSHIP SERVICES. There are a number of ways you can schedule testimonies: a. During a Big Day b. During Worship Services c. Include testimonies when you kick off a series d. Have a service that revolves around testimonies. #6 UTILIZE SPECIAL DAYS TO REACH THE UNCHURCHED Encourage your congregation to invite others to the special days you have on Sunday, like: Mother s Day Utilize the bounce back between Easter and Mother s Day. Encourage the mothers and the families in your congregation to reach out to extended family to invite them to church. Father s Day Consider a Wing Day, Classic Cars Day, or a BBQ to leverage interest in a Father s Day special day. Sometimes Father s Day can be difficult with the amount of broken families. Child Dedications Child dedications usually draw extended family. CAUTION: Don t run the child dedication service so long that it turns people off from ever coming back! Baptisms Most new believers will have a lot of unchurched friends that they may invite to their baptism. #7 SCHEDULE SPECIAL EVANGELISTIC EVENTS REGULARLY. Schedule evangelistic events that are designed to attract people on a non-sunday service. Ø The idea is that they would have a first experience with your church and begin to develop relationships with Christians. 79% of unchurched Americans do not mind when a friend shares their faith. 29% said if they were invited to a worship service, they d be likely to attend. 36% said if they were invited to a community or neighborhood event sponsored by the church, they d be likely to attend. www.churchleaderinsights.com Nelson Searcy 13
Consider creating stepping stones events that you could utilize to give people the first encounter with your church. #8 INCREASE THE NUMBER OF SERVANT EVANGELISM PROJECTS. Servant evangelism is a way for you to go out and serve the community and get people's attention through that act of service and then give them an invite to your church. CONSIDER: 43% of the unchurched said that they would be likely to attend a community service project sponsored by a local Christian church.
