Volume 40/Issue 1 Mission Statement The Hibernian Society of Utah was formed to promote and preserve Irish history, culture and traditions within the State of Utah. We are a nonprofit organization that strives to present a variety of events and activities throughout the year. Upcoming Dates May 15, 2018 Business Meeting July 1, 2018 Ulster Project Picnic July 14, 2018 Irish Open Golf Tournament Fáilte Roimn Nuachtlitir Chumann Hibernian Utah (Welcome to the Hibernian Society of Utah Newsletter) Message from the President It has been sometime since the Hibernian s have had a newsletter & I figured we were long overdue for another one. For many of you that are not able to attend the monthly business meetings, hopefully this will keep you up to date on what is going on with the Society & even get you out to more of our events. If you are interested in submitting content for the newsletter, please feel free to contact me. I d like to first start off by introducing myself, my name is Meghan Gibson, but most people still know me as Meghan Welsh. Most of you know my Dad, the ever-popular, John Welsh who is a founding member of the Hibernian Society. I have only been a member of the Hibernian Society for a few short years. My Dad was having some health problems a few years back which happened to be right before the St. Patrick s Day Parade & I knew that he was worried about getting his responsibilities completed before the parade so I knew I had to lend a hand. Fast forward five years, & here I am as President. The goal for my term as President is to bring back the passion & light-heartedness of the organization that we had so many years ago. To have more social gatherings, to enroll more members who will share in carrying on the legacy of my Dad & the other founding members & to make the Hibernian Society great once again. Meghan Gibson

Hibernians Present Donation to Shriners Children s Hospital On May 10, 2018 Board Members were honored to present a $4,000 check to Shriners Children s Hospital. This year the Parade Committee designated the Hospital as this year s beneficiary of the 2018 St. Patrick s Day Parade. The donation was comprised of a percentage of parade entry fees. These funds will aid the Shriners Hospital in providing quality care to children with neuromusculoskelatal conditions, burn injuries and other special healthcare needs. We look forward to aiding other local non-profits from future parades. Irish Open Golf Tournament The last two years in a row we have had to cancel the golf tournament due to lack of interest. This year, our 2 nd Vice President, Tom Catrow will be chairing the event. We will be adding some new events & opportunities so look for more details regarding the tournament in the coming weeks. If you are interested in volunteering please contact Tom Catrow or Meghan Gibson. Where: Mountain Dell Golf Course Interstate 80 Exit 134 Salt Lake City, Utah 84109 When: Saturday, July 14, 2018 Format: 8:00 a.m. Shotgun Start 4 person Scramble Cost: $90 per golfer Includes cart, tee prizes, contest, & catered lunch Ulster Project Picnic This year we are once again pleased to host the Ulster Project Picnic. We do hope that you ll join us as we help to promote peace, harmony & acceptance. This will mark the 33 rd year of the Ulster Project in Utah. For those not familiar with the Project, Northern Irish teens; six Protestants and six Catholics, are paired with twelve Catholic & Protest Utah teens for the month taking part to break down decades of religious & political division in Northern Ireland. The main course will be provided by the Hibernian Society & we ask those that attend to either bring a salad or dessert.

Where: Murray Park Pavillion #4 296 E. Murray Park Ave. Murray City, UT 84107 When: Sunday, July 1, 2018 12:00pm-4:00pm Monthly Business Meetings In the spirit of getting the lightheartedness & shenanigans back into the Hibernian Society, the Board & members have decided to conduct business on behalf of the Hibernian Society. Board & members will hold monthly meetings via teleconference. If ever there is something that you would like to add to the Board s agenda please contact Meghan Gibson. June 19, 2018 will be the last business meeting at held at Our Lady of Lourdes Social Hall. Our intent will be to hold not only social but educational gatherings for members. Stay tuned for more upcoming summer events. Newsletters with announcements & dates will be emailed monthly as well as on our website. Coming Soon Members will soon have access to all things Hibernian Society thanks to the technology of Dropbox. Links will be provided so that members can now have access to pictures, Hibernian Society Bylaws as well meeting minutes. 149 th Golden Spike Celebration May 10, 2018 marked the 149 th celebration of the ceremonial final spike driven by Leland Stanford to join the rails of the First Transcontinental Railroad across the United States connecting the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads. Our own Kathleen Kaufman was present for this grand event & represented the Hibernian Society. Hibernian member Patrick Jeffrey was also present & is on the Golden Spike historical society.
