P Trusting God's promise of forgiveness, let us confess our sin against God and one another. Eternal God our creator, C in you we live and move and have our being. Look upon us, your children, the work of your hands. Forgive us all our offenses, and cleanse us from proud thoughts and empty desires. By your grace draw us near to you, our refuge and our strength; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. P Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit given to us. In the mercy of almighty God, Christ died for us while we still were sinners; and for his sake, God forgives you all your sins. C Amen HYMN LBW # 242 Let the Whole Creation Cry GREETING P The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C And also with you. 1 PRAYER OF THE DAY P O God our defender, storms rage around and within us and cause us to be afraid. Rescue your people from despair, deliver your sons and daughters from fear, and preserve us in the faith of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. FIRST LESSON: 1 Kings 19:9-18 9 At [Horeb, the mount of God,] [Elijah] came to a cave, and spent the night there. Then the word of the LORD came to him, saying, "What are you doing here, Elijah?" 10 He answered, "I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it 11 away." He said, "Go out and stand on the mountain before the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by." Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the 12 earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer silence. 13 When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. Then there came a voice to him that said, "What are PSALM 85:8-13 8 I will listen to what the LORD God is saying; for you speak peace to your faithful people 2 14 you doing here, Elijah?" He answered, "I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are 15 seeking my life, to take it away." Then the LORD said to him, "Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus; when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael as king 16 over Aram. Also you shall anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king over Israel; and you shall anoint Elisha son of Shaphat of Abelmeholah as prophet in your place. 17 Whoever escapes from the sword of Hazael, Jehu shall kill; and whoever escapes from the sword of Jehu, Elisha 18 shall kill. Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him." A C The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God.

and to those who turn their hearts to you. Truly, your salvation is very near to those who fear you, that your glory may dwell in our land. Steadfast love and faithfulness have met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other. Faithfulness shall spring up from the earth, and righteousness shall look down from heaven. The LORD will indeed grant prosperity, and our land will yield its increase. Righteousness shall go be- fore the LORD and shall prepare for God a pathway. 9 10 11 12 13 SECOND LESSON: Romans 10:5-15 5 Moses writes concerning the righteousness that comes from the law, that "the person who does these things will live by them." 6 But the righteousness that comes from faith says, "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will ascend into heaven?'" (that is, to bring Christ 7 down) or 'Who will descend into the abyss?' (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? "The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart" (that is, 9 the word of faith that we proclaim); because if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth 11 and so is saved. The scripture says, "No GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Proclaim the Gospel far and wide; The triumphs of the cross record; The name of Christ be glorified; Let ev ry people call him Lord! 3 one who believes in him will be put to 12 shame." For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all 13 and is generous to all who call on him. For, "Everyone who calls on the name of the 14 Lord shall be saved." But how are they to call on one in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in one of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone to proclaim him? 15 And how are they to proclaim him unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!" A C The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God. * GOSPEL: Matthew 14:22-33 (please stand as you are able) 22 [Jesus] made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side [of the Sea of Galilee,] while he dismissed the 23 crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he 24 was there alone, but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the 25 land, for the wind was against them. And early in the morning he came walking 26 toward them on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, "It is a ghost!" And him, "Lord, if it is you, command me to 29 come to you on the water." He said, "Come." So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came 30 toward Jesus. But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save 31 me!" Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, "You 32 of little faith, why did you doubt?" When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33 And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God." 27 they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, "Take heart, P The Gospel of the Lord. 28 it is I; do not be afraid." Peter answered C Thanks be to God. CHILDREN S SERMON HYMN LBW # 518 SERMON Beautiful Savior HYMN WOV # 746 Day by Day (you may remain seated) * NICENE CREED (please stand as you are able) C We believe in one God, the Father, were made. For us and for our salvation the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into 4

heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen THE PRAYERS (you may be seated) A Generous, compassionate God, we gather before you to pray for the church, the world, and all in need. A brief silence. A O God our ruler, continue to send out your church on earth to be light and salt to the world. Keep giving us the heart to do your work. Lord, in your mercy, A O God our creator, you quiet the seas and silence the wind. Restore your creation to the perfection and beauty you spoke into being. Lord, in your mercy, A O God our redeemer, inspire leaders with the righteousness that comes from faith, so that your justice thrives throughout the world. Lord, in your mercy, A O God our encourager, empower this assembly to boldly proclaim and live out your love to all who long to hear a word of hope and kindness. Equip us to use our hands, feet, voices, and minds to share the bounty you have given us. Lord, in your mercy, A O God our savior, we rejoice in the example of the saints who have gone before us until we join them around your throne. Lord, in your mercy, Here other intercessions may be offered. P O God our sustainer, comfort those who are lonely, fearful, or burdened by doubt. Give meaningful work to those who seek employment. Walk with those who are grieving or ill, and with all who face the last days of their lives (especially). Lord, in your mercy, P Into your hands we place all our prayers, spoken and unspoken, trusting in the mercy of Christ Jesus. C Amen 5 * PEACE P The peace of the Lord be with you always. C And also with you. TITHES & OFFERINGS Home (The Arms of God) -Seth Tonjes (words on p 11) OFFERTORY (you may remain seated) Lord, bless the gifts our hands have brought; Lord, bless the work our hearts have planned. Ours is the faith, the will, the thought; The rest, O God, is in your hand. OFFERING PRAYER A Merciful God, you open wide your hand and satisfy the need of every living thing. You have set this feast before us. Open our hands to receive it. Open our hearts to embrace it. Open our lives to live it. We pray this through Christ our Lord. WORDS OF INSTITUTION * LORD S PRAYER (please stand as you are able) P Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray: C Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen HOLY COMMUNION Praise Hymn -Seth Tonjes BLESSING P The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in his grace. C Amen 6
