Sixteenth Sunday in July 22, 2018 The Bane and the Blessed I was just beyond Nelson, WI. I was going to meet friends for lunch in Pepin. It was a beautiful summer day and I was in no hurry. On the highway there was a squirrel that had been run over. But it was not dead. Barely alive, but not yet willing to give up life. I was careful to straddle it as I drove over it intending to move on. But then I didn t. Should I go back and finish the job with my car? Perhaps just kick the squirrel to the ditch, out of sight and out of mind? Maybe just continue the journey. After all it was only another squirrel. Many years ago I watched two young guys fish. They talked to one another in Spanish for a while, and then English. One of the guys caught a fish but was having trouble getting the hook removed. His friend told him, Be careful. He is one of us. That stranger s words came back to me that day on the highway. Be careful. He is one of us. A dying squirrel is one of us, really? I feel good and bad about what I did to that squirrel that afternoon. But I think the Lord is glad that I felt something. The Lord be with you. Father John Parr

SUMMER PRAYER Father, Creator of all, thank You for summer! Thank you for the warmth of the sun and the increased daylight. Thank You for the beauty I see all around me and for the opportunity to be outside and enjoy Your creation. Thank You for the increased time I have to be with my friends and family and for the more casual pace of the summer season. Draw me closer to You this summer. Teach me how I can pray no matter where I am or what I am doing. Warm my soul with the awareness of Your presence and light my path with Your Word and Counsel. As I enjoy Your creation, create in me a pure hunger and a thirst for You. Amen. (Ignatian Prayer) SEAS STEWARDSHIP Resolutions for Stewards I resolve to trust God more, believing that in God s wisdom and abundance God will give me all that I need. I resolve to spend more time with God, giving a few more minutes of each day to prayer, worship, and spiritual reading. I resolve to find more ways to share my unique skills and talents so that my special strengths will make a difference in this world. I resolve to give a share of my treasure to God s work here on earth, making sure I am generously returning to God what God has given to me. Happy Summer! The letter, prophetic in many ways, is available on the website for the Diocese of La Crosse. Blessed Pope Paul writes: Married love is above all human, a compound of sense and spirit. It is not then, merely a question of natural instinct or emotional drive. It is also, and above all, an act of the free will whose trust is such that it is meant not only to survive the joys and sorrows of daily life but also to grow, so that husband and wife become in a way one heart and one soul, and together attain their human fulfillment. (#9) Asking the intercession of Blessed Paul VI, we pray: God our Father, fill all married couples with your love. Give them the grace to love one another every day, living out their vow to love in good times and bad. Help them to imitate your freely given, sacrificial love, that they may choose each day to give of themselves, reflecting your love for us when you sent your Son to die for our sins. We as this though the intercession of Blessed Pope Paul VI, and in the name of Christ our Lord. Amen.
