Awards Evening 23rd October 2018

Diocese of Broken Bay Bishop s Religious Visual Art Prize 2018 Sweeter than Honey The Bishop s Religious Visual Art Prize started in 2013 and is open to all school students up to and including Year 10 from Catholic schools in the Diocese of Broken Bay. The artworks were judged by a panel of three judges: Mervyn Soares - a graphic designer and illustrator Jenny Langford - former Education Officer, Diocese of Parramatta Jillian Young - a secondary art teacher, Mackillop Catholic College, Warnervale In 2018, students are invited to prayerfully select and reflect on a favourite verse of Scripture from the Old or New Testament and to decorate and or illustrate it using a traditional or contemporary form of illumination.

Primary Artworks Early Stage 1 to Stage 3

1st Prize - Early Stage 1 Oscar Chen Holy Family Catholic School, Lindfield Emotion portrayed trough the image Great colour to indicate Joseph Student understood Joseph s brothers were feeling unloved Joseph the Dreamer - Genesis 37 ERV I chose to draw this picture because Joseph s Brothers think that their dad loves him more than them. One brother is very jealous of him and one brother is a bit sad because he doesn t really want to throw Joseph into the well. Joseph is in the middle Honourable Mention - Early Stage 1 Alva Carolus St John the Baptist Catholic School, Freshwater Good use of colour to express the sentiment of believing in God Jonah and the Whale - Book of Jonah I like the big whale. I like that Jonah believes in God Honourable Mention - Early Stage 1 Marley Hook Maria Regina Catholic School, Avalon Good spatial awareness Complimentary colours Thoughtful colour scheme Showed animals running into the ark Noah s Ark Gen: 6-9 God was happy! He painted the world s first rainbow as a promise that he would never send a flood again. When the rain came, it made the earth wet. God made a flood to get rid of the bad people. I drew lots of animals running onto the Ark.

Honourable Mention - Early Stage 1 Yvette Munro St Joseph s Catholic School, Narrabeen Use of adornment to enhance the image Emotion of Noah is portrayed with a smile Genesis 6-9 Noah s Ark I wanted to decorate it like this because I wanted the sea to be shiny. I like sparkles because they make pictures look beautiful The animals are watching the sky shine Noah is happy Honourable Mention - Early Stage 1 Nellie Payne St Joseph s Catholic School, Narrabeen Good use of colour Bejewelled dolphins look very pleased with themselves! Artist recognised Noah s Ark story from Old Testament Genesis 6-9 Noah s Ark I made jewelled dolphins, a boat and a rainbow from Noah s Ark story.

1st Prize - Stage 1 Evie Murphy St Rose Catholic School, Collaroy Plateau Jesus is centred in a halo of light Used water colour in light tones with a realistic colour scheme Emotional connection to Jesus and the scripture story is clear Let the children come to me Mark 10:14 In my picture Jesus is reading the bible to the children. Jesus loved being with children Honourable Mention - Stage 1 Mabel Boland St Rose Catholic School, Collaroy Plateau The artwork depict the presence of Jesus in the everyday life of the child. Movement was sown within play. Where two or more are gathered I am there Matthew 18:140-20 I think that means that when we pray or celebrate together Jesus is there One day at school when we were playing soccer my friend Thomas was being goalie. Then someone kicked the ball and it hit him in the nose. He had a nose bleed, I know Jesus was there because everyone went over to see if he was ok and Dakota and I took him to the office. This shows Jesus is there whenever we need him not just when we are in church Honourable Mention - Stage 1 Isabelle Tsai Our Lady of Dolours Catholic School, Chatswood Narrative picture depicting the feeding of five thousand. The storyboard depicts the progression of the story I drew the three parts because I like to think the story has three parts. The first part is him telling stories, the second blessing the food and third collecting the leftovers. You can see the crowds, island and boats. I think he has blond hair. I used watercolour to paint my picture

Honourable Mention - Stage 1 Stella Turner Holy Family Catholic School, Lindfield Picture used water and oil pastel showing Jesus in our lives using colourful rays of light Matthew 18:20 - For where two or three are gathered in my name. I am there among them. The passage tells us that when we pray together Jesus is with us. I drew him with a cross to show that Jesus has died and risen. In the front of my picture there are people praying and above them I have drawn Jesus who is with them as they pray together. I coloured the main parts of my picture in pastels and then painted the background with watercolours. I chose bright colours for the background and mixed them together. I used happy colours because it makes me happy that Jesus is listening to us when we pray together Honourable Mention - Stage 1 Caleb Tan St Agatha s Catholic School, Pennant Hills Stylised work Great use of colour to tell the story of Jesus feeding the five thousand in a creative way Loaves and Fishes A boy giving up what he had to Jesus to share with others and Jesus feeding everyone

1st Prize - Stage 2 Eloise Taylor St Mary s Catholic School, Manly The last Supper was depicted in great detail. The message of the text was central to the piece Colours complimented the piece The perspective of the disciples were well represented by showing the back and front of those seated Drew on the traditions of illuminated manuscript in the piece The Last Supper (Luke 22: 7-10) I drew a table with the 12 disciples because of the bible story the Lord s Supper from Luke 22:7-12 The story means something to me because Jesus is about to get crucified and die on the cross, for me my family and pretty much everyone on Earth right now We have just received our First Holy Communion and were learning about it in class whilst receiving it I drew a cross to show Jesus and God, I drew hand on the cross to show Jesus will always be with you even in hard times. I drew bread and wine to represent the bible story The Last Supper Honourable Mention - Stage 2 Charlotte Ellett St Philip Neri Catholic School, Northbridge Well designed and colourful response to the text of the passage Corinthians 13:4 I chose this verse because I like how it explains Love. When it says Love is patient means when you are patient you are Loving. Love is kind means you are kind when you are loving For my background, I chose the beach with a rainbow pattern as the sky I chose this because it is a beautiful way to express love in significant colours. I chose a wonderful pattern of colours so it is unique and fresh My artwork made me feel happy and safe inside Honourable Mention - Stage 2 Amelia Gleeson St Rose Catholic School, Collaroy Plateau Joyous representation of God using detail and variety God looked at what he had done and it was good (Genesis 1:12) I choose this passage because it symbolises God s creation and how the world was created by God I drew the sun and the moon because it represents when God created them, I drew animals representing when God created all kinds of animals. I chose to draw God looking down at earth because he was proud of what he had done This passage reminds me of my bedroom, the place where all my imagination begins. I m happy that I chose this passage, I think it suits me!

Honourable Mention - Stage 2 Ashlee Grace St Rose Catholic School, Collaroy Plateau Strong design piece using strong colours to highlight the message of the text Simplicity of presentation enhanced the work The Lord is my strength and my shield (Psalm 28:7) I chose this passage from the bible because it reminds me, that God will protect me in everything I do The yellow is God because he gives me strength wherever I go and whatever I do The blue is hope that someday there will be peace throughout countries of the world

1st Prize - Stage 3 Alexea Mullan St Mary s Catholic School, Manly Highly accomplished technical skill Well balanced creative ensemble which accurately reflects the chosen passage The Sacred Hive In my artwork the dove represents the Holy Spirit and Peace, the H standing for honey (hence the psalm Your Words, O Lord are sweeter than Honey. ) The man with his eyes closed at the top represents Jesus. His eyes are closed because its like he s singing out rings of sweet lullaby, Psalm 119. These words to me, mean that you get nowhere with orders or commands, only if you speak kindly and say the truth will people listen to you and help you It s kind of like we are the worker bees, and God is the queen bee. Or we are bees, and God is the hive keeper, while we supply him with honey, the honey being our faith towards him. I called it the Sacred Hive because it reminded me of The Peaceful Kingdom in Isaiah 11.6-7. Only kindness and peace are welcomed in such place. This is how the words reflect on my life Honourable Mention - Stage 3 Hanah Bayldon Prouille Catholic School, Wahroonga Clear and concise visual presentation Stained glass effect worked well to support the message Biblical Reference: Luke 11:34-36 I think this Scripture Passage means that our eyes are like windows - in that they show us what s good in us. They also represent the moments when you see good things that happen and you know that you can also demonstrate those good qualities that are shown to you. The eyes allow others to follow you through the light of Jesus. When I found the Scripture, I thought I wanted to include a part where light shines through. I decided to create the stained glass window effect, so that when you hold it up to the light, it shines though. I added a flame to the I, because when its dark and you light a candle - it brightens up the room. The sun can be seen every day, which is a symbol of happiness (when there s no sun - you feel down). Flowers need light to bloom, which is why I ve chosen to decorate some of the letters in this way. The red colour is directy linked to the flame and represents love and warmth Honourable Mention - Stage 3 Jonathan McCann MacKillop Catholic College, Warnervale Clear technique enhances the presentation Colour palette chosen enhances the visual effect My reference was Isaiah 41:10. The meaning of the biblical verse is to never fear, God will always be with you and he will help you through your journey. I decorated my artwork like this because fear is all black but not to fear would be bright, sparkly and shiny and the art itself is a flower and flowers normally mean hope and strength.

Honourable Mention - Stage 3 Isabel Kirby St Kieran s Catholic School, Manly Vale Restricted colour palette adds to the artworks appeal Decorative text contributes to the illuminated manuscript I chose this passage due to its strong message to us as Christians, God is saying that even if you feel afraid and alone he is always with you and how you are never alone and someone else is walking with you through the dark. I can relate to this message in a sense that I have felt alone and afraid before and thought that no one was with me but this passage makes me feel that someone is always there if I can see them or not. Honourable Mention - Stage 3 Kai Vissers St Mary s Catholic School, Manly Appealing presentation using great detail to enhance the work The image and use of strong colours support the theme of the message Risen from the Dead - From deep in the world of the dead, I begged for your help, and you answered my prayer. Jonah 2:2. I was inspired by this Bible passage because when I went to visit Whale Sharks at Ningaloo Reef in Western Australian, I felt that it was horrible that humans had to kill these beautiful animals just for their fins. When people started to protect the whale sharks, they increased in numbers, like what happened in my Bible passage when it said I begged for your help and you answered my prayer. We are called by God to protect those amazing animals and help look after our astonishing and unique earth created by God Himself. For my artwork I used watercolours, gold paint and coloured pencils.

Secondary Artworks Stages 4 to 5

1st Prize - Stage 4 Caitlyn McNally Mercy Catholic College, Chatswood Technique and sensitive skill in watercolour Sophisticated composition and layout of text Simple representation of water being a representation of the student and God saving me God s power to save Mark 4:41. I chose this bible verse, as I believe it perfectly captures the moment when we realise how powerful God and Jesus are, but that they use their influence to benefit our own lives in a positive way. I also think that the verse is conveying how we must have a strong faith in God. The passage that the verse originated portrays how the disciples did not have enough faith in Jesus to believe he would save them from the storm, but in the end they are in awe at his actions to still the storm completely Whilst creating this artwork I had the idea that the waves represented the problems and rough moments in our lives that we feel can often swamp us. The boat is supposed to represent us as followers of God taking a journey through hardships but with Jesus and God by our side. Blue is quite dominant colour because it displays the values of trust, faith and loyalty. The life saving ring shows God Saves us Honourable Mention - Stage 4 Arleia Vidgen Mercy Catholic College, Chatswood God is represented by the vine Artistically represented with detail to smaller parts of the overall composition John 15:1 - The Vine and the Branches I chose this bible verse for my illuminated text because it stood out to me. It had a lot of creative potential stored in it, and lots of opportunities to express Jesus message. It also interests me as it was an extended metaphor. The bible passage helped me understand the bible, and gave me an insight into the true poetic techniques used. It is a beautiful piece of writing, and whenever I read it I want to be the vine, as being taken care of by the gardener, and to be the support for the branches. I illustrated this artwork the way I did, as the passage, John 15:1, I am the true vine and my father is the gardner because it is about life, and fertility and gardens. I made sure to illustrate what you would find in a garden, such as a butterfly and the robin and made sure to make it look peaceful and calm. Honourable Mention - Stage 4 Sienna Wilson Stella Maris College, Manly Detailed nature of creation that has been represented in the image Illuminated text like inspiration Connection between image and the text Bible Ref: John 1:3 This verse means to me the amazing wonder of God and all his creations, from the dainty flowers to mighty storms, he made it all and is in every thing. I decided to illustrate the delicate beautiful flowers and insects in the small things in our world which we should never take for granted.

1st Prize - Stage 5 Melanie Rose MacKillop Catholic College, Warnervale Scripture verses well represented by the image both deeply connected. Personification of the scripture and its visual translation Isaiah 61:3 I chose this bible passage because its inspiring people to see the beauty in any situation The rose growing from the ashes symbolises beauty showing after a tough situation Honourable Mention - Stage 5 Samuel Ippolito MacKillop Catholic College, Warnervale Accomplished skill in illustration with strong attention to detail. Action is well represented in the armour of the knight. 1 Corinthians 16:3 This verse comes from 1 Corinthians which was written by Paul. The verse is a part of Paul s conclusion of the book where Paul tells the readers to go and be courageous and strong with a new firm sense of faith I decorated this verse like I did because medieval knights are associated with being strong, courageous and stand their guard. I drew the knight in a guarding stance with his verse-bearing shield to show him standing firm in faith with the Christian symbol on the top of the shield Honourable Mention - Stage 5 Jessica Jakubec St Leo s Catholic College, Wahroonga Interesting composition which tries to add depth. Sensitive colour combination and tones used John 3:16 I have chosen this Bible verse as it reflects God s love for us as sinners The first image reflects a sinner bowing down and asking for forgiveness The second image is Arabic script (of John 3:16) The third image is the blood of Jesus Christ pouring into our cup of wine
