Page 4 TAMIL CINEMA 75 A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 1 INTRODUCTION Ever since Kalidas (the first talking picture, colloquially known as talkie ), began to talk and sing, late in 1931, music has been part and parcel of Tamil Cinema which has, over the years, gathered strength, scaling and conquering peaks and more. Today, music (which includes songs, background music score, musical special effects and such) plays a great part in the production of Tamil Cinema. Songs of a movie are big sellers. Described as audio releases, the songs are released with much pomp and circumstance by the producers and audio-distributors well before a film is released, and it is big business. Computer disks, video discs, digital video discs and other formats sell in large numbers not only in this part of the country where Tamil is spoken, but also outside the geographical borders of the nation, crossing seas, oceans, mountains and all. They cater to a growing market in many countries of Asia like Sri Lanka, Singapore and Malaysia, the United Kingdom and United States of America, not excluding Canada where, today, a large number of Tamil speaking people have settled down and look forward to listening to Tamil film songs - not only of the latest releases, but also the songs rendered by great singers of the past 80 years. Incidentally, Tamil Cinema has just completed 80 years, having taken its bow way back in 1931. However, it is a matter of regret that, till today, the Tamilnadu government has not taken any effort to celebrate the great event, nor taken steps to document the history of this vibrant medium. It is all the more surprising and even sad that the two political parties (DMK and AIADMK) which have, by turns, occupied Fort St. George, the seat of power, since 1967 (having made their way and captured political power only by exploiting the medium of cinema), have done nothing till today. Many singers - some of them were also successful actors and stars - lyric writers, music composers, instrument players and many others have contributed to the rich growth of music in Tamil Cinema over the years. There are also off-screen background singers (who are not seen on screen, but their voices are heard). Some of these have become stars in their own right, enjoying a greater degree of popularity than the onscreen stars, actors and actresses. This interesting situation known as playback singing is something unique to Indian Cinema and, today, it is a multibillion rupee industry and still growing. This new series makes a modest attempt to narrate the interesting, fascinating and absorbing history of music and musicians in Tamil Cinema since that fateful day in October 1931, when a Tamil song was heard from a movie screen at first in Madras at a cinema called Kinema Central (renamed later as Murugan Theater ). Life has never been the same again for the local people. This historic site has been recently demolished giving away perhaps to a shopping mall. Sad, perhaps, but so true. It is not commercially viable today to run a single screen theater in this age of multiple screens, shopping malls and such, which have now become the order of the day. Many popular cinema theaters which had earned a place in the hearts, souls and minds of people have vanished for ever. Only the nostalgic memories still live in the minds of folks. **** ***** ***** Somewhat interestingly, the first Tamil talking and singing picture Kalidas was not exactly a hundred percent Tamil film. It spoke not only Tamil but also sang and spoke Telugu and, more surprisingly, even Hindi! Strictly speaking, it could be described as the first multilingual motion picture of India! Indeed it was advertised in the press as a Tamil-Telugu Talking Picture. How did this happen? Thereby hangs a tale worth narrating... (To be continued) OBITUARY N. SRINIVASAN N. Srinivasan (resident of 31/36, Chakrapani Street, West Mambalam. Ph: 2480 4014) passed away on March 31. He was 81, and had been a resident of Mambalam for more than 50 years. April 3-9, 2016 NO HOLDS BARRED By M. A. SADANAND Killing fields Vivekananda Flyover in Kolkata that was crawling into a semblance of a mighty public gift by the government got sick and tired of the mighty thinkers of the city and, in a huff, came down in a squiggle killing 21 and injuring many more. This flyover was not a finished marvel and perhaps needed more months or years to qualify as one that would serve many purposes imagined by the State government but, because of the fate of the innocents near it, went awry. This misadventure of the government adds to the Mamata government s woes which the blood of the innocents would remind as a requiem. Mamata, already shaken by several pushes and pulls, would require to wear steel-plated uniforms for protection from ad hoc revellers who are out for the rulers blood. This sad episode should be looked at on a national scale and the causative factor must be found so that this may not be cited as a manacle to progressive action by governments where the public need for implementation of peoplecentric dynamism is in peril. Though a State subject, the upkeep of roads and internal bridges should be under the supervision of technically qualified officers of the Central government or any similar body qualified on that subject, whose approval of any such scheme is the final word in the feasibility of such mega projects. This super body of experts should be like a super ombudsman whose opinion should be final in such schemes. In short, this touch-me-not personage must be for the nonce while holding the file, like M.K. Gandhi or M.A. Sadanand, beyond external provocations of money, politics and what is contemptuously called pelf. Build bridges of understanding, before you build flyovers. There are many millions of good people who can stop the rot in public usage of public money. Flyovers will not collapse if honest men build them. Find them. Ten-feet long concrete posts have been lying on the road margin at the junction of Dr. Sadasivam Road and Sara-ngapani Street (T. Nagar) for several months. They are causing hindrance to pedestrians and motorists. Concrete posts block road margin Sai bhajans on Saturdays Sai bhajans are conducted at 6.15 p.m on Saturdays in Sri Sathya Sai Organization, Ashok Nagar Samithi (143, 101 st Street, 15 th Sector, K. K. Nagar). More details can be had from T. S. Mani (Convenor) in phones 2489 7017 and 98843 92244. In Bharathidasan Colony Bharathidasan Colony Bhajan Mandali (18-D, Bharathidasan Colony, K. K. Nagar) conducts Sri Sathya Sai bhajans from 6.30 p.m to 7.30 p.m on Saturdays in its premises. More details can be had in phone 94448 25183. Grow more trees Blood donation camp in Vani Mahal today Sri Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha, in association with Mahalakshmi Badminton Club (Chennai), has organized a blood donation program from 9 a.m to 1 p.m on Sunday, April 3 in Vani Mahal (193, G. N. Chetty Road, T. Nagar). Voluntary Health Services Blood Bank will collect the blood from donors. Healthy individuals in the age group of 18 to 60 years can donate blood. The organizers have appealed to the readers of Mambalam Times to support the program. Santhana Gopala Stothram, Bakthi Gaanam on April 14 Palakkad G. Ramanathan will present Sri Santhana Gopala Stothram and Bakthi Gaanam at 8.30 a.m on April 14 in Sree Ayyappa Bhaktha Sabha (18, Sir Madhavan Road, Nungambakkam). Park railings used for hanging office bags These are not school bags hung on the railings of the park compound wall but office bags belonging to field executives taking an afternoon break under the shade of the trees in Corporation Playground on Somasundaram Street, T. Nagar, behind Mahatama Gandhi Vidyalaya is being used for dumping construction debris. The miscreants bring a truck at night and dump the debris at the spot. The local residents have complained several times to Corporation officials but no action is being taken. I appeal to the authorities to clear the debris and erect a warning signboard at the spot to prevent such activities in the future. S. Raghunath, Govindan Road, T. Nagar Pavements encroached upon by vendors Sir, What is the use of widening or laying new pavements when they are of no use to pedestrians? It is a common sight since decades to see pavements occupied by roadside vendors, eateries and commercial establishments. If not, pavements are used for parking vehicles. Except for knee jerk action once in a while, the Corporation has failed to find a permanent solution to the problem. Pedestrians can be seen walking on busy roads risking their lives with encroached pavements alongside. B. Kannan, T. Nagar Residents Welfare Association, 30, Rangan Street, T. Nagar. Year-old bus shelter awaits inauguration Sir, The modern bus shelter erected a year ago on Govindan Road (next to petrol outlet), West Mambalam is not being used. Buses stop instead at Mettupalayam bus shelter on Govindan Street which is in front of a row of shops including a TASMAC shop. The shelter is usually frequented by drunkards because of which women commuters usually stay away for safety reasons. The new shelter, which has a roof and seats, is free of crowd or other encroachments, and offers better convenience and safety for commuters. I appeal to MTC to put the new bus shelter to immediate use for the benefit of commuters. Sivagami Narayanan, Govindan Road, West Mambalam. The Ashok Nagar - K. K. Page 7 Pune school s innovative way to save water City Pride School (Pimpri, Maharashtra) has innovated a simple yet effective way to conserve water. Two years back, the school reeled under water shortage. It innovated its way out of the crisis by collecting the leftover water from the students as they left the school at the end of the classes. It managed to collect 200/300 liters of water every day and used it for watering the plants in the school. The initiative has since been adopted in many other schools in the State. It is estimated that several lakhs of liters of water is saved each year by this method. Will the schools in Ashok Nagar/K.K. Nagar follow suit? Cable drum on road poses danger An EB cable drum is found lying close to the middle of Somasundaram Street, T. Nagar. According to a nearby resident, the cable drum, which was lying on the road margin, rolled over and came to rest in the middle of the road after toppling over a week back. He said that the drum, being very heavy, could not be moved back to the road margin by residents. We have already informed EB officials but the drum is yet to be removed from the spot, he added.
