The Shepherd s Staff Newsletter of the Diocese of the Western States November 2018 The Right Reverend Donald M. Ashman bishopashman@gmail.com News from Around the Diocese Happy News from Saint Mark s, Victoria On September 30 th, the Right Reverend Peter F. Hansen instituted the Reverend W. Scott Herb as the new rector of Saint Mark s. Until his call, Father Herb was serving as the curate of Saint Mark s, Portland and Saint Mark s Victoria was cared for by Canon Stanley Sinclair and Deacon Jonathan Carrothers. Father Herb is busy establishing residency in Victoria and moving into his lodgings. A bright and happy day in Victoria! Father Herb and Deacon Carrothers pose together. The Deacon just celebrated his sixth anniversary of ordination to the Deaconate

Saint Thomas, San Francisco Canon Richard McNeely has communicated that on October 7 th, Saint Thomas held its Annual Barbeque and Picnic. Father wrote: Each year the St Thomas people gather to celebrate the best season of the year in San Francisco: Autumn. The fog stays off shore, the tourists are home and San Francisco enjoys its best weather of the year. Mild days and nights with some subtle autumn colors bless our lives. Our two congregations (8 o clock and 10 o clock) come together in one of two social occasions of the year. With the generous donation of a barbeque grill and the culinary talent of Ted Judson, we served traditional barbeque fare augmented by the pot luck dishes contributed by the congregation. We enjoyed great food, wonderful company and Christian Fellowship. This year our gathering coincided with Fleet Week so later in the afternoon the Navy s Blue Angels demonstrated their prowess to the delight of most. On October 13 and 14, Saint Thomas participated in the Open Studios event which, according to the Canon, involves artists from all over the City exhibiting their work on designated weekends in the Fall. At Saint Thomas God has sent us 8 very talented artists. Surprising for such a small congregation. They are; Barnaby Conrad III, Suzanne Frings, Eileen Hultin, Rita La Force, Michael Madline and Belinda McNeely (Jillian Prewitt and Wendy Tyndall were not exhibitors in the show this year but were here to support their fellow artists). For the first time, St Thomas participated in Open Studios with 6 of our artists exhibiting 29 stunning pieces of art for the public to see. We opened the church on two days for 7 hours per day. We received 70 guests, who had very nice compliments for our artists. They were able to meet four of the artists who were here during the show. Several of the works were sold and some of the proceeds generously donated to the church. A few guests complimented us for opening the church to the neighborhood, so they could see behind the closed doors (sadly a necessity in this fallen world). It felt good to be able to welcome the neighbors and to take another step toward fulfilling our role as that Little Neighborhood Church on Sacramento Street.

Lenten Mite Boxes Provincial ACW has organized the Lenten Mite Box fundraiser for many years, with much success. This year the proceeds will go to student support at St. Joseph of Arimathea Seminary. So far, in 2018, almost $2500 has been raised, and there may be more churches out there which have collected money, but not yet sent it in. If your church has money, but has not yet written the check, please send your checks to Gillian Golden, P.O. Box 558, Selma OR 97538. Make the checks out to Provincial ACW, with a notation Lenten Boxes. We would like to have the final check for St. Joseph of Arimathea Seminary by Advent Sunday, December 2. If your church has not participated in the Lenten Mite Box fundraiser in the past, please consider joining in next year. This must be one of the easiest ways to donate: you receive the box on Ash Wednesday and return it to your church full(?!) on Easter Sunday. Many people put their spare change in the box at the end of each day, or perhaps donate the money they would have spent on the chocolate they have given up for Lent! It doesn t matter how small or large your church or your donation is if every parishioner took part, we could make a big difference for clergy, or potential clergy who may need a little financial assistance. Remember, the person helped may be from your church! All participating parishes will be remembered at the altar at St. Joseph of Arimathea Chapel. Thank you so much to all those parishes who have already sent their contributions. Together, we can make a difference! The Church of Our Saviour and the Holy Apostles In 1923, the newly-built Amanda Chapel was dedicated in memory of Amanda Anderson McCarthy, the mother of J. Harvey McCarthy, who developed the nearby Carthay Circle residential area. The chapel was meant to be nondenominational much like the chapels at West Point or Annapolis; and the name Amanda Chapel (uncovered in 2008) can still be seen above the main doors of the church. The American politician and three times presidential candidate, William Our Saviour as it looked in the 1930s before Jackson Hall was added in the early 1940s. which had once hung in Mission Delores in San Francisco. Jennings Bryan, spoke at the dedication and later Governor Goodwin Knight gave the church bell In 1928, the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles, the Right Reverend Joseph H. Johnson, purchased the Amanda Chapel which was renamed the Church of Our Saviour. In 1936, after a series of faithful vicars, the Church of Our Saviour called its first rector, the Reverend John Christfield Donnell. The Reverend Mr. Donnell was a dynamic personality and led the church for twenty-one years.

In 1957, after the Reverend Donnell s retirement, the church called a Canadian priest Father Rollo Boas as its rector. Father Boas led Our Saviour for ten years and, after he retired, the church called Reverend Forest Ogden Miller who led Church of Our Saviour out of the Episcopal Church during the turbulent period that followed the Minneapolis General Convention of 1976. A year later, Father Miller was called to a church in Texas and the Church of our Saviour was held together by four stalwart vestrymen: Mrs. Appline Cooper, Mr. William Jackson, Mr. Jan Libourel and Mrs. Betty Jones. These were John Christfield Donnell hard years in the wilderness, when the Church of Our Saviour barely hung on, supported by the loyalty of its parishioners and the help of a Welsh priest, Father Enoch Jones. In 1923, the Chapel of the Holy Apostles was founded as a storefront on Eagle Rock Boulevard in Glassell Park. One of its early stalwart vicars was Father Charles Bailey who also had served as vicar of the Church of Our Saviour. Soon, the church built a permanent sanctuary on South Verdugo Road and in 1951-1952, under the firm and soft-spoken leadership of Father Henry Softly, the Church of the Holy Apostles built a larger church building at 1003 South Verdugo Road just over the Glendale city limits. Father Softly retired in 1959 and the parish called Father Robert Spicer-Smith as its dynamic and charismatic second rector. Father Spicer Smith resigned in Bishop Robert Gooden and Father Softly at the Holy Apostles groundbreaking, 1951 1966 and the parish called Father George H. Clendenin who led the parish in a more Anglo- Catholic direction. In 1977, Father Clendenin led the Church of the Holy Apostles out of the Episcopal Church, and like the Church of Our Saviour, Holy Apostles was sued for its property by the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles. Both churches struggled through four difficult years of litigation. And it wasn t only the clergy who sacrificed. The laity as well gave of their time, treasure and talent. When it was over in late 1980, the Church of the Holy Apostles lost its property and the Church of Our Saviour won its property. By this time, through the leadership of Right Reverend Robert Sherwood Morse, the Diocese of Christ the King had been founded. It was Bishop Morse who suggested that the two churches merge, and the merger was completed by 1984, when a new corporate entity emerged: The Church of Our Saviour and the Holy Apostles.

In 1984, Father Clendenin accepted a call to Saint Peters, Oakland and the merged parish called as its second rector, the Reverend Donald M. Ashman, who had joined the Episcopal Church as a member of Holy Apostles in 1974. Made a Deacon in 1980, ordained a priest in 1983, consecrated Suffragan Bishop in 2012 and Diocesan in 2016, Bishop Ashman still serves as Rector of the Church of Our Saviour and the Holy Apostles. In 1987, he helped found Church of Our Saviour, Santa Barbara. Over the last thirty-four years, this three-ring parish with its foci in Los Angeles, Glendale and Santa Barbara has been blessed with devout and dedicated assisting clergy. During the later 1970s, Father Laurence Mann provided invaluable pastoral care in Glendale (as did Father Jones in Los Angeles). During the eighties, nineties and the first years of the twentyfirst century, Fathers Anthony F. Rasch (now Bishop Rasch), Dario Polintan, William Fox and Eldon Bayard along with Deacon Larry Anderson served this parish faithfully. Fathers Mann, Jones, Fox and Bayard are gone to God but their service will never be forgotten. In the last decade, our curate Father Robert H. Greene joined the parish; and our vicar, Father Boyd R. Britton, having joined the parish in 1995, studied for orders and now assists both here and in Santa Barbara. Easter Day 2018 Saint Joseph s Seminary This semester we have offered four classes: Ecclesiastical Latin I and III; The Book of Common Prayer (Bishop Schultz) and The History of the Seven Oecumenical Councils and the Development of Early Church Theology. Next semester (January 2019) both Latin classes and the theology class will continue. In place of the Prayer Book Class, Bishop Upham will be offering a class in Spiritual Formation geared for priests. Next fall (September 2019), he will offer a similar class geared for deacons. All priests are encouraged to take this class especially if they have been a priest less than ten years. Dear clergy and parish leaders. Please send me any Thanksgiving or Christmas pictures with a few words. It means so much for members of our Diocese to see what other parishes are doing. And make sure the Shepherd s Staff reaches your parish family. Gratefully, +dma.
