A disciple is a person who is learning to follow Jesus. Discipleship is initially about moving from unbelief to belief, but spiritual growth is a life-long process. In the book, Move: What 1,000 Churches Reveal About Spiritual Growth, Greg L. Hawkins and Callie Parkinson describe four levels of spiritual maturity: a) exploring, b) growing, c) close to Christ, and d) Christ-centered. This year every United Methodist Church in Iowa is being challenged to consider the process they use for disciple making. Most Christians recognize that there are numerous spiritual disciplines which help move us along the discipleship continuum, Among these disciplines are practices such as Bible study, prayer, worship, small groups, Sabbath rest, giving, serving and witnessing. Every local church has a responsibility to provide opportunities for children, youth and adults to learn and practice these spiritual disciplines, so that we can all continue to grow spiritually. In their book, Stride: Creating a Discipleship Pathway for Your Church, Mike Schreiner and Ken Willard suggest that there are four keys to spiritual growth. These are: -Know where you are -Plan intentionally to take the next step -Meet others where they are -Help them to take the next step Unfortunately, many Christians today are not actively engaged in any of the discipleship activities that promote spiritual growth. Now might be a good time for you to examine your own life to better understand you current level of spiritual growth and what will be your next step. I am currently gathering a team of people from the church to help identify the areas where we are doing well in terms of promoting spiritual growth and the ones where we need to add or improve our offerings. If you are someone with experience or expertise in visioning and planning, or if you are feeling a nudge from God to help the church lead people from the stage of beginning believer to church leader, you need to be on this team. If God is calling you to this mission, please let me know. -Pastor Bev Marshall-Goodell Page 1
